Red patch on boob, temperature, lumpy sore boob.

I know what it is. And I don't want it!

Oh No!!

Get to the out of hours doctors first thing in the morning.

expatinscotland · 29/01/2006 00:00

Fuck. NHSDirect/24?

edodgy · 29/01/2006 00:04

try and get baby to feed off the sore boob as well while massaging gently downwards in circular movements you maybe able to unblock it.

hunkermunker · 29/01/2006 00:05

Am waiting for NHS Direct to ring me back (through out of hours GP service) - they said it'd be within two hours about half an hour ago. Rang the labour ward (contact number given for women with babies under 28 days) - midwife was sympathetic, but said I had to wait till morning to see a GP.

DS2 has fed and fed the last couple of days - he's 10 days old and has gained 15oz... This evening, he's slept and slept - he's over his growth spurt, it would seem!

I used to go in the shower and the warm water would sooth me. I could also massage and empty my breast out a little. Seemed to help me.

hunkermunker · 29/01/2006 00:06

Have been expressing a bit - don't want to over-express - lump's on the top of my boob, so the advice to feed the baby with chin towards lump requires serious acrobatics (and DS2 is too sleepy atm).

Pardon the ignorance..................bottle feeder here (medical, not an option) but WTF is going on ??

hunkermunker · 29/01/2006 00:08

Mastitis - or plugged duct, but have a temp, so suspect mastitis.

Squarer · 29/01/2006 00:10

Shite - I got that last New Years Eve - am sorry to hear that.

Hope you get sorted soon (antibiotics for me)

edodgy · 29/01/2006 00:11

I agree with sparkler try a warm shower directed at sore bit and massage at the same time.

LadySherlockofLGJ · 29/01/2006 00:12

Ah, not good then, can you insist on an out of hours doctor ?? Or just use one boob until you get some AB's but........if they take 48 hours to work you are looking at Wednesday.

Shag it, insist on out of hours doctor.

Squarer · 29/01/2006 00:16

Yes, if you have mastitis you need to get hold of some antbiotics really.

Problem is, my out of hours doctors is over an hours drive return (dread to think what London is like). Good news is, I spoke to out of hours doctor on phone and ended up that DP had to do all the driving to pick up prescription.

hunkermunker · 29/01/2006 00:18

Have just expressed 4oz - is a bit more comfy. Will try feeding him from above, with his feet pointing away from me. Norktastic...!

NHS Direct have phoned back. They said it sounds like mastitis and has been passed through to the out-of-hours dr. They can call back any time in the next six hours!

OP posts:
SPARKLER1 · 29/01/2006 00:33

6 hours??

I definitely recommend going in the shower. even if it doesn't help the pain or clear the blockage - NHS direct will call you back just as you step in!!!!! [gri]

hunkermunker · 29/01/2006 00:36

Yes, will go and get in the shower. Have wide-toothed comb, will use that to comb blockage. Damn. I know what to do, I just am annoyed that I have it when I do know what to do! Oh, the irony, eh?!

The feeding with the chin in the right place thing really works. I had a foul attack of near-mastitis (got the temperature, felt really bad), and managed to fend it off with goofy feeding positions. DS2 still likes to feed while sitting on my head. Whoops.

Hope you get this sorted, best to avoid the anti-bs if you can.

Laura032004 · 29/01/2006 09:02

I'm prone to mastitis, (have taken a/b's for it 6+ times in 22m), so now I always keep a packet of a/b's in the drawer so I can treat it early. Depends how helpful your doctor is . Mine doesn't even 'check' anymore when I say I have it.

Having said that, a/b's really don't agree with me (start of a month of thrush usually!) so I have got through mild attacks without them.

dinny · 29/01/2006 13:31

Hunker (hi!) when I had my recent blocked duct or whatever it was I had temp and fluey symptoms. managed to clear it with hot baths/flannels/combing and acrobatic feeding. but you know all that. ow, thinking of you x

mears · 29/01/2006 13:48

Antibiotics are not always needed for mastitis because it isn't always technically an infection.

You can try treating this simply with extra feeds, massaging the lump and taking regular Ibuprophen (nurofen,/ brufen). That may well head it off at the pass. HTH.

nailpolish · 29/01/2006 13:57

hi hunker sorry to hear you are not well

i had really bad mastitis, hv gave me antibiotics from the dr but i binned them. just fed through it and took paracetamol. i found feeding dd whilst lying down was good. (mu lump and redness was on the underside of boob)

good luck x

hunkermunker · 29/01/2006 14:58

Have been feeding bending over DS2 on the bed - all I see his his chin moving up and down and his earlobes waggling - it looks HILARIOUS! ALmost worth having this horrible red patch... I have a very warped sense of humour though (you may have noticed).

Haven't got antibiotics - will go to doctor tomorrow if no better (out of hours doc rang at 2.40am - I'd just gone to sleep!). Now have 10oz milk in the freezer though - will come in handy in the future, I'm sure

Just about to have another bath.

NotQuiteCockney · 29/01/2006 15:46

I find it funny feeding DS2 while he sits on my head, as long as I can still breathe, and read my book.

Sounds like you might be on the mend? Or at least not getting loads worse ...

hunkermunker · 29/01/2006 17:45

NQC, does he still think you have hidden extra boobs?

I'm feeling OK - still have a red patch, but it's less lumpy and sore. Expressing milk under water is an odd thing to do, isn't it?!
