Newborn feeding ALL the time!

StarlightWithAsteroid · 16/06/2012 19:22

Cosleeping so getting a BIT of sleep but even have to feed on the loo coz I can't handle the fury if I put him down for a second.

Nipples sore but I have giant nipples and baby has teeny mouth. Latch is as good as it can be. Fury at being off the breast for one second means wide open mouth to start.

Born yesterday morning he has had 7 completely full nappies (don't tend to change poo nappies until they are full to capacity anyway) and colour of poo now browny-yellow.

Despite being overdue and fed up, I'm starting to think it was better when he was inside!

shushpenfold · 16/06/2012 19:24

Aww - he sounds like a super hungry newborn who must be guzzling like mad if the poo is going yellowy already! No advice, just try to rest when you can and ignore the pain!

YouBrokeMySmoulder · 16/06/2012 19:24

It will calm down a lot just take it one day at a time. I would change his nappy whenever he poos even slightly as well or he will be screaming from nappy rash too and that's not what you want.

Is he actually screaming all the time? Normally that sleep an awful lot for the first few days ime before they wake up and start screaming a lot.

StarlightWithAsteroid · 16/06/2012 19:33

He seems to need to feed even whilst asleep. My milk is white already, though I don't feel any fullness. It comes out the corner of his mouth.

He's a pickle. I'm hoping all it means is bfing is going well but WHEN am I meant to sleep?

I'm guessing all day in bed with newborn attached but there are things like paed appt to get to tomorrow which require 5yr old and 3yr old to be breakfasted and dressed etc and then mw appt on Mon Hmm

Apologies I didn't realise you had two other dc, are you the normal starlight? Why do you have to go out for a paed appt? The midwife should be coming to you. Congrats btw Smile

StarlightWithAsteroid · 16/06/2012 19:38

Ah, I'm just having a whine really. Had a homebirth. Being sent to paed. Midwife want me to attend clinic rather than visit a home (tis only a road a way).

OP posts:
StarlightWithAsteroid · 16/06/2012 19:40

Yes, probably the 'normal' Starlight! Grin

I'm sure all is fine and normal and we'll figure out the balance, but Blimey, I coukd really do with a less hungry baby!

YouBrokeMySmoulder · 16/06/2012 19:41

Well that's a pain in the arse isn't it, surely the whole point of the HO,ebirth is being able to stay at home and not go trekking to the hospital but it would be good to be properly checked for tongue tie I suppose.

It's so much more knackering with other dc isn't it gah.

llamallama · 16/06/2012 19:42

How was your birth??

You might want to think about cranial osteopathy if the birth was difficult, very long/very short, c-section or you had intervention. Your baby might have some tension and is sucking to relieve pain in his head.

topknob · 16/06/2012 19:45

Would you be willing to try a dummy ? Smile

StarlightWithAsteroid · 16/06/2012 19:45

Thanks LLamma. Birth was fine. Baby swam out slowly into pool. Not even gas and air (not exactly my choice, but mw forgot the pipe).

Can't imagine it is that as birth so gentle I refused vit k.

StarlightWithAsteroid · 16/06/2012 19:46

Top, not overly keen, but tried on my first and don't think he coukd keep it in so young.

OP posts:
YouBrokeMySmoulder · 16/06/2012 19:48

Maybe he is just one of those that eat more, if he is then he needs to let your body know early what will be required iyswim. Mine have all fed completely differently but it has calmed down quite quickly. Just rest even if you are not asleep, have you got help lined up for school/nursery runs?

YouBrokeMySmoulder · 16/06/2012 19:49

I wouldn't use a dummy until feeding properly established, about 3-4 weeks for me I reckon. If he needs to increase production then the dummy wil interfere with that

MrsFaffnBobbocks · 16/06/2012 19:55

Sounds like my dc2- also a boy. He screamed for the first 9 weeks if I put him down. Only way I managed with him and a 2yr old was a sling. It seemed to calm him until the feeds settled down. Sounds like your boy is a good feeder. So hopefully he'll get over thus newborn period soon. Having a newbie, sleep deprivation and two others can be a killer! I sympathize. It's impossible to comprehend how hard it is just to get out of the door!

If at all poss, try to ensure you eat regularly, just to keep up with marathon days. Good luck!

chocolatchaud · 16/06/2012 20:07

Congratulations!

My DCs have all been like this for the first week or so - I think they have all been quite big babies, and desperately wanted to get my milk volume up.

Just another thought - when you say you leave the nappies until full, if I understood correctly, could it be that baby isn't happy with that? One of my DCs could not stand having anything in their nappy, and although I thought all the crying and upset was due to wanting a feed, it was actually wanting a dry nappy on. It was DC4, so you would have thought I would have cottoned on by then!! Smile

StarlightWithAsteroid · 16/06/2012 20:31

Thanks choc. I'm still figuring it out tbh. Nappy changes seem to create a full rage, and I don't thinkni've ever seen his bottom without stuff coming out. It never seems to stop Hmm so I just change him and quickly get the next one on.

i had a home birth and everything came to me

my GP did her newborn "doctor check" in my bedroom (i was about a 2min walk away so not far either)

congratulations by the way... my DD fed constantly for 5 days, then had feeds (for 1 hour plus) every hour and 45mins

but she is 9m now and only has 4 5 - 10min feeds a day

digitalgirl · 16/06/2012 21:47

Congratulations starlight! Smile

Ds2 was a pretty voracious feeder in the first couple of weeks. He was a big(ish) baby and was gaining weight really well. Turned out he also had tongue tie which meant he needed to feed more often. Also explained why he couldn't open his mouth so wide (I too have ginormous nipples). By day 5 my nipples were torn to shreds - its worth ruling out tt to save you the pain.

openerofjars · 16/06/2012 21:53

Congratulations! I was wondering about you & so pleased you got your home birth!

DD now 2 weeks old & did exactly the same for a night when my milk came in, for a painful 10 hour night shift a couple of days in. She went into a more normal feeding pattern after that so hope your DS does the same.

StarlightWithAsteroid · 17/06/2012 08:58

Thank everyone!

I'll hold on to these thoughts to get me through:

He's quite big (8lb 9oz at birth) so has helped himself to more food than average so far!

He's just trying to get my milk level up to one that satisfies him. Once that is done, he'll be a little less demanding.

Latch needs more practice and nipple-mouth ration needs to improve, which will make feeding more efficient!

Right! That's my story and I'm sticking to it!!!!!!!!

OP posts:
openerofjars · 17/06/2012 12:15

Theoretically, the advantage of bigger babies is that once yer milk levels are up, they can go longer between feeds.

ceeveebee · 17/06/2012 12:27

Are you seriously going to go to clinic with a 2 day of baby and 2 older DCs? Just insist on a home visit. I didn't get dressed for a week and got the health visitors to come to me for weighing for weeks when I had my twins!

ceeveebee · 17/06/2012 12:28

2 day old not of!

YouBrokeMySmoulder · 17/06/2012 15:46

My big baby did that openerofjars, I was fully expecting constant feeding and within the first month she was pushing four hours, when I tried to feed her more she was horribly sick. She did catch down a lot though.

I had far too much milk, should have donated it really though am not sure if you're allowed after transfusions.

openerofjars · 17/06/2012 18:18

Yeah, DD, 2 weeks in, is doing about 4 hours between feeds (apart from last night, when a blocked nose meant we were a bit back to square 1) but she was 8lb at birth so not a tiny thing. She was a total manic norkmonster at first, though. I was considering lending her out as a sink & plug hole unblocker until she calmed down a bit.

How's it gone today, Starlight ?
