Got the new ABM magazine this morning.
On the backpage is an advert for a website run by Lisa Cole.
Some classics were...

'I'm a tit man'

'I like milk form my mum,not just any old cow.'

Address is www.lactivist.co.uk

(No connection to me by the way-just like the lady's style!!)

Have been here for ages trying to figure out what DCUK stands for! I'm looking for too much detail, right?

highlander · 16/11/2005 11:47

As a mum still BF (DS is 14mo), I hate these 'in your face' lactivists. I think it puts people off BF. I am appalled by women who choose not to BF, but once the decision is made....each to their own.

Horrible, horrible, horrible.

Would find this truly offensive if had tried hard to BF and failed.

Elitist lactivists don't help the cause IMO.

chipmonkey, its a witty take-off of the famous french connection slogan!

I know that, now, Nightynight, but before I saw the picture. I thought it must mean "diet correct UK" or something like that!

PMSL Enid!

Howabout the CBeebies logo with a line through it......

I think there is something to be said for these, as I think breastfeeding older children is largely a hidden phenomenon. I don't think most people understand that it is ok or even possible for toddlers to still have breastmilk. People have made the most bizarre comments to me when they find out ds is still breastfed. I think these t-shirts raise awareness in a light-hearted way. If people had more idea how many toddlers do still breastfeed, they might not be so gobsmacked / ignorant / plain insulting about it.

Plus, it is something to be proud of, but not something that often gets any recognition. If a t-shirt helps you feel good about what you are doing - why not?

I am probably barking up the wrong tree but I almost see it as comparable to wearing a Gay Pride badge, or a "Black is Beautiful" t-shirt. Yes I know breastfeeding is a choice, but do you see what I mean? I will probably get jumped on from a huge height for this, but people who breastfeed toddlers are a (mostly) negatively perceived minority, and do encounter prejudice. If people want to use these sort of slogans (I mean the positive ones, not the ones that slag off formula), I think good luck to them. It doesn't harm anyone.

It's not comparable to wearing a Gay Pride badge, or a "Black is Beautiful" t-shirt though because neither of those things are a choice, they just "are". It is comparable to wearing an "I'm more ??? than you" T shirt. People can wear what they like but they're not for me and I would actually think a little less of the person for feeling they need to brag about something. "bragging" to friends etc is, of course, perfectly acceptable though.

frannyandzooey · 16/11/2005 14:23

Yes, I said I knew breastfeeding was a choice. I don't see it as bragging, but instead saying that you are not ashamed of something that, mostly, you are made to feel is shameful. Standing up for oneself is not bragging, IMO.

I think people are missing the point that people who breastfeed older children are subject to a lot of prejudice. I think these t-shirts are an attempt to combat prejudice in a humourous way.

EWww!
I don't mind the litle terror type T.shirts but those ones are awful and cringeworthy!

I think it's incredibly sad that we can't be proud about things in Britain without been seen as smug, but they just are smug and who gives a toss anyway? Who is the message aimed at?

Twiglett · 16/11/2005 14:31

OMG .. not read thread yet .. but WHY???

makes me wanna puke

sorry I don't get this thing about not wanting your children wearing something with a bottle on it.

Did/do none of you breastfeeders ever express milk and give it to them from a bottle?????

frannyandzooey · 16/11/2005 14:33

Right, I am off out, better go and change into my "I just know your child had Alphabites for lunch" t-shirt, as I have spilt lentil soup down my "My norks are droopier than yours" one.

chipmonkey · 16/11/2005 14:35

Actually, think I might get a tee-shirt saying I'm in the 40% tax bracket!
