Breast fed baby with explosive poos! HELP please!

Josi23 · 12/12/2011 12:53

Hi

My DD2 is 3 months old but has been suffering from explosive poos since she was born. I'm not sure what I'm doing or eating that may be causing this. Or is this normal for a breast fed baby?

DD2's poos are yellow but are quite runny rather than cottage cheese like....what does this mean? I feel like I am forever changing her clothes after a leak disaster! She's gaining weight well and has even gone up a percentile (now on the 75th) for weight so I know that she's getting enough milk...

Should I take her to the doctors?

Please help! I never had this with DD1...

Thank you

This is a nuisance, but it sounds as if it is on the normal spectrum, even so!

There are many babies (inc mine :) ) who did/do this all the time, and the best thing to do is to work out the best way to contain the explosion - and to accept that you take a change of clothing with you wherever you go.

It's not normally anything to do with health or your diet or anything you can control at all.....sorry!

Check with your HV if you are worried, just to be sure, though.

SinicalSanta · 12/12/2011 12:58

my dd is the same, but I don't think it's a problem part from laundry.

Someone told me a bf baby's poos should be like scrambled eggs. Well my dd's is like when you beat the eggs in a bowl, that's part of the scrambling process so ok apparently.

Whatever is normal for your individual baby IS normal. Any sudden change is worth thinking about.

MrsHollyandtheIvy · 12/12/2011 13:04

When you say 'suffering', do you meal the poos are giving her grief? If so, then possibly have a chat with your HV. However, IME, explosive poos are very normal for a BF baby - they certainly were for my two!

As SinicalSanta says, any change is worth a second opinion, but if this is her norm, then I think that's just the way it is!

nannyl · 12/12/2011 13:04

sounds pretty normal

i recommend cloth nappies... a decent shaped nappy topped with a motherease air flow wrap.

My 3 month old has only leaked 3 times in her life (and never needed more than a new vest / tights at those leaks) There is no way disposable would have coped in the same way cloth have.

It means i wash poo-ey nappies, not poo-ey clothes and her clothes dont get ruined with poo stains either Smile

Josi23 · 12/12/2011 13:06

Thanks for the reassurance tiktok SinicalSanta

I have the hv coming on Wednesday so I'll check with her then. Just so worried because I was also told it should be like cottage cheese/scrambled eggs.

And yes, trying to control the explosion more effectively sounds like the way forward. It's often when I lay her down to be changed that it all seeps out the nappy (at the back).

Thanks again :). It's nice to know i'm not the only one.

Hi nannyl

I tried cloth nappies...little lamb clothes with motherease air flow wrap but DD just cries from the moment I put them on. It's not because they are too tight but I think it's because she really doesn't like having a full nappy (disposable) and a real nappy is so fat that maybe it makes her feel like she has a full nappy...? That's the only thing I can think of. It's sad because cloth nappies are so lovely, but she just screams everytime I put her in one :(. Such a waste of money too, they don't come cheap.

Thanks

DD 4 mo sounds exactly the same - runny yellow hell with little whitish seeds in it.

I agree that it's much better contained in cloth nappies; I use close parent nappies with a homemade fleece liner. In paper, we could have armpit-to-knee pooplosions Grin Grin

tiktok · 12/12/2011 14:29

'close parent nappies' - must be a typo, but what??? :)

Firsttimer1007 · 12/12/2011 14:35

I've had the same problem with my bf baby. I just take a few vests and a change if clothes everywhere, and I recommend Ariel stain remover powder, it has saved me throwing away quite a few outfits lol!

RudolphsKerfuffle · 12/12/2011 14:47

Maybe try your reusable wraps over disposable nappies to see if it contains the leaks better?

Rikalaily · 12/12/2011 14:56

God, I don't miss those poo's. Sounds normal for a bfed baby, I definately noticed the difference between dispo's and cloth for this, I used cloth with no.2&3 and dispo's with no.1&4 and the cloth were sooo much better at containing the masses of poo. I'm stuggling with the washing so decided to use dispo's this time, big mistake, just as much washing as using cloth because I was washing pooed on clothes just as much. Will be going back to cloth if we have a no.5!

None of my bfed babies have had scrambled egg type poo, was always yellow/golden, runny with seedy type white bits in it.

fairimum · 12/12/2011 15:02

try going up a size in nappies? my sister in law had her baby in a newborn nappy with the next size up over the top, which seemed to work!

mousysantamouse · 12/12/2011 15:07

sounds absolutely normal
I remember those times well. I tried many different nappies and at the time pampers active fit also had this net structure that soaked up the soft poo before it went up to the neck. but the bastards they have changed the design now...

DazedDazzledandConfused · 12/12/2011 15:53

Same thing happening here. I normally use real nappies but had washing machine problems so been using disposables. At night I put a close parent wrap over the disposable. The nappy doesn't leak at all not even onto the wrap.

Catsu · 12/12/2011 16:04

Same here. Dd is 3 months and poos up to 10 times a day. Usually 1 or 2 full clothing changes a day!
She actually costs me more in nappies from her bf poo than her brother cost me in formula and nappies at the same age! And I thought bf'ing would be cheaper!!

Iggly · 12/12/2011 16:07

Same here! The noise is quite something.

DS was quite a milk monster so a lot of poo to contend with.

However BF poo is much nicer compared to those you get when they start solids Hmm

mousysantamouse · 12/12/2011 16:08

my dc sounded like a posh coffee mashine.
latte anyone? :o

nancerama · 12/12/2011 16:11

Same for my DS. Enormous explosive poos 5 times a day!

Sunlight is my friend. I use washable nappies most of the time, but disposables from time to time. I dry all my clothes and nappies on the washing line outdoors. Even if they are still stained out of the machine, they go sparkly white again after a couple of hours in the sun.

With disposables, I always make sure he's in the biggest size for his weight (if you look at the weight ranges on the nappy packets, you may find your baby straddles 2 or even 3 sizes). Move them to the bigger size as soon as they hit the minimum weight for the next size.

KD0706 · 12/12/2011 21:06

Oh yes we had these too. DDs pops were like off yoghurt I always thought!!

I second the suggestion to move up a size in nappies as soon as you can.

BaronessBomburst · 13/12/2011 00:44

I seriously considered hiring out DS to the local farmers. I thought they could strap him to the back of a tractor and use him to slurry the fields....

I moved up a size in nappies though, and that helped, so I'm thirding the suggestion. Xmas Grin

GetOffTheCat · 13/12/2011 02:04

Close parent is a brand. They make slings and nappies which are rather good! The nappies have a double frill which works well to contain awful poos Grin

Jacksmania · 13/12/2011 03:41

DS had explosive poos. The kind where the poo goes all the way up the back and when I pulled his onesie over his head he'd have poo in his hair. He had them for A Long, Long Time. (He also breastfed for A Long, Long Time :o).
I hated those poos.

TruthSweet · 13/12/2011 04:27

DD3 who is 2.2y has explosive poos if she gorges herself on bm. Yesterday I had a lie in on Sunday after a late night out on the town and DH played on his computer in bed while DD3 came in and out of bed to have a feed so had about 8 feeds instead of her usual 1 in the morning. Boy did I know it this afternoon! Luckily she has just gone up a size in nappy pants so they were very Simon Cowell and contained it.

I used to use cloth (Little Lambs) but DD1 could shoot her poo out past 2 elasticated leg cuffs and fill her sleepsuit legs up and up the back. Being as she was my PBF I kept a pair of scissors in the change box so that I could cut her clothes off her (was terrified of getting poo in her mouthHmm). DD2 & DD3 I just used to cover their mouths and hope for the bestGrin. I did find Pampers and Huggies worked as poo funnels as then the backs weren't elasticated but supermarket own ones all seem to be so we went with the cheaper brands and got better results.

Mombojombo · 13/12/2011 08:24

I use bamboo terries during the day as I can create poonami-catching folds and tucks. For night time, a friend tipped me off about Aldi nappies. Must admit I was sceptical, but they come up bigger than other disposables (ie. a size 3 Aldi is bigger than a size 3 Huggies) and we've rarely had an overspill in them.

CollieandPup · 14/12/2011 07:49

Hi can I gate crash? Ds is 3 weeks and his poos are just like this. Yellow and very runny and usually in the form of an explosion! My problem is, he has a tendency to store them up for when his nappy is off. I'd been warned about baby boys weeing everywhere...,but his literally projectile poos while I'm changing his nappy.

Anyone else had this? Normal? (doesn't feel it, everyone else looks at me in horror!) can I do anything?
