Avent bottles and other brand teats and leaving dd for hospital treatment

Hello!

Am trying really hard to get my 13 week old dd to take a bottle of ebm...problem is i'm going out on tuesday for the afternoon (guilt, guilt, guilt) and leaving her with my dm who will tell me in great detail how dd screamed when trying to give bottle...which she will...

also, am going to have to go into hospital for gall stone removal - ouch - anyone else had that? (panic and huge huge stress at leaving dd with others to look after - can't quite see how will cope with that, but that's a different one!) so dd simply HAS to have bottles of ebm whilst i'm in there (planning to continue bf on release).

anyway, question is - dd won't take avent teats at the moment - are there any that anyone else would recommend and can they be used with avent bottles? and has anyone else been forced into leaving baby at hands of others for medical reasons?

Thanks....

After posting on here we tried MAM ultivent teats and bottles, which DD took to pretty well (huge sigh of relief at the time!). Not sure if the teats fit Avent bottles. They are quite easily available in boots though.

Afraid no experience of gall stones, hope you can get some reassurance from others. Best of luck with the op - hope recovery is swift and DD ok with DM.

I used Nuk teats and bottles when DD started to refuse her Avent teat. They are much softer. Someone on here said they fit Avent bottles but I haven't tried them as only had 4oz bottles, so needed the bigger Nuk ones anyway (if that makes sense?!)

chipmonkey · 26/02/2006 12:00

MAM ultivent DO fit Avent bottles! And we had some success with these teats, as did popsycal, matnanplus and other "owners" of bottle-refusers! Unfortunately my ds3 refused these as well as soon as he went on solids. But he eventually took Playtex NaturalLatch teats. Unfortunately these only fit the Playtex nursers which require disposable liners which you have to keep buying and which generally go against my principles. ( I use washable nappies so am not impressed with disposable bottles) IME if they are hungry enought they will take the bottle eventually though the screaming in the meantime can be hard to bear!

I used MAM ultivent and they worked well

I was in hospital overnight and apparently he was fine
Can't spell this morning but the doc who gave me the anaesthetic said it would have been fine to have baby brought in to the hospital for his feeds
Not sure if this would be an option for you

Hattiecat · 26/02/2006 13:48

thanks for that blondielondon - i was wondering whether they would let me do that - wonder about overnight though....thye should be flexible though really shouldn't they>? was there a time after the anasthetic when you weren't able to feed? was wondering whether it would have an effect on dd...

We used Tommee Tippee Nuby teats that worked with Avent bottles. Those were the only ones DS would take. I found Avent bottles to be shite tbh. They kept leaking.

As for your hospital stay, no experience I'm afraid. Hope it all goes well though

I had my gall bladder removed last August when my ds was 7mths old. I went in at 8am, had the op at 12, and I was home again by 8pm. My ds was being bf at that time and wouldn't take a bottle. I only had to miss 2 feeds and my dh just cup fed ds for them. Didn't take much, but then he was on solids by that time too.

HTH - do CAT me if you want more info

Blondeinlondon · 26/02/2006 16:25

My DS was 8 mths and the doc said I didn't have to worry about skipping feeds
As it was I felt pretty rough and out of it so it was 24 hours without feeding overall. 5 hours before the op and the rest afterwards

Hattiecat · 26/02/2006 16:37

thanks so much for that - its scary enough with the pain and dodgey liver function results, going yellow etc without having to think about leaving the poor little mite! have just had another 45 minute screaming session as tried to get her to have bottle, and am going out tomorrow to buy every brand of teat known to man!!!

Hattiecat -just a thought -are you trying to give her the bottle? If so you might be better getting DP, Mum or someone else to do it as it may be that she can smell your milk and wants the breast as usual. If someone else is holding her they might have more luck?

Hattiecat · 26/02/2006 17:53

yew, indeed it was me trying to do it - dh gives up after approx 2 minutes and declares that she isn't hungry - huh......

You could try a haberman feeder, it is closest to the breast in that unlike typical botles the milk comes out as you tip the bottle with the haberman feeder it is held in a reservoir and only comes out when baby sucks. They are available on ebay at reduced cost.haberman feeder

AS suggested baby will often refuse when mum tries to feed but others have better luck.

Have you tried slipping the bottle in while little one still drowsy?

chipmonkey · 26/02/2006 22:02

Yes, the haberman was my last resort if Playtex didn't work but luckily it did! btw cheapest playtex here

red37 · 26/02/2006 22:08

The boots wide neck teats fit the avent bottles, my ds2 wouldnt take to avent teats at first so I tried him on the teats from boots.
Hope this helps.

jellyjelly · 27/02/2006 08:22

What about the bottles that are a half size and loo like a boob? I saw them in a magazine but dont know the name.

Hattiecat · 27/02/2006 09:10

Not sure if they are available in UK but I have tried every single bottle brand for my DS and the only ones he will take are Pigeon they have a peristaltic teat which actually stretches like a real nipple (in theory) and he loves these.

chipmonkey · 27/02/2006 14:06

jellyjelly, do you mean the \link{http//:www.adiri.com\breastbottle?} I tried it and ds3 was not one bit convinced! Also found it leaky. However, I know one MNer found it good. Still have it it you want it, Hattie.

chipmonkey · 27/02/2006 14:07

sorry, the \link{http://www.adiri.com\breastbottle}

Hattiecat · 27/02/2006 15:48

chipmonkey · 27/02/2006 17:07

Hattie, you can have it free. Its just taking up space in my cupboard.

chipmonkey · 27/02/2006 17:09

Hattie, can you be CAT'ed?

Hattiecat · 27/02/2006 19:26

I can indeed - just enduring the screaming as she is currently saying a loud "NO" to a bottle!!! Angry

Another vote for Tommy Tippee Nuby from me. Dd preferred them to me! Good luck and fingers crossed!
