Hi
Want to wean DS2 off me and onto a bottle, he's 8mths. DS1 had no problem so figured DS2 would be the same! No! Tried SMA Progress and he vomitted after one mouthful, tried again and vomitted again. Tried the next day with it half strength and the same reaction. Now trying Actimel powder tomorrow, if this doesn't work what can i do???

Do you mean aptamil?

Maybe try first stage milk, rather than follow-on stuff, which seems to taste awfully bitter - first infant milk is sweeter I think.

hunkermunker · 15/12/2005 22:48

Definitely wouldn't bother with follow-on milk. Try infant formula - it contains all the things he'll need, and please don't worry about iron.

blueshoes · 16/12/2005 13:41

Qsack, vomiting sounds like a reaction from ds' body, rather than a taste thing. Could he be allergic to dairy? Sorry, not being very helpful here (no experience with allergies) but bumping up this thread.

beejay · 16/12/2005 14:22

My daughter hated formula, spent weeks getting her to accept it and when I finally did get her to drink a bottle, she went bright red and itchy all over, lips went blue etc. She was definitely allergic! Went back to B/F then introduced soya formula, again with a struggle....
So she ended up having soya and breast milk till she was nearly 2...
thankfully not allergic anymore

qsack · 16/12/2005 16:09

hi
thanks for your messages. he's not dairy allergic as he has whole milk in his cereal. he was sick almost the second he took a mouthful so i can't believe it's an allergic reaction?
yes, it probably is aptimel, a friend lent me some and tried it today. he didn't vomit but refused it after a mouthful and got himself in a state about it.
i might try mixing formula with breast milk and see if that helps.

I saw on another thread recently that HIPP organic follow-on is supposed to be creamier tasting. Dd2 is fully breastfed but I use the Hipp for her cereal (yes, I do know I could use cow's milk!).

There was a bit left over the other morning so I put in a beaker for her - she seemed to like it!

RudiRedNose · 16/12/2005 17:27

I suggest trying a small carton of sma gold ready made infant milk. It costs about 50p and you won't have to worry about making it up. Then if baby likes it you can get the big tub!
My dd is still on sma gold age 10 months. HV said there is no reason for her to change to progress if she is satisfied on it.

TheFish · 16/12/2005 17:30

i suggest giving him coes miulk
i did

TheFish · 16/12/2005 17:30

cows

bobbybobbobbingalong · 16/12/2005 17:42

Breastfeed for another couple of months and then give cows milk - it honestly sounds like this would be less hassle.

Roobietherednosedreindeer · 16/12/2005 17:54

Ds is 8 months and I have stopped physically bfing him as his 7 teeth were ripping my nips to shreds and it was getting beyond a joke. I express in the morning and evening instead and hence he gets around 18oz of EBM a day which I am happy about (I can get 9oz at each session). It really is no hassle and I plan to keep this up for as long as possible and then just use cows milk. Could this be a way forward for you?

sazhig · 16/12/2005 18:38

Different teat? - Maybe the one you are using is too fast for him?

NotQuiteCockney · 16/12/2005 18:58

Whatever you decide to do, at 8 months, you can move him to a sippy cup instead. Better for the teeth, and a bottle is just another thing you'll have to wean him off in the long run.

qsack · 26/12/2005 13:03

hi
thanks for all your advice, since my last message i continued to try apitmel and he didn't like it. tried every teat, spout, cup i had in the house and still no good! yesterday while at the table for big family christmas lunch i gave him cows milk ... and he drank it, no fuss!

so now i'm stressing about whether it's too early for him to be put straight onto cows milk. what's not in it that's in formula?

i'm guessing iron and all sorts of other good stuff for babies while they're developing so fast?? i could carry on BF for a bit longer if it's too early for cows milk but i'm training for the london marathon (april 06) and want to increase my training, it's so exhausting anyway that i want to cut out BF so i'm not worried about not having enough milk because i'm training a lot (not to mention having to wear two bras when i run!)

does he take expressed milk? (i.e. do you know if its the bottle or the milk he's objecting to?)

SenoraPartridgeinaPearTree · 26/12/2005 14:26

pretty sure that training does not reduce milk supply though, unless you are seriously overdoing it and not eating enough.

qsack · 26/12/2005 21:22

i think i'll carry on for another month, try formula again and if he still doesn't like it then go straight onto cows milk as he eats really well. on the bottle or milk objection question i think it's mostly the 'non breast milk' he mostly objects too but even when it's breast milk he's much less keen than when feeding from me although he will take it.

Thought you might find these links useful re training & bf:
Marathon Mama
Breatfeeding.com
Kellymom - Exercise & Breatfeeding

FYI - Yes were right that cows milk is not recommended as a main drink before 1 year because it does not contain the right nutrients for babies to develop. If you would still like to supplement it might be worth contacting the bf organisations like LLL, ABM etc & speak to a councillor - they should be able to offer some assistance.

Good luck in the marathon!

qsack · 28/12/2005 12:57

thanks sazhig, will def. look at those links

20 years since when I brought my two kids up it was normal to change to cows milk at 6 months. It honestly did my kids no harm and I can only think that this recent extension is due to later weaning which is now "in fashion". (Yes I know its recommended by the WHO). But if he likes cows milk, give it. Find out what is supposed to be missing from cows milk that is present in formula, then find a way to make it up by diet or by supplement.

mamatotokf · 12/03/2006 21:04

at 8 months and eating well i wouldn't be worried about introducing cows milk as it seems to suit him - it is the iron that's the key thing missing i believe, plus formula is vitamin enriched.

nowanearlyNicemum · 12/03/2006 21:28

dd hated all types of formula too.
I ended up mixing EBM with formula in ever-increasing proportions but over quite a long period of time and it worked a treat for us.

Socci · 12/03/2006 21:43

peaches - how do you know it "didn't do them any harm" Besides - just because something doesn't do any harm doesn't mean it's good.

pootlepod · 12/03/2006 22:00

My dd was similar to this at 9 months when I gave up. After 2 weeks of not really drinking anything, when she drank the cows milk I didn't worry about what it hadn't got in it, was just relieved. She was eating very well and wasn't allergic to it as she had had it on food for a while. I did consider giving vitamin drops to supplement but never got round to it. It seemed a trauma at the time but it's not now- and she's a healthy 2 year old.

hunkermunker · 12/03/2006 22:08

Peaches, later weaning is "in fashion"? How about it's recommended now because research shows it to be the best thing for the baby?
