Tit caught in the mangle

At least that's what it feels like, owwwwwwwwwwwww.

Littleun isn't the best at opening her mouth really wide and during night feeds I guess we're both a bit lazy and not doing it properly.

This morning my entire left boob feels like it's been in the mangle, it's so so tender and sensitive. I can touch the skin and the nipple itself doesn't feel cracked or sore, just the whole boob. Can't feel any little hard lumps so don't think it's a blocked duct and I feel fine in myself no signs of flu or anything.

I guess I should maybe express from that side today while it's so, so tender and painful and make sure she feeds better from the other one?

Sorry for naughty use of thread title.

Ibuprofen good for mastitis. Sympathies, it is horrid.

Thomcat · 07/01/2006 17:41

A&E! Oh no, no way. I've rung NHS Direct and they'll phone me back.
Taken parecetamol and then some Ibuprofen and feel better already.
Have fed her off sore boob and at same time gently massaged it and it wasn't too painful. I'll ring GP first thing Monday morning, unless if I get to speak to NHS direct they say something different. But apart from tenderness I really don't feel that bad, honest.

Hunker - got your text about half hour ago, you lovely lady. You concentrate on keeping yourself rested, you could have that baby anytime. Can't wait to hear about it all, how exciting Home births rock

Aloha - oh honey - I missed that you were so ill with it, so osrry to hear that, you poor thing

I'll be fine, hopnest, taken painkillers, D cooking, Lottie staying at my best friends house tonight, will have a glass of wine in the bath and be chilled and happy. Have breast gel pads in fridge, lanolin cream in cabinet and promise to ring GP on Monday asap.

Most important thing is bubaloo is feeding ok, is happy and sleeping peacefully as I type.

It feels exactly like that doesn't it Lockets, exactly like a mangle squeezed the life out of it and it's now all bruised and tender.

Owwwww. Sympathy. Had mastitis myself and thought it was worth than giving birth, tbh.

NotQuiteCockney · 07/01/2006 19:55

If you have a pump, pump on the bad side, particularly after feeds. A lot of feeding can sort out mastitis, if it's not got too bad, but you need to be quick, and lucky.

Lua · 07/01/2006 20:24

Tc, as all other said mastitis can be nasty! and the quicker you dela with it the better!
on the other hand.... I read in a bunch of places (maybe Kelly moon too...) that most mastitis solve itself in 24 hours. If it doesn't or if you have a fever then you should run to the doctor as fast as you can.
Mine was all red at the skin level, and very sore. It also had a blocked duct (that I only dicovered when I was showing to DH and asking for ympathy and he said - what is that pimple?....)
Anyway, paracetomol, rest and continuing feeding made it better in 24 hours, so avoided the ab's.... it took another week to feel 100%.
All i'm saying is keep checking your temp. I think as long as you remain cool, you can do the 24 hour test.
all the best!

mrsdarcy · 07/01/2006 20:58

I had mastitis when DD was about 10 days old and it flared up really quickly. I held off the ABs as long as I could (12 hours) but if you need them then you REALLY need them.

For the thrush, one midwife suggested putting a v small film of canesten on the nipple after a feed, which would have disappeared by the next feed. I don't know if everyone would recommend this though.

Hope it clears up soon. Poor you. I remember that horrid feeling - it's as though you've been punched on the boob

Thomcat · 08/01/2006 00:49

Thanks everyone. Don't feel feverish, feel fine apart from sore boob. I just expressed until there was nowt left and took some more paracetemol and have drunk lots of water. Spoke to NHS direct and she didn't panic me and just said it should be ok in 24 hrs but to keep an eye on it. She thinks the itching is more likey my boobs just stretching and being full and that was my instinct feeling about it so hopefully we're right and it's not thrush as well. Fingers crossed all ok by Sunday.

Fingers crossed, TC - if boob gets lumpy or sore, have a warm shower and use a wide-toothed comb to comb across the lumps towards your nipple - the even pressure helps (don't press too hard).

You can take ibuprofen when you're bfeeding - it might bring any swelling down better?
