Anyone any experience with Domperidone/fenugreek for boosting milk supply?

I don't like hearing my best friend in tears

her new baby is about a week old and she is finding feeding him so agonisingly painful. She has contacted La leche etc etc who all agree her latch sounds fine. She finds the only thing that makes feeds bearable is when her milk comes down thick and fast. So she is considering one of the above to boost her supply. Any tips/experiences?

My sister also idolises Jack Newman. I don't. I think his book is great in terms of showing proper latching etc. but his protocol is complex with no guaranteed results. You could email him on behalf of your friend (that's what my sister did).

I don't know if the service that's started up in Islington would include her but I can ask one of the counsellors that I know if she's aware of anyone good closer to Southgate. Let me know if you need me to do that Enid.

DOesn't quite cover her area but maybe she could travel?

ENid - how is your friend?

jellyjelly · 19/02/2006 19:20

Who is jack newman? and what did he/she do?

NotQuiteCockney · 19/02/2006 19:24

I don't know where Southgate is, but I do suggest she try ABM and BFN. Alternatively, I have a lovely friend who lives around the corner from me who is a great BFC. Don't think she covers Southgate, though. (Fishie, the BFC you met, what was her first name or initial? I expect I know her, I know all the BFN people locally I think.)

I'd also want to know when the pain comes? Is it just when the baby latches on? Is it throughout the feed? Does she ever get the pain at other times? Is it a pin-stuck-in-nipple sort of pain? Or what? (I'd worry that the problem is yeast infection, bad latch or let-down pain (which sucks and can't be treated).)

Is the baby gaining ok? Is he weeing and pooing lots?

domperidome works, but you have to eat loads of it, and it gets quite expensive. I took it for several months and had no side efects. Nothing else worked. It was domperidone or formula.

Candiemom · 20/02/2006 09:56

Jack Newman wrote a book on breastfeeding called The Ultimate Breastfeeding Book of Answers. He's a GP from Canada.

Enid · 20/02/2006 10:12

spoke to her this w/e and the fenugreek seems to have had an impressive effect! she is feeling much happier and going to hold off on the domperidone for a bit.

Thanks so much for all your fabulous advice x Enid.

Oh, is he the guy who invented breast compression?

Glad to hear your friend is doing better, Enid.

popsycalindisguise · 20/02/2006 14:45

oh fab!
so glad it is working out enid

tiktok · 20/02/2006 16:25

I hope your friend cntinues to feel better, Enid....I am at a loss to understand how a counsellor could be sure on the phone that the latch is 'fine' - there is never any substitute for looking, in my experience.

Mothers in London are very badly served by midwifery help because of the severe shortage but a mother of a week old who is in pain deserves a lot of personal attention - she should not be left dangling, relying on volunteer helplines.

beejay · 20/02/2006 16:47

I had a LLL lady who came to my house in London, she was fantastic and saved me lots of pain and tears. Are you sure they won't come round?

Clure · 23/02/2006 12:55

I went to a LLL meeting and got some great advice and one to one on latching and general advice. I suffered cervical tear and big blood loss and so was anaemic which affected my milk supply. I hired breast pump from LLL and although it was really difficult, tiresome and time consuming i pumped to try to increase supply. Also took homeopathic treatment from health shop called Urtica Urens 6. Ate protein snacks too. i think all this helped as supply increased and have now been bf for a year.

SoupDragon · 23/02/2006 13:23

Every time I see "Domperidone" I think it says Dom Perignon. Sigh. If only...

Enif · 23/02/2006 13:28

the hv came round and made some tiny changes to the latch! Baby is now feeding really well and the fenugreek has been marvellous (although as she says its hard to know whether her supply would have increased anyway). She is much happier

magnolia1 · 23/02/2006 13:47

My hv did the same when dd4 was tiny (she is 2.5 now!!) that and the fenugreek worked wonders for me

Great to hear they are doing so well

JackieNo · 23/02/2006 13:50

Soupdragon - I always read it as 'Dom Perignon' too - just popped into this thread to say it, but you got there before me.

Amandamumtothree · 08/01/2011 20:50

Hi all. I'm bf my third child with tongue tie. The other two were tricky but h is the hardest. He becomes fussy and fretful immediately following the initial rush of letdown. He has had poor weight gain even loss sometimes despite feeding freq. I'm very sore. I express between 5-8 x a day depending on been in house. H is 5 months old and I've had loads of support from lactation consultant. She has recently suggested domperidone 20 mg 4 times a day. Reviewed side effects and actions and happy to try it. She thinks it's unlikely I'll get a sympathetic gp to prescribe it. Does anyone know where I can buy domperidone cheaper than £4.50 for 10? That's £30 a week.

Has anyone had their gp prescribe it?

Anyone got any thoughts on it's use/experience?

Thanks all.

barleycorn · 08/01/2011 20:58

My GP prescribed it for me when I was exclusively pumping for ds1. I got a copy of the protocol they use at St Mary's NICU, and waved it at them.

Once they understood what it was for, they were very helpful. And it was fantastic for increasing, then maintaining my supply.

Amandamumtothree · 08/01/2011 21:40

Thanks for tha advice barleycorn. I have a copy of a protocol from jack Newman, I'll go fore-armed with that.

podmumlet · 30/01/2011 14:46

Hi Amandamumtothree - could you (or anyone else?) post a link to the copy of the protocol?

I am beside myself having had to feed baby formula to up his fluids during phototherapy treatment for formula.

I just cannot get my supply to meet baby's demand due to the increased tummy size cause of the formula and the mini-break in bf (even if I was expressing) due to bleeding nipples and jaundice treatment. So, yesterday, DH went off to get domperidone.. It really does sting the purse, and would love to find something to take along to a GP to support my case....
