I have a full course of untouched antibitoics prescribed to me for mastitis on 23rd December. Thought I had it and because of Christmas etc, erred on the side of caution and GP prescribed them but said to give it a few days. Turned out to be a cold and a sore boob...

But now I have: flu symptoms, a temperature, sore, engorged type feeling breast which no amount of feeding relieves and the start of red patches on the breast.

Can I take the 3 month old antibiotics? What would you do?

what are they? as long as they were in date you could. Have you had then before? I wouldn't reccomend it TBH, the doctor would be pretty peeved, and you would need to tell him really. Ask for an emergency app?

FastasleepQueenLentilWeaver · 28/03/2006 19:54

People go to A&E with mastitis all the time, honestly. They don't even get annoyed by it!

cupcakes · 28/03/2006 19:55

I wouldn't take them either I'm afraid. Phone medicom/ out of hours and see what they suggest. (I doubt they'll tell you to take them but they may have other suggestions or could advise whether you need to see a doctor quicker).

Racers · 28/03/2006 19:55

I would ask for an emergency appointment or a call back from them to check whether these can be used. I certainly wouldn't wait until Thursday! Good luck

popsycalindisguise · 28/03/2006 19:56

flucloxacilin 250mg capsules
Might ring to speak to my doc in the morning and see what he says.
I dont want to leave it too long. Am at work tomorrow too.

Personally I would take the ABs but then I'm kinda free and easy with prescription drugs

or you could demand an emergency or out of hours appt

pupuce · 28/03/2006 19:57

Take Nurofen first... it clears 80% of mastitis

popsycalindisguise · 28/03/2006 19:59

can I take nurofen when breastfeeding? usually stick to paracetomol......

OP posts:
pupuce · 28/03/2006 19:59

Yes you can it works for mastitis as it is an anti-inflammatory.

chipkid · 28/03/2006 19:59

I would take the drugs now before the mastitis gets any worse-I have suffered with this on so many occasions I wouldn't even hesitate

pupuce · 28/03/2006 20:00

Mastitis is an inflammation of a blocked duct.

NotQuiteCockney · 28/03/2006 20:01

I would take nurofen, and also make sure to feed with baby's chin pointing to lumpy bit, as that helps clear it.

If stuck, I would probably take the ABs, but they're best avoided, really.

pupuce · 28/03/2006 20:01

The issue with AB is that it increases your risk of thrush, it pases through your milk and can affect your baby and your gut flora. Try Nurofen first... if you can bear feeling awful for a few more hours.

NotQuiteCockney · 28/03/2006 20:01

Also, express from that boob, and massage the lump while feeding. You know the drill.

Pagan · 28/03/2006 20:03

I would take them but why not ring NHS 24 just for advice. Also there should be a use by date on the ABs you have

popsycalindisguise · 28/03/2006 20:04

Have been expressing today as i feed as I have work tomorrow. Going to express from that side again now I think. Just checked ot a website and I think I have a mild case so nurofen may be sufficient to shift it. Feel 'weller' today than I did yesterday evening. The sore part is at the top of my breast so feeding with ds2's chin pointing to it could e interesting! Saying that, he is a pretty acrobatic feeder!!!

Thanks for your advice:)

ring nhs direct and explain you cant get a docs app. you cant leave mastitis... hope you're okay.

NotQuiteCockney · 28/03/2006 20:10

How old is he? Best position for that is, lying on your back, baby on top of you, bum on your head. Or, if the baby is too small to be competant, baby lying on his back, you crouch over him.

Chin in direction of lump really works, it cleared a near-mastitis attack of mine a few months back.

(A more hardcore suggestion: if you're giving solids, stop. I wasn't brave enough to do this, DS2 was 12 months at the time.)

popsycalindisguise · 28/03/2006 20:11

almost 13 months and about 25lbs....could be very interesting :)

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 28/03/2006 20:12

Yeah, DS2 was about that age. Lie on your back, he'll enjoy it.

Actually, though, that got DS2 to prefer feeding that way, which was a bit annoying. I didn't mind the idea of lying down, offering norks and leaving him to switch sides etc, but sitting on my head was a bit tiresome, particularly when I was trying to read.

Have you tried 'old wives' remedy of savoy cabbage leaves in your bra? I know it sounds too weird to be true, but it worked for me, and medication required.

amber5 · 28/03/2006 20:21

sorry, i mean NO medication required

footiemad · 28/03/2006 21:21

worked for me amber5! sometimes old remedies are the best.Smile

Can I just revive this thread and ask... how long can you not feed on one side before its too late? Am sure I have it on the right, and I know you should carry on feeding... but it was just too painful; even if fabric touched me I screamed. So he's had one proper feed and one little one in the last 24hrs (plus expressed from a bottle.. I haven't starved him!) Am feeling very full. Have taken 2 lots of Nurofen, which helped enough the first time for the mini feed, but this dose has done nothing. I really dont want to stop bfeeding. Am seeing the doc at 5pm, but thought I'd do some research on here first.
