story here

may have been linked elsewhere.

but anyway - am rolling my eyes so hard they may never return to face the front at some of these lines.

"?If breast-feeding becomes the only way the child can feel safe and comfortable, it could become dependent on it,? says Dr Helen Barrett, developmental psychologist and author of Attachment And The Perils Of Parenting.
?And for children with particular needs that already make them a target for bullies, continuing to breast-feed could make that situation even worse."

and

"In the extreme nursing debate perhaps Becky?s experience is the most persuasive argument of all for weaning children as babies ? before they realise they are being breast-fed at all."

Would love to read the research she is basing that on. Both of mine were fed until they were 2.8. Just had the school reports and both teachers say what happy, confident, intelligent and well liked children they are. Feel like photocopying it and sending the daft bitch a copy.

SaraBellumHertz · 12/07/2012 14:41

That first picture is lovely Smile

What I really don't understand (apart from why you'd call a boy "beanie") is why these families allow themselves to be portrayed so poorly in the DM. ..

TitsalinaBumSquash · 12/07/2012 14:52

I had to chuckle at the "lady dog" comment and ..."Egos being preened on mumsnet" Maybe that lady was a victim of AIBU gone savage? Grin

Another wanky article from The Fail Hmm

TheMysteryCat · 12/07/2012 15:17

"extreme nursing"... a dangerous sport indeed!

does it involve middle class mums bungee jumping with babes in arms?

Grin
hazchem · 12/07/2012 16:28

Most people I know do some form of extreme sport be it kickboxing, snowboarding, skateboarding and I've always felt left out but know I'm in with the "in" crowd cause i'm into extreme breastfeeding :)

KatAndKit · 12/07/2012 17:22

extreme breastfeeding? In many parts of the world it would not be considered extreme at all, merely normal and natural. Really crap article which made it sound like feeding a small child is some sort of fashion statement. The menz just need to get over their ishoos really.

ChunkyPickle · 12/07/2012 17:41

I don't understand the logic of one of the poor DH who says he wants equal time with his toddler, and that BF interferes with that.. there's a fair few other meals in the day aren't there?

Like hazchem, I'm just glad that I've finally found an extreme-something that I can actually do!

It seems my laziness has paid off though - I only feed DS lying down in bed - so it rarely occurs to him that he could molest me for a feed when we're out of the house!

Kveta · 12/07/2012 18:09

I particularly hate the 'could' crap from the expert. no 'it will do X', just 'well it might in circumstances I'm unwilling to describe because that would be too much like actual research'

If breast-feeding becomes the only way the child can feel safe and comfortable, it could become dependent on it,? says Dr Helen Barrett, developmental psychologist and author of Attachment And The Perils Of Parenting.
?And for children with particular needs that already make them a target for bullies, continuing to breast-feed could make that situation even worse."

I am almost tempted to start tandem nursing DS and (newborn) DD in public to claim my 'extreme breast feeder' badge. except that I spent several months convincing DS only to nurse once or twice a day, when mummy was in bed, and nowhere else. don't want to sabotage that arrangement :o

DH sent me the link to this story this morning. I have a horrible feeling he was making a point Angry. All I can say is it is going to have the opposite effect to the one he wants Grin

I bloody hate the daily fail and their anti breastfeeding agenda. Such narrow minded twats.

I also despise the use of the word "extreme".

NoComet · 12/07/2012 18:22

Given the age DD2 continued to BF to.
I think she had developed a whole host of ways of feeling safe and comfortable.
Yes BF was one of them, but she also used hugging teddy, getting Daddy to read to her, wrapping teachers round her little finger, being the best reader in her class and making friends in a way I never will be able too.

As to being teased, sadly she instinctively knew not to ask to BF in public and she didn't want to upset her 5 year freind who had been made to stop. DD2 understood that BF was conditional on sleeping in your own bed, DF refused to get the message.

olimpia · 12/07/2012 20:11

Maisie, Beanie and Beau...Really? Grin

Kveta · 12/07/2012 20:24

:o it's more extreme naming than extreme breast feeding!

OP posts:
olimpia · 12/07/2012 20:36

kveta if I were James Vincent I would be much more worried about my children being bullied at school than not having full access to my wife's boobs for a little while!
What a daft article!

HiggsBoson · 12/07/2012 20:40
Sad

Have you seen the comments underneath the article?

breastfeeding toddlers is revolting

DD is 2.5. Really? People think we're revolting?

Hmm
TheMysteryCat · 12/07/2012 20:46

yup, they/we are revolting against poor diets, rising obesity and weakened immune systems...

katkouta · 12/07/2012 20:52

I know Higgs I always read the bloody comments and regret it immediately! I too am revolting :) Fuck em.

Kveta · 12/07/2012 20:55

remember that the idiots people who write those comments tend to be a few sandwiches short of a picnic, bless them.

bronze · 12/07/2012 21:01

I would love any of the judgy people to tell
Me which of my children I extremely breastfed Grin

tickleme63 · 12/07/2012 21:06

Hooray for all you revolting ladies! Grin I hope to join your ranks. I'm up to a year so far - wonder what that equates to in 'extreme' terms...

Whoa, that's an AWESOME picture! Saving it. Thanks Seventh :)

TheMysteryCat · 12/07/2012 21:11

great pic seventheverything

tickleme I think you can get your junior ranks! tee hee!

I never thought I'd bf for more than 6 months, but just kept going because it was so convenient and so good for my little boy.

i really don't understand why this has become such a silly political stick to beat women with.

KatAndKit · 12/07/2012 21:28

Now, I am in the early months and even now, my DP still has "access" to my boobs if he wants if we are not too knackered despite the fact that I am lactating and feeding 10 times a day. So even if I did continue past the first year (dunno if I will or not but have no objection to it) surely he would have more "access" then anyway? Why do people think milk producing boobs are out of bounds? Why is it not some sexy fertility symbol? Men are supposed to be innately attracted to the things that make us fertile.

EauRouge · 12/07/2012 21:30

You know that infinite monkey theorem that says monkeys randomly hitting a typewriter will eventually come up with the complete works of Shakespeare? I always picture that when I read the comments on Mail articles. They hammer their little comments into the keyboard and then go back to throwing poo at each other.

hazchem · 12/07/2012 21:41

EauRouge That made me laugh out loud. I totally love the image.
