What word to teach a toddler to use for bf?

megandraper · 12/09/2012 12:37

DD is 15 months and looks like we will be bf for some time to come.

For various reasons, I want to introduce a word we use for bf so that as she gets older its not obvious to other people what she is asking for IYSWIM.

thought of 'snuggle' but her older siblings use that for a cuddle so it would be confusing.

Oh, and a Biscuit for the first person to suggest bitty...

Haha, well done for per-emoting bitty. We just said booby. Ie do you want some booby?

lisaro · 12/09/2012 12:41

Pre-empting. Wish my bloody phone didn't do that!

Bunsouttheoven · 12/09/2012 12:41

I always tried to introduce a more discreet word but they never took off. 'twas booby & no other word would doGrin

Could try 'quiet time' ?

nethunsreject · 12/09/2012 12:42

It's nummies in our house. He kind of came up with it himself.

megandraper · 12/09/2012 12:42

Booby makes sense, lisaro but pretty obvious that's what they're asking for. I know I shouldn't care, but I can think of some situations in which I might...

Oh, I like quiet time, bun - though if she's still bf when she starts nursery next year that might cause some confusion when the staff announce quiet time after lunch...

Why not just 'milk'? The source of the milk doesn't need to be obvious if you don't want it to be, and it avoids having to use any twee cringeworthy boob-related words!

lisaro · 12/09/2012 12:48

It funny, but most people I know have used booby, so it's quite universal. I doubt there'd be many situations in which it's awkward to use. Well done on feeding so long.

AnitaBlake · 12/09/2012 12:50

DD asks for 'milk please mummy'! Its always just been milk here.

5madthings · 12/09/2012 12:53

aftet my eldest called them 'titty one' and 'titty two' Blush i made sure that my next children called it something more acceptable! so ds2 and ds3 called it 'milka' i knew what they meant and it didnt raise any eyebrows when they said it!

MigGril · 12/09/2012 12:55

it's mummy milk in this house, after all it's just milk.

Kendodd · 12/09/2012 12:56

Mummy milk?

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 12/09/2012 13:00

Just milk, surely...?

YesThisTime · 12/09/2012 13:12

My 15mo has just started yelling "boodie" at mine! I think it's delightful right now but I know exactly what you mean OP. In a few months I might be more self-conscious about it.

megandraper · 12/09/2012 13:24

YesThis - yes, I can envisage being a year or so down the track, and feeling self-conscious, since so many people have prejudiced opinions about 'older' toddlers/children bf. At the moment, I just let DD feed whenever she wants to, but at some point will be introducing 'nursing manners' and the concept that she can only bf at certain times.

Don't want to use 'milk' as I want to differentiate between a beaker of cow's milk and my milk. Don't want to use 'mummy milk' as again that's obvious.

Milka is an idea, 5mad (and definitely better than titty one and titty two Grin)

DS (19 months) asks for, "ish". Not quite sure why, although he may be trying to say, "this". He also signs for milk.

mawbroon · 12/09/2012 13:29

We called it milk and cows milk to differentiate

Coconutfeet · 12/09/2012 13:33

We just called it "milk" from BF and "milk in a cup" for cow's milk. It wasn't a conscious thing, that's just what ds came up with, I think.

TruthSweet · 12/09/2012 15:34

It's 'Bah' in our house (though the older two do call it breastfeeding too but they don't have bah any more Wink). It's been 'More Bah p'ees', 'Mama Bah', 'This Side Bah', 'Uh Side Bah' as well, depending on who is asking and for what reason. It seems fairly innocuous too and no one has ever guessed until after they have started nursing what Bah is.

megandraper · 12/09/2012 15:59

Bah has the advantage of being within DD's somewhat limited verbal range right now, *Truth. Maybe that's the one.

Perhaps I'll combine with 5Mad's 'Milka'. DD could then ask for 'Milka Bah' and other people would think I feed her Milky Bars (and probably be far less disapproving about that than about bf, sadly!)

OP posts:
TruthSweet · 12/09/2012 16:12

It came from DH calling my breasts the '24 hour all you can eat milk bar' and DD1 renamed them Bahs Grin so Milka Bah is a good name in my book Smile

NinthWave · 12/09/2012 16:16

My 23mo used to call it Booba

BenRoo · 12/09/2012 17:38

Booboo here...
Tried to limit it to just Boo but DS had his own ideas.
Now people just thinks he's talking about boobies in general and laugh ;)

ningthemerciless · 13/09/2012 22:18

It's Bo in this house.

Usually goes like this: "mummy, Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo BO!"

megandraper · 14/09/2012 16:24

Grin ning
