Have a read of this , especially some of the comments at the end..

CliffRichardSucksEggsinHell · 22/11/2005 16:13

Don't want to read anymore thanks, makes me want to punch someone!

starlover · 22/11/2005 16:18

i would say that the comments are pretty even... for and against

i think the point some people miss though is that people DO get offended by it, especially those of a certain age.
Yes it is natural, and no a woman shouldn't have to do it in a public loo... but you have to accept that some people are offended by it... why don't their feelings matter?

CliffRichardSucksEggsinHell · 22/11/2005 16:18

Just added a comment, couldn't help myself!

CarolinaMoon · 22/11/2005 16:19

ROFL, are they for real?? esp Robert from Swindon - "my mother had 7 of us but never found the need to feed us in the high st. Shows how little time the modern mother spends at home if feeding a child cannot be done there"

CliffRichardSucksEggsinHell · 22/11/2005 16:20

They're not offended when they buy a Newspaper and see tits staring at them though are they? But when a woman uses them for what they were designed for, suddenly they are all offended! I'm offended when I see fat kids stuffing beefburgers into their mouths on the High Street, but I don't see them being asked to move somewhere private!

starlover · 22/11/2005 16:23

but it's not the same people! the ones who buy mags of naked women aren't the same ones offended by seeing someone bf

i don't think you can say anyone in this case is right or wrong... but i can understand that it does make some people uncomfortable.
i have breastfed whilst out... but i preferred to do it in a feeding area in mothercare or in our mall rather than out in the open.
that is my personal preference, but i would rather not embarrass other people and i would rather not show them my boobs either! lol

CliffRichardSucksEggsinHell · 22/11/2005 16:23

Typical for the Daily Mail!

hunkermunker · 22/11/2005 16:25

Because they're mentalists, SL.

CliffRichardSucksEggsinHell · 22/11/2005 16:26

Some people, Starlover, have nowhere else to go, not every town is considerate enough to provide breast-feeding facilities. And in my experience, you really cannot see even a hint of a boob unless you are staring very closely, it just looks like you are giving the baby a hug. I breastfed mine on telly and I challenge anyone to find even a hint of flesh!

And I'm sorry to say that yes, those people who leer over tits in the papers are the same ones who are offended by b/f. Besides, it's kinda hard now to avoid seeing tits everywhere you go, through tight fitting clothes on women, front pages of newspapers, etc, so they don't mind that kind of exposure!

starlover · 22/11/2005 16:27

why can't anyone accept that some people don't think the same as you? some people ARE offended by seeing breastfeeding...
you can't change that just by saying "oh it's natural" etc etc etc

why do their feelings not matter? why is their opinion inherently "wrong"?

hunkermunker · 22/11/2005 16:28

I can accept that people don't think the same as me. But I don't have to agree with them or think their opinions or feelings matter a damn. OK?

hunkermunker · 22/11/2005 16:29

There are people who are offended by the sight of pregnant women, SL. Should I hide in a cupboard? It's pandering to ignorant mentalism. See?

CliffRichardSucksEggsinHell · 22/11/2005 16:29

The article was about a mother being told to move by a PC. Now as I said, lots of things offend me but I don't go about enforcing my opinions on everyone. Whereas breastfeeding mothers actually do get verbal attacks. Therefore it is not merely opinions we are talking about, it is facism!

starlover · 22/11/2005 16:32

i am offended by people taking a shit... does that mean they should do it in front of me?

i'm not saying that complaints to the police are justified, or telling people they can;'t breastfeed in public... just that it is wrong to automatically assume the worst of everyone who dislikes bf in public!

a lot of older people don't like it because it embarrasses them.. because it just wasn't done in their day. they can't help that can they/

expatinscotland · 22/11/2005 16:34

It's now illegal in Scotland to interfere w/a mother who is breastfeeding.

I really don't get it - there doesn't seem to be a problem allowing people to be disgustingly, publicly drunk in this country, vomitting all over the street, urinating in public, fighting, etc. But breastfeeding is seen as offensive?

hunkermunker · 22/11/2005 16:37

So breastfeeding's the same as shitting? Nice. Classy comparison, SL.

HRHQoQ · 22/11/2005 16:38

Starlover - did you read those comments - so of those SUPPORTING the woman were from older people!

Lizzylou · 22/11/2005 16:39

My MIL and FIl were fairly embarrassed that I breastfed and that made me feel uncomfortable, all that making sure I was covered up etc (I never got the hang of dignified feeding and always seemed to have 1/2 my breats hanging out!) so I went into another room, that said it was good to get a break from overbearing MIL anyway. This time round I will be more confident and they can move!
Funny, but I had no such compunction breastfeeding in public places and managed to do so in some surprising places.
I think Starlover is right tho, the older generation do find it odd to see mothers breastfeeding but wouldn't raise an eyebrow at a mother feeding her baby a bottle and if a baby is hungry then it needs feeding!

starlover · 22/11/2005 16:39

ooh way to go taking it completely the wrong way hunkermunker!

did i say iyt's the same thing? no

i said it offends me. and according to your description, being offended is mentalism. so people should do it in front of me to stop me being offended.

if we're going down that road then Cliff has likened it to porn!

hunkermunker · 22/11/2005 16:41

I didn't say that being offended by anything was mentalism, SL.

Tatties · 22/11/2005 16:42

One of the comments is from a 70 yr old who says BF is natural, should take place anywhere and she remembers public BF taking place in the 1940s without it causing any offence.
Do you think the people who are offended by public BF have ever actually seen it happening? Do you think they would necessarily always know that's what is happening (as opposed to giving baby a cuddle)? Or do you think they might just be offended by the idea of it, perhaps assuming that there would be a lot of flesh on show?

Because they're mentalists, SL.

that was in reply to my post pointing out that some people find it offensive/embarassing

starlover · 22/11/2005 16:43

so... it's only mentalism if YOU say so?

expatinscotland · 22/11/2005 16:44

I'm eternally amazed by the level of chauvinism and sexism still prevalent in British society. I truly am.

Lizzylou · 22/11/2005 16:45

Tatties that is a good point, most criticism I think comes from ignorance and a general embarrassment. My IL's generation are the ones who were told that the new formulas were best so they are just unused to breastfeeding beyond the first week.
