What word to teach a toddler to use for bf?

megandraper · 12/09/2012 12:37

DD is 15 months and looks like we will be bf for some time to come.

For various reasons, I want to introduce a word we use for bf so that as she gets older its not obvious to other people what she is asking for IYSWIM.

thought of 'snuggle' but her older siblings use that for a cuddle so it would be confusing.

Oh, and a Biscuit for the first person to suggest bitty...

'Dubba' in this house, a word DD invented and DS also adopted.

midori1999 · 15/09/2012 11:11

I love these threads.

We got into the habit of saying 'mooky' as mook was what my eldest called milk before he could say it properly and we thought it sounded cute. However, DD is 15 months and in the last few days she's started saying 'boo' when she wants milk. I have called it 'booby' a bit, not much though, but that's obviously what she's picked up on. She knows her own mind this one.... Grin

littlemachine · 15/09/2012 11:17

I call bf 'moomoo' to DS1 (although he's only 9 months and can't talk). He might use that when he's older and I'm in the habit of saying it now.

It makes me sound like a cow doesn't it. Hmm I should have come up with something better!

BertieBotts · 15/09/2012 11:18

I used milk and DS would say "Milk in a cup" or "Milk from the fridge" to indicate cow's milk.

BertieBotts · 15/09/2012 11:19

Or "Milk from you" if I was trying to cover some embarrassment and say "Ah yes a cup of milk, I'm sure Nanny has one!" etc Grin

EdMcDunnough · 15/09/2012 11:25

Mine didn't really have a word for it. He just used to pat them and look at me appealingly. Hmm

As for the actual items, they were known by him as 'this one milky' and 'that one milky'. My son has no imagination.

poachedeggs · 15/09/2012 11:37

Milk here too, with cow milk or milk in a cup for non-mum milk.

To be honest I could get her to call it what I like and it would still be blatantly obvious what she was asking for, what with the patting and tugging and sobbing and wails ("Miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiilk waaaaaaaaaaaaah miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiilk!") at the slightest hint of refusal or deferment from me!

effingwotsits · 15/09/2012 11:55

My ds decided on 'mimit' all by himself Confused no idea why.

megandraper · 16/09/2012 06:28

You are so right poached, it will still be blatantly obvious. DD doesn't have a word for bf yet, but she throws herself at me and clings like a baby koala, desperately bending herself into the bf position. DS1 (age 4) describes it as "making the shape".

lolalotta · 16/09/2012 06:36

It "milky" here and when she was older she used to say it and pat them gently at the same time. I stopped feeding her at 2.1, she's 2.9 now and BF seems like a lifetime ago now!!!! She used to ask for "milk in a cup" when she wanted cows milk! Grin

CountBapula · 16/09/2012 06:37

DS calls it 'booboo'. Now that he's almost 2 and saying little sentences, it's become 'Booboo time, Mummy'. Then once we assume the position he goes 'DAT one' and points at whichever boob he wants Blush

megandraper · 16/09/2012 06:43

DD tends to latch on to one, stop after a minute, shake her head violently and crossly and lunge for the other one. Like she's expecting milk and got apple juice or something. No idea what the difference is.

Don't know why I'm trying to differentiate between bf and cow's milk anyway, really, since she won't take cow's milk at all. Have only just got her to accept a few sips of water - even then, only from one particular sports bottle and only occasionally. Sigh.

Don't be embarrassed bedhopper!

FWIW we call it milk but since I've restricted it to just bedtime she very very rarely asks for it at other times.

lagoonhaze · 16/09/2012 07:16

Rofl - koala bear- good description!

Milky cuddles, mummy cuddles, milkies and booby.

I understand why you are looking for a word. Sometimes it's just exhausting and dealing with the looks isn't helpful! Watching with interest got my 10mth old who is "still doing THAT!"

JiltedJohnsJulie · 16/09/2012 11:42

We used Lolo, think I got it from an article when DS was very young. The author was sayiing don't ever teach your baby its called Booby or Booby milk because you might feed longer than you expected and her 2 year old had just had a melt down in Tesco screaming I want Booby Milk NOW! Grin.

We used Lolo with both and all the old dears thought they were just saying Hello.

AThingInYourLife · 16/09/2012 12:05

"Watching with interest got my 10mth old who is "still doing THAT!" "

Shock

10 months?!

I love this thread :)

I misunderstood the title, thinking of my 2 year old and what she calls it when DD3 (11 weeks) has a feed (she calls it "having a feed" :o )

I stopped bfing my first two around the age your DD is now, so we didn't get to having a word for it.

DD1 used to "ask" by putting her head between my breasts and shaking it between them in the manner of a frat boy in a teen movie. :o

lagoonhaze · 16/09/2012 20:16

Yep sadly what I get on a regular basis from family. Apparently I should be moving her on from all that...... Blah blah blah. Thank god I read up on stuff before I had DD and didn't listen when they did the formula speeches that made me switch DS to formula

Booboostoo · 16/09/2012 21:45

DD repeatedly pokes at my breast and if I delay she lifts my top so no point in trying to be discreet, it's "titty" for us.

nannyl · 16/09/2012 21:49

I call my DD "moomin"

Missy > missy moo > moomin

she therefor drinks "moomin milk!"

1Catherine1 · 16/09/2012 22:23

When DD first started to talk it was "boob" but now it is "booboo", which I much prefer. It makes my dad cringe in shame though - he blames DP. My DD doesn't so much ask as demand though, she has ruined countless tops by grabbing them and pulling shouting "BOOBOO".

lostinindia · 16/09/2012 22:28

DD calls it Mimi. No idea how that started but it stuck. DS started called it Meh! Which amused me no end but has just recently started asking for Mimi too. It's usually accompanied by frantic opening and closing of hands and bouncing up and down.

wrigglerstea · 16/09/2012 23:38

When wriggler was tiny she used to have a particular hungry cry that sounded more "Ning ning" than "wan wah". So we called it ning ning. As in "I think she wants a ning, you'd better take her" as she started to to talk she said it herself. But adapted it, so now she says "nang na". As i[tantrums on floor] "Mummy I think I need some nang na to calm me down" [resumes screaming].

Interestingly on a thread like this recently someone said that they were encouraging their child to call it nyongya (?spelling) which they said was the Swahili for breast feeding. So maybe she is just correcting our pronunciation!

littlebluechair · 16/09/2012 23:51

We just went with 'milk', then anyone overheating projects their preference onto it and everyone is happy!

ItsNotUnusualToBe · 16/09/2012 23:56

The last one called it milky- pops which actually came out sounding like Bee-Dots. My boobs are SO not like any type of dots! Who knows what this one will come out with!

Napdamnyou · 17/09/2012 01:51

DS (21 months) calls it 'mah',which people think is mama. Then scrambles onto me and shoves his hand down my top, which rather gives the game away.

We have a 'no mah apart from on the sofa' rule to stop him asking when out and about but that has bitten me on the arse as every time I sit down....
