Petition to train midwives in diagnosing and treating tongue tie

Hi all. Some of you may know I've posted on here and in AIBU about our problems with DS's TT before now and how frustrating the whole experience has been...resulting in DS( now 15 weeks) not being able to breastfeed. If only it had been picked up earlier and then treated in a reasonable amount of timet things may have been very different.
Anyway, have found a petition requesting that MWs be trained in diagnosing and treating TT so fewer people have to go through this in future. It would be very much appreciated if you could take the time to sign. Thanks all and good luck.

Done.

I'm an adult with an untreated tie and so knew to look for it in my babies, tbf when I spotted ds2 had it he was treated quickly, but had it been spotted when I couldn't bf him for the first 34 hrs and had to swap to bottle just to get something in him.

MixedBerries · 30/01/2012 21:36

Thanks NickNacks. Glad the outcome was good for your son! (And you).

Both of mine had tongue tie - DS spent his first week of life starving and screaming & never breast fed successfully even after having his tongue snipped. It caused me a huge amount of heart ache.

Petition signed and posted to Facebook!

MixedBerries · 30/01/2012 21:41

Thanks CornsihKK. I started a thread about this on AIBU a while ago and it was heartbreaking reading how common our situation is/was.

Our mw/ nurses in hospital are trained. But not very well.
Ds had one which was spotted and snipped at 5 wks. It grew back so didn't help.

With dd I knew the feeling and signs. 11 different mw/ nurses looked and told me it was fine. The feeding specialist was passing and within 2 seconds she had diagnosed it. It was snipped at 3 days, 3 weeks and 5 weeks. It kept re growing.

Training is great but it needs to be proper good quality training - not just tick the box exercises.

I've signed the petition tho. :)

Done.

Everyone that signs needs to post done in here to keep this thread active so as many people as possible see it.

I diagnosed my ds's tongue tie even though he had been examined by a paediatrician and not noticed, Hmm

Have signed.

MixedBerries · 04/02/2012 17:48

Thanks everyone!

I have signed too. The Midwives in the hospital mentioned it to me but did not diagnose it. However by mentioning it I was able to query it with the Health Visitor when DS struggled to feed.

Done.
Well found.

Done

nextphase · 04/02/2012 19:42

since my last post did nothing, here it is again.

Moomachine · 04/02/2012 20:27

Done. It's madness not to check and treat such a simple thing when it causes such major issues with feeding.

MixedBerries · 04/02/2012 20:33

Thank you!

Done. I knew nothing about tongue tie but, when having bf issues, a lactation consultant spotted it. Had it sorted privately at 13 weeks. Still got issues and I'm sure we wouldn't be in this position had it been sorted at birth. x

Tooblunt2012 · 05/02/2012 12:18

Signed. Well done for highlighting.

aethelfleda · 05/02/2012 18:16

Welll done hon. My DC3 has just had his treated at 4 weeks, I really had to push for a referral despite very long feeds and slow growth: some of the MWs were great but a few were v unhelpful (one was pushing for formula topups) I've asked them to address this locally but petitions are
Great to raise awareness of this important issue.

Mombojombo · 05/02/2012 18:35

Done, shared on Facebook & Tweeted!

AngelDog · 05/02/2012 20:10

Thanks. I suspect my 2 y.o. has one but I don't think it was even checked for in the early days.

Dencar · 05/02/2012 23:19

Thankyou.
Have done and forwarded on.

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 05/02/2012 23:32

Done & emailed the petition writer with a reminder that it causes speech problems too - I could see them otherwise not bothering to treat bottlefed babies.

Brilliant name Aethelfleda.
