Please don't say you're all going to be teetotal.

I have been breastfeeding on xmas day twice

I usually express something for the evening

1 glass champagne in the morning

2/3 glasses of wine in the evening (when I give expressed)

Tinker · 14/12/2005 16:15

Oh good. I was planning champagne - 1 glass - in the morning.

2? glasses with meal (but they are biggish glasses )

2 glasses during evening.

But was planning to drink 2 glasses of water for every alcoholic one?

I had a glass of bubbly the other day, and it made me tipsy.

I'm expressing, like Enid. Will probably have a Bailey's and coffee for brekkie, wine w/lunch, and a sherry afterwards.

RacersTheRedNosedReindeer · 14/12/2005 16:17

Last bf of day is 5pm so before that might have a glass of wine (not immediately before!), but afterwards I will have, er... several - as next feed is 6.30am, hopefully!!

She has formula at bedtime but if she didn't, I would just wait until she'd had her last bf before hitting the wine.

tiktok · 14/12/2005 16:18

Tinker - what's the logic of the water???

It won't reduce the alcohol in the breastmilk, unless (of course) you are drinking the water instead of the wine, and reducing it that way.

No one needs to abstain from alcohol at Xmas if they are bf.

See endless discussions on this on mumsnet

Tinker · 14/12/2005 16:19

How long before alchol hits the breastmilk? Mine has now decided that she doesn't sleep.

Not b/feeding anymore but when I was,I drank. Not to excess but I can't recall consciously keeping a lid on it.

Tinker · 14/12/2005 16:20

Hurray. Was hoping you'd see this Tik Tok. Water would replace wine to slow me down.

Aarrgh! Want to drink like a drinker.

Expat, are you expressing to build up a supply for when you return to work???

tiktok · 14/12/2005 16:23

Alcohol gets into the breastmilk pretty much as it gets into the blood - that is, fairly quickly, peaking after about half an hour and then dwindling. Takes about an hour and a half to process a unit (from memory - if it is really, really important, check somewhere else!!)

RacersTheRedNosedReindeer · 14/12/2005 16:23

I understand if it is in your bloodstream it is in your breastmilk. Though that in itself isn't a huge problem when dealing with small amounts, it gives you an idea on how to avoid allowing alcohol to get through. There's something about allowing an hour per unit for the bloodstream to return to pre-drink levels but I could be wrong on all that so apologies if I am!

RacersTheRedNosedReindeer · 14/12/2005 16:24

x post but glad to see I'm remembering along the same lines as tiktok

ISawFrannyandZooeyKissingSanta · 14/12/2005 16:45

I am teetotal, but not because of breastfeeding. Good excuse, though.

expatinscotland · 14/12/2005 16:46

Moon
I'm expressing off the left breast just now b/c Roisin tore a big gash in it, which is scabbed but still raw.

My milk came in yesterday so it's super engorged and quite painful under the arm. But a lot is coming out that I'm just freezing.

When I first exprssed off it, though, I was only getting about 20 ml/15 min. pump session.

The right one still seems to produce more milk, why I don't know?

expatinscotland · 14/12/2005 16:56

does brandy butter count? cuz mine is boozy.

Blondeinlondon · 14/12/2005 17:42

I will be having a couple of glasses - hopefully not enough to get a hangover

sazhig · 14/12/2005 20:27

One or two small glasses only probably - I've found alcohol reduces my supply and makes ds very irritable but don't want to miss out on the fab vino my dad is bringing & the lovely port we're having with pudding.

popsycalindisguise · 14/12/2005 20:29

According to kellymom.com, very little alcohol gets into milk anyway. And there is no need to pump and dump! I think they say avoid feeding within 2 hours of drinking.

teabagsandwine · 14/12/2005 21:19

as much as I feel like having. It's christmas

christmasdinnyer · 14/12/2005 21:25

whatever I feel like... deffo a few glasses Veuve. yummy.

teabagsandwine · 14/12/2005 21:31

out of interest, how much alcohol do you drink (if at all) in a normal week?

thecattleareALOHing · 14/12/2005 21:33

God no. I can't go without alcohol for two years. I have had half a bottle of white tonight and I know dd will wake up for a feed . It's my only pleasure left (she says, in wheedling voice). And I don't express. DD is a hideous dynamo of energy and advanced physical development. It's a nightmare!

Roobietherednosedreindeer · 14/12/2005 21:36

I will be drinking without any regard to whether I am bfing or not (always do!)
