We're giving dd2 a bottle of ebm per day to keep her in the swing of accepting a bottle when it is needed.

She's 7 weeks and we've been doing it for 4 weeks. The process is semi-successful. She'll accept the teat in her mouth and will swallow some milk but she has only drunk the milk properly on a handful of occasions. Usually she 'accepts' about an ounce of milk over the course of 30 minutes!

Could a different teat be more successful? We're currently using a tommee Tippee variflow teat (the one without the nuby bumps)

What do you use?

Who gives the bottle - you or someone else? And if it's someone else, are you in the room at the same time?

I only ask because dd would only ever accept EBM in a bottle from dh, never from me. If I tried to give it to her, or if I was in the same room, she wouldn't have it - she wanted the real thing, and if she could see or smell it, she wouldn't take the bottle. If I was out she'd take the EBM quite happily.

DelGirl · 09/11/2005 11:01

I use the avent ones. It did take dd a few times to get used to it as she was only having the occasional bottle at 1st. But after a few weeks she was fine and she now loves her bedtime bottle.

oliveoil · 09/11/2005 11:01

I used the NUK range of bottles for both dd1 and dd2.

Dd1 refused a bottle until she was about 6 months and dd2 was about 4 months (I think) but they both got there in the end.

Try to feed when they are not too hungry. I found they would look at me in absolute fury as if to say 'what on earth is this?' when I tried a bottle if they were ravenous.

Racers · 09/11/2005 11:02

Did same with my DD from 4-10 weeks, at which point she refused the bottle. I gave up trying a bit but then decided to try again with a Nuk bottle and she accepted this after a few goes and now loves her night time bottle. I tried her with her old bottle (Avent) since but she wasn't as keen and I don't blame her as the teat is rather big and not as soft as the Nuk one. I haven't tried the Tommee Tippee so I don't know if the Nuk is better or not, but it definately made a difference for us. HTH?!!

PickasillyChristmasName · 09/11/2005 11:04

When DS had milk from bottles, he hated the avent ones. He liked the Mothercare thin necked bottles with variable orthondontic teats (they look a bit as if they have been trodden on ).

Have got the same for DD, but haven't tried her with a bottle yet .

PickasillyChristmasName · 09/11/2005 11:04

Whoops, was just trying out my Christmas name early, it is PiccadillyCircus really .

beatie · 09/11/2005 11:05

NUK bottles are narrow necked and the teats are brown and sloping in shape. Am I right? I may try one of those.

DH gives her the milk. I try to stay out of the way and sometimes I am out completely.

No, wide necked and clear teats! They have them in Asda and they are about £3 . Can get several different teats, small and medium teats and different flow.

Racers · 09/11/2005 11:09

Not sure what is meant my narrow-necked or otherwise, sorry, but they are slimmer than the 8oz avent, yes. My teats , er.. my bottles' teats, are not brown LOL! Sorry, ahem, on with the post... They have a slopey bit yes. I got mine from Boots. A few quid spent, as had already got the full Avent range, but well worth it as she is happy and it really does seem like quite a soft teat.

beatie · 09/11/2005 11:09

What sort of flow does a breastfed baby prefer? I have a strong letdown reflex so I am thinking that dd2 doesn't have to work too hard to get her milk from me.

hi ya everyone first time on here so sorry for not using correct lingo etc i def agree with wigwambam dd would not accept bottle from me to begin with but after few weeks she now takes bottle me or anyone really using standard advent ones *

Racers · 09/11/2005 11:12

My DD is 5 months and has the medium flow I think. I think my letdown is fairly fast too.

Racers · 09/11/2005 11:15

Also tried all the tricks in the book - wore DH's jumper to mask my own smell etc. Seemed most sucessful in evening, DH feeding, me well out of sight. Once she got the hang of it (again, after refusing), she'll happily let me feed her.

Tallbird · 09/11/2005 12:04

For us, the MAM ultivent teats worked well (having tried both Avent and NUK). They are a bit difficult to get hold of around us - but Babies'R Us sell them online. dd is now 9 weeks and has been having a mixture of breast, ebm and formula since about 2 weeks. Initially, she wouldn't take that much from the bottle, and it would take ages for her to drink it - but getting better over time.

popsycal · 09/11/2005 12:06

MAM ultivent

kateandfelicity · 09/11/2005 12:47

Yeah, the NUK brand was by far the best for dd, I bf her exclusively for 3 months and then had the biggest battle to get her onto a bottle... she refused Avent ones... but NUK ones she likes because they;re nice and soft...

suzi2 · 09/11/2005 16:57

We use the tommee tippee ones. Just moved up from slow to medium flow now DS is 3 months. We tried the variflow, but he really couldn't get to grips with it. Whereas with a standard teat, he takes 6oz in 10 mins easy. I could post you a tommee tippee slow flow for you to try if you fancy - would save buying if it doesn't work for you. We don't use the slow flow much and I have loads.

bundle · 09/11/2005 17:00

we used playtex teats, they are sucked into the mouth much more like the action of bfeeding apparently

welshmum · 09/11/2005 19:14

I wrapped the Nuk bottle we use in my dressing gown and I think the smell prompted the sucking action in ds - then he went for it and it's been fine since. He's 5 and a half months....

rodeo1 · 09/11/2005 20:12

I'd say go for the NUK ones, they do have the beige latex teats or the silicone clear ones. I BF dd (1 month) but dp gives her her first night feed with one. I got mine from Boots, but Asda sell them too

northender · 09/11/2005 20:18

We used the TT ones with the bumps and still use them

beatie · 10/11/2005 10:25

Suzi2 - What a kind offer. We have a variety of TT teats though so I think we've tried the non vsari-flow too.

No bother. I hope you find something that works soon. One other tip I would have is try and get baby to latch onto the bottle like they would your boob - teat pointing towards roof of mouth etc. My DH used to struggle as he'd just stick the bottle in and DS couldn't really work it out. When he 'latched' onto it, he got the hang of it.

chipmonkey · 12/11/2005 00:00

I could write a book on this, beatie!
ds3 was in SCBU and was tube-fed EBM then bottlefed EBM, and then took it directly from source! After we got home he was mainly breastfed but occasionally bottlefed, again EBM, from Avent bottles.
At 12 weeks corrected he started refusing bottles, very surprising considering that he had encountered bottles before he encountered breasts!
We tried EVERY teat we could find. We even tried the breastbottle He screamed when he saw it coming!
Eventually we tried starving him onto it. And I just mean not breastfeeding for 4 hours, so he was really hungry. I then tried him with the MAM ultivent teat. Success! He drank 90ml
However when he went on solids, he refused those. So now eventually, he takes the Playtex naturalLatch teat in the Latex form. Oddly enough, whenthe teats have just been washed and there are two of them sitting together on the draining board, they do look like a little pair of boobs, so maybe thats why he accepts them!

matnanplus · 12/11/2005 19:45

As a maternity nanny i have had brill success with the MAM Ultivent teat and poor success with avent as teat hard and the latch is incomplete so that air gets in.

The MAM teat is available at boots and toys r us, they fit avent, boots and most wide neck bottles.

The wide neck silicon teats and the standard silicon or latex nuk teats are good also.
