Anyone any experience with Domperidone/fenugreek for boosting milk supply?

I don't like hearing my best friend in tears

her new baby is about a week old and she is finding feeding him so agonisingly painful. She has contacted La leche etc etc who all agree her latch sounds fine. She finds the only thing that makes feeds bearable is when her milk comes down thick and fast. So she is considering one of the above to boost her supply. Any tips/experiences?

I took fenugreek briefly to boost my supply (expressing to build up the freezer)

It worked for me but not miraculously. Makes you stink though. I have an almost full pot here if she would like it?

Hope your friend is more comfortable soon.
Can a counsellor come round to the house and check 'in person' so to speak?

popsycalindisguise · 16/02/2006 20:50

does she have lansinoh?

Enid · 16/02/2006 20:53

yes I have sent lansinoh

she feels very unsupported and unfortunately I live miles away

she has tried to get a counsellor to come round but to no avail

how much fenugreek do you have to take??

i started with one tablet 3 times a day then you build it up
hold on let me search for a thread

Sounding fine and being fine aren't necessarily the same thing, I think she probably needs to see someone in person to check the latch - does her hospital have a breast feeding counsellor, or could she ring and see if there are any local NCT counsellors who could come and see her?

Enid · 16/02/2006 20:56

NCT permananetly busy she says

La Leche dont do home visits

does her local hospital run any sort of drop in clinic - am sure that it's the last thing she will feel like doing if she's having a horrible time with feeding anyway, but might be easiest way of getting someone to check what is happening. when is her mw next due to visit, or is her mw not much cop?

Enid · 16/02/2006 21:04

thanks everyone

she will refuse to ring another phone line I know she will

she just wants someone to come and help her.

I have found a great link to Jack Newmans (who she admires) article on domperidone and sent it to her.

thanks everyone

where in the country is she enid?

Enid · 16/02/2006 21:08

London! You'd think there would be supernanny types on scooters round there within the hour

If she's in london I'd recommend Clare Byam-Cook (as in the breastfeeding book). Clare will visit at your home or you can go to her - charged by the hour either way. Not cheap but worth her weight in do-gooding idiots (bad experience with one - "use ice-cubes to numb the pain, dear" yeah, right!). Wonderful woman!

popsycalindisguise · 16/02/2006 21:11

I know of someone in london who had a breastfeeding counsellor round...will see if i can find out more

Eeek · 16/02/2006 21:11

sorry - just seen your latest. Tell her to contact Clare asap. Clare works with the Christine Hill clinic in Chiswick. CAT me for phone number if she can't find it herself.

Jack Newman will reply to emails. My sister wrote to him when I was having difficulty and he sent all this great material back. I also saw Clare, who was great, very realistic and non-judgmental, if a bit brusque. Unfortunately, even with this help, it didn't work out for me and I am now bottle feeding.

Candiemom · 17/02/2006 09:46

ps I also did the domperidome which worked a bit. You can only take it for a few days I think.

welshmum · 17/02/2006 09:52

Whereabouts is she in London Enid? There are a few new services started up in North London - can give details if they'd be any use.
Otherwise I drank copious amounts of fennel tea and that improved my supply.

fishie · 17/02/2006 09:53

i had bf counsellor round three times, am in east london. was through breastfeeding network, her help was invaluable. it still bloody hurt though. here

Enid · 17/02/2006 10:09

i think she would faint if she got an email from Jack newman she idolises him

She is in North London (Southgate). details would be great, thanks welshmum.

I have special delivered her the fenugreek so she should get it today

i tried domperidone fennel tea and fenugreek too, no startling difference and the domp is rather expensive. i think it helped to increase supply, but alongside loads of feeding, so who knows? jack newman not too keen on it apart from specific probs either i think
