Getting anything done while Bf?!

Softlysoftly · 20/06/2012 14:04

Dd2 is 3 wks and feeds constantly, when not feeding she has to be held or screams if put near a mattress.

If she was first baby then fine but I have work to do, a house to clean and a toddler who although being good is lacking attention, I can't even get time to make her food!

So how do you do it? How to feed/hold and get things done before I give up and move to formulae.

maybe get a sling? so inbetween feeds you can run around like a headless chicken until the next one calmly get everything done with baby attatched?!

isthistheendthistime · 20/06/2012 14:16

Yes, a Boba Wrap is good for the first few months. Or a soft structured carrier like an Ergo/Manduca, but you need a separate infant insert for a young baby in the Ergo.

Softlysoftly · 20/06/2012 14:16

That's an idea any recommendations?

I'm having the same problems here, my mum pops in so I can shower and het some lunch. I'm hoping the answer to my prayers is a sling, I'm waiting on number 3 arriving later. The first 2 were beyond my iq and I couldn't get them on.
Things will get better. Don't know how I'd cope with s toddler on top, Eeh I feel for you.

Softlysoftly · 20/06/2012 14:17

X post thankyou! Am hitting google unless there is a shop you can try them?

www.Victoriaslinglady.co.uk

seems v reasonable prices too.

i was recommended a stretch wrap for my newborn from the above site and he loves it!
falls asleep as soon as i walk around. can feed and change his big brother without him screaming. don't know what I'd do without it. he's 2 months old now and still going well. i take him to DS1's toddler stuff in it too.

SwivelHips · 20/06/2012 14:24

After the mare I've had I'd recommend a sling meet, sorry on phone and can't link
I wish I could have went to one

jaggythistle · 20/06/2012 14:33

www.Victoriaslinglady.co.uk sorry did link wrong above.

has videos on how to use, was easier than i thought.

SwivelHips · 20/06/2012 14:55

Hmm also noted in case I can't get on sling number 3. Mind I could use my new nursing bra, could fit a few in there :)

speeder1 · 20/06/2012 15:00

mmm I had the same problem. it stops by 12 weeks and they are way more happy to sit alone. I miss that now :)

Babybjorn carrier was my saviour. Meant I cook/move around/help toddler. I don't like other more "hippy" carriers are they are a faff. IMHO a carrier has to be able to be done up and undone asap or it's annoying..

PoppyWearer · 20/06/2012 15:04

I'm sat here with a teething 10mo, bf'ing (comforting) incessantly, won't take dummy today, crying every time I put him down, too big for Baby Bjorn now, won't nap....DC1 in Pre-school and I still can't get anything done! I have parties to plan and ironing to do! Aargh!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 20/06/2012 15:07

Sorry to derail,

BabyBjorn carriers aren't that good for a developing baby, especially if used a lot. They are supported only by their crotch, and their legs dangle from their hips.

There are lots of easy to use "hippy" slings out there, full buckle SSC (soft structured carrier) are at least as easy to use as a BabyBjorn.

The best thing to do is get yourself to a slingmeet if you can, and if you can't head over to the Natural Mamas forum. There's lots of really, really sound advice and a really good second-hand slings section.

You can do hands free breastfeeding in a sling if you practice btw

loopydoo · 20/06/2012 15:08

If she's only three weeks old, don't give yourself a hard time. Your body needs to recover from pregnancy and birth so you can sit and relax and play with your dc1 in between feeds.

Forget the housework and try and give you and dd2 time for feeding and bonding and get your partner to help in the evenings etc.

A sling is a great way to have dd near you whilst doing everything you need to do.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 20/06/2012 15:09

poppywearer DD is 2 and I still carry her :) not in a BabyBjorn though. There are other far better carriers out there which will allow you to comfortably carry older infants/toddlers/children.

jaggythistle · 20/06/2012 15:11

poppy I'm already planning possible carriers for when he's bigger... maybe soft structured Ergo type next...

i just tie on the wrap before i need it as it's quite lightweight. then can just pop DS2 in and out as required. can tie it pretty quick now anyway after a wee bit practice. :)

jaggythistle · 20/06/2012 15:14

also just bf while sitting doing stickers, jigsaws, watching hours of tv/dvds, DS1 in high chair eating etc.

i run and make him lunch up early if both happy before lunch time so I'm ready to chuck it at him if DS2 hungry!

jaggy - I used my stretchy wrap from Victoria the Sling Lady at a SlingMeet last week end. I am 6m pg and DD3 is 2y 8m - it's still comfy for both of us though DD3 wasn't too keen on being 'posted' into it she soon settled and looked like she was going to sleep!

I don't do back carries and stretchies aren't suitable for BC due to the risk of falling so either do a front carry or use a ring sling and do a hip carry. The only thing is you have to make sure the sling is on pretty tight before 'posting' as if it's loose then with the stretch fabric the baby/toddler can fall if you move about.

Life saver are slings though! Nothing like hanging the washing out and bfing at the same time Wink

speeder1 · 20/06/2012 15:44

(slightly alarmed)

it'sallgoingtobe fine - Babybjorns aren't good for hips? really? is that official advice? hope not - both my DDs have been in theirs a lot. they both hated the other types of slings - and I was always slightly alarmed they could suffocate in them too... their is good support further up and the tops of their hips are supported too..

I think slings must be a personal preference thing at the end of the day.

Interested that there are slings for 2 year olds - are they the ones which you use on your back?

jaggythistle · 20/06/2012 15:58

really truth? wow i thought i might get to somewhere between 6 months and a year depending on how big he gets, from what I'd been told. loving it so far. i did see it demonstrated using a 3 year old actually when i got (invaluable) advice from a local sling fan. :)

just folding some washing and getting baby DS2 cuddles at the same time, what's not to like? Grin

jaggythistle · 20/06/2012 16:01

congrats on your pg by the way, I'd missed that reading your posts on here!

agree about tying it tighter than you think cos it's stretchy, i got a good rl demo and watched videos to get it right.

TruthSweet · 20/06/2012 16:06

Speeder - this has info on why baby carriers that carry the baby from the crotch not spreading the weight out across the thighs aren't good for hip development.

Most people carry on their backs, some do hip carries (like you would do when you pick up a toddler) some weirdos like me still do front carries for older toddlers. I can carry my 4y (who's the size of a 6y - 111cm/18kg) in a ring sling in a hip carry if needed.

ecochildsplay.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Screen-shot-2012-01-31-at-9.41.57-AM.png

This kind of illustrates the dangling from crotch thing. I am not saying that BabyBjorn carriers will cause any medical issues, but surely common sense dictates it is more comfortable for baby to be sitting in a carrier rather than hanging.

TruthSweet · 20/06/2012 16:10

jaggy - I have just uploaded a pic of DD3 in the sling - you can see how it still fits her and how her legs are still 'froggy' style rather than hanging down so she is effectively cuddling me in the sling.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 20/06/2012 16:12

speeder I use a Kanga XTP for DD at the mo, that replaced my Huckepack toddler.

There is a whole world of carrying out there... :)
