Tit caught in the mangle

At least that's what it feels like, owwwwwwwwwwwww.

Littleun isn't the best at opening her mouth really wide and during night feeds I guess we're both a bit lazy and not doing it properly.

This morning my entire left boob feels like it's been in the mangle, it's so so tender and sensitive. I can touch the skin and the nipple itself doesn't feel cracked or sore, just the whole boob. Can't feel any little hard lumps so don't think it's a blocked duct and I feel fine in myself no signs of flu or anything.

I guess I should maybe express from that side today while it's so, so tender and painful and make sure she feeds better from the other one?

yeeeoooow and sympathies. Not got much expertise at bfing (only managed a few weeks), but I would expect it to be your nipple rather than your whole boob feeling sore if it was positioning problems, so I think you should try and see mw/doctor or someone today if you can to check it out.

NomDePlume · 07/01/2006 13:05

This has to go on the 'Funniest MN Thread Titles Ever' list, TC

The pain thing sounds awful. I can't offer any advice on it either, but hopefully Pupuce or TikTok or someone equally knowledgable will be along any minutes. Sympathies, TC.

Thomcat · 07/01/2006 13:05

Oh no, does anyone else think I should get i people it looked at?
I hate seeing people about things if it's just how it has to be and will gat better on its own.
If it's still bad on Tuesday when I'm free and Lottie is back at school, can I see someone then, not before?

OP posts:
mummytosteven · 07/01/2006 13:05

ooooh just had a thought - could you be engorged in that boob? see if expressing some off helps?

(i'm a danger to MN trying to give bfing advice I think!!!)

NomDePlume · 07/01/2006 13:06

Can you phone your midwife to check ?

mummytosteven · 07/01/2006 13:07

Roisin blistered my left nipple in her first day of life, TC. OW! It was really sore. I expressed off that boob for a week and was religious about Lansinoh creme. Do it LOTS. I expressed about 6times/day until she got back on it one week after birth and it was healed up nicely. It's a PITA ,I know.

A long, long visit to the NCT counsellor helped sort out her latch and we haven't had any problems since!

Give them a phone.

Prufrock · 07/01/2006 13:25

If it's the whole boob that feels sore it dounds more like engorgement or possibly mastitis rather than problems with the latch. Does it feel/look swollen?
Try expressing some milk off and see if that relieves it. Cold cabbage leaves or warm towels (soak muslins in boiling water, wring out and wrap around boob when cool enough to touch) can also help.
If you are getting shooting pains in the boob, particularly when feeding/expressing, it could possibly be thrush.

Pennies · 07/01/2006 13:32

Similar problem here resulted in LOTS of expressing for a week and eventually I went to Dr who gave me cream for thrush (there were no symptoms in the baby luckily). That was a week ago and I can now feed on that side though it's still uncomfortable but it feels much better. Felt like stabbing pains right through the boob during and after the feed. Really feel for you and know what you're going through.

NotQuiteCockney · 07/01/2006 13:48

Sounds like engorgement/mastitis/thrush, rather than latch. But as others have said, see someone from the LLL/ABM/BFN/NCT.

Prufrock · 07/01/2006 14:21

Pennies - even if your baby has no symptoms they should still be treated. The baby could be ahrbouring thrush in it's mouth and never have symptoms, but still be passing it back to you. GP's never seem to realise this but it is very important fo you BOTH to be treated. This is standard advice from NCT/ LLL/ any doctor who actually knows how to treat bf mothers and many posters here)(Baby should be given Nystatin drops I think)

popsycalindisguise · 07/01/2006 14:46

have you gto any lansinoh cream for starters?
I have an unopened tube i can post to you today.......

also second contacting nct or someone to get latch corrected

popsycalindisguise · 07/01/2006 14:47

just read it properly....

duh!
does the pain stay after a feed then go away after an hour?
is the pain deep in your whole boobed or localised to one aprticular area which hurts all the time?
does the pain hurt more right at the start of a feed then eases after say 10 seconds?

Thomcat · 07/01/2006 14:48

Well had long chat and now i fluey andyuck asell. NCT woman says it sounds like deffo mastitus AND thrush

Just fed liitleun for the last hour with small breaks from sore boob. come down to take paracetemol and drink water.

how rubbish

OP posts:
popsycalindisguise · 07/01/2006 14:49

thomcat - i really wouldnt wait until tuesday tbh...
I have had thrush 3 times and you have to treat it

get daktarin cream for your boobs and daktarin oral gel for baby......

expatinscotland · 07/01/2006 14:50

TC
any chance of ringing NHS direct adn getting an out of hours appointment? i hear mastisis and thrush can get REALLY painful and getting some ab's early might help a bit.

hunkermunker · 07/01/2006 14:55

If it's mastitis, the quicker you're on antibiotics, the better. Ditto thrush - you need to get seen. You poor love

Is that walk-in private GP place in Pinner open atm? Can't remember its name, but it's on the way into Pinner, before you get to Sainsbury's - might save you waiting if your GP's not open now.

Mastitis will make you feel appalling - Aloha had it lately and posted about it.

If there's anything I can do - I can get to Sainsbury's and get you some Daktarin cream and oral gel for bubs if you like? Just say the word x x x

suedonim · 07/01/2006 16:04

Oh, how horrid, TC. If you think it's mastitis I agree with the others who say they wouldn't wait until Tuesday; you could end up with an abcess by then. When I had mastitis I've contacted GP's in the evening and on a Sunday and it seems to be regarded as an emergency so no one will think you're making a fuss or anything.

Aloha · 07/01/2006 16:08

No! Don't wait. You need antibiotics NOW. I've had mastitis recently, ignored the initial symptons and in teh end thought I was going to die of it - honestly, vomiting, feeling totallyl space out and shivering so violently I could hardly keep the duvet over me.

When you feel fluey mastitis does not just go away - it gets worse but antibiotics work miracles. If no other choice go to A&E.
