'Extreme' breastfeeding? really?!

midori1999 · 22/12/2011 11:12

I saw this article linked to on another site and wondered if it might include women Bf whilst sky diving or something... However, not much that is 'extreme' about it as far as I can see. Yes, it is the daily fail, yet agaib bashing BF women, or in fact, just women in general, but it has really annoyed me, especially the comments from the 'Bf counsellor'. Hmm

It's the infamous C B-C who thinks bfing toddlers is worse than giving them Cola as they are both full of sugar.

Not worth another seconds thought!

KellyKettle · 22/12/2011 11:51

I agree with truthsweet awful article and CBC - I think she has a cheek to call herself a bf counsellor tbh. I would truly not be surprised to find she was secretly being paid to undermine breastfeeding.

I have had support from infant feeding coordintors, NCT bfc and LLL bfc and none of them have ever spoken about bf or bf mothers in the negative way she does.

They could have asked Anna Burbidge for a sound bite but the fact that they picked CBC , to me, means they knew which way they wanted this piece to go.

Very sad. Xmas Sad

KellyKettle · 22/12/2011 11:53

I do like some of the comments though:

"Breastmilk is absorbed through the system and doesn't go through the intestines like formula - that is why breast fed babies are hungrier"

Xmas Grin I think she really just made that up.

TruthSweet · 22/12/2011 11:56

Kelly - Huh? That is one weird comment to make - that can't have been C B-C can it??

KellyKettle · 22/12/2011 11:57

Oh no, sorry, I am sure even she wouldn't say that.

It was Fiona from Ireland in the comments at the bottom.

tiktok · 22/12/2011 11:58

Kelly, I think that commentator meant it does not break through the intestinal wall and enter the blood stream, whereas cows milk proteins can, and thus increase the risk of allergy.

But it sounds very odd the way she put it!

The whole article is bollocks - what is wrong or 'extreme' about boosting milk supply with medical intervention? We accept that some women may have medical intervention to conceive in the first place, or to give birth safely? Are those interventions and assistance 'extreme'?

TruthSweet · 22/12/2011 11:59

Thank Christ for that! Some people are a bit dim, aren't they? What 'system' if not the intestines? Who knows!

PenguinArmy · 22/12/2011 13:19

what a horrible article on so many levels

nethunsreject · 22/12/2011 13:21

Aye, it's a horrid article and though this is a cliche, it is typical DM stuff.

Nothing extreme about it.

tiktok · 22/12/2011 13:49

penguin - it's Christmas. I allow myself all sorts of sweary rudeness :)

(You should hear me in real life.....!)

ChunkyPickle · 22/12/2011 14:03

I dunno - I think that committing to taking hormones/pumping/heartache to get yourself producing milk for your adopted child is pretty extreme really - in an amazing way though, not the way the DM seems to be trying to portray it.

LadyBeckenham · 22/12/2011 15:57

I was very amused by the description of Clare By-My-Book - 'a passionate advocate of breastfeeding'.

Well there you go then Grin

TruthSweet · 22/12/2011 16:03

If by passionate they meant peddlar of cobbled together old wives tales and brusque no nonsense (or should I say no compassion) telling like it is (if you are sponsored by Big Pharma's Baby Division that is) they have got it spot on.

If by passionate they meant evidenced based, thoroughly researched, physiologically proven methods and on a gentle baby led (but with the mother still a huge concern) basis then they got the wrong person and should have called TikTok instead (I'm not biased at all, oh no).

LadyBeckenham · 22/12/2011 16:05

I didn't read the comments, I reckon my blood pressure is not up to it.

hohohEauRouge · 22/12/2011 16:12

More mother-hating crap from the DM. And why, oh why do journos repeatedly interview Clare BuyMy-Book? Why can't they interview someone who actually knows one end of a boob from the other?

theboobmeister · 22/12/2011 17:55

Because Clare Buy My Book is a shameless self-promoter, she has an agent who gets her media appearances etc.

What we need is a rival media whore publicity-minded person who is also a genuine breastfeeding expert. Sadly, I think most breastfeeding people are too modest and self-aware to volunteer for the job.

organiccarrotcake · 22/12/2011 18:35

TT beat me to the "bollocks" comment.

I do hate crappy articles like this which simply take women who understand the importance of breastfeeding and turn them into freaks. We should be celebrating them, not making them look like weirdos. Daily Fail Angry.

I'll tell you what is extreme breastfeeding. Breastfeeding in a lion sanctuary where I nipped out of the car to pose for the photo coz of the cute zebra in the background (blatently adding to my extreme breastfeeding photo collection) and was quickly threatened in no uncertain terms with eviction from the sanctuary by rangers trying to make sure we weren't eaten by, well, lions.

See, breastfeeding is dangerous. Should be banned.

(For the record it was open savanna with nowhere for lions to hide and we were with a local Maasai guide who said it was safe Grin)

Maybe I should contact the Daily Mail?

4madboys · 22/12/2011 18:51

now that IS extreme organiccarrot i want to see the pic! Grin btw did you post under another name to do with carrots? i seem to remember you having issues as your dd? was slow to gain weight? but you perservered and put up a good fight with health professionals? sorry if i am wrong, but i remember your posts if it was you :)

organiccarrotcake · 22/12/2011 18:57

Not me, no :) I have used other carrot-related usernames in the past but not for a few years :) There are a few of us here though. I don't have a daughter either (well, one DC in progress so I might :) )

I don't put up personal info behind my profile but I might consider starting to put up some of my BFing ones just for laughs!! I have another where I inadvertently fed DS2 on the police's viewing platform at Hull fair!! Seemed like a convenient set of steps to me Grin until my mum said, "Erm, I just realised what these steps are for" and I looked behind me to see a few patient policemen waiting for us to finish... I apologised and they basically said not to be silly and they weren't going to move us on!

4madboys · 22/12/2011 19:01

ah it was something like 'tinylittlecarrot' ? sorry to have got you muddled, congrats on the pregnancy ,it is no 3?

organiccarrotcake · 22/12/2011 19:02

Erm, where else? Oh - I was feeding DS2 in at Legoland in Manchester on the troll-shooting ride and didn't realise it was one of those rides that you get a photo taken on. So there's me with DS2 in the dark, and, as I thought, private, at a time when DS2 was small and struggling with his latch due to tongue tie, so I was - erm - all out, plus DH and DH1 all trying to shoot troll things displayed in full technicolour on those screens as we left the ride!! I obviously bought the keyring, fridge magnet and photo of that one, if only for the look on the face of the young lad who had to print them and put them together.

organiccarrotcake · 22/12/2011 19:02

Oh verylittlecarrot. No, she's not me. Thank you! Yes, DC3. Glutton for punishment, me. Or just an excuse to get some tandeming photos in extremis.

4madboys · 22/12/2011 19:04

lol i have bfed in legoland as well, no pics tho! three is fine and so is tandem feeding, i have 5! done now tho Grin

organiccarrotcake · 22/12/2011 19:08

5 - wow - your house must be full of fun!

Come on though - I'm not the only one with proper extreme stories. I know we've had these discussions before and some of them are great but I love to hear them.

organiccarrotcake · 22/12/2011 19:11

I also got LL Manchester to add onto their website that BFing was welcome anywhere in the centre. www.legolanddiscoverycentre.co.uk/manchester/plan-your-visit/plan-your-visit.aspx

Quite proud of that even though I still don't feel the wording is quite right.
