I was told this yesterday, please tell me it isn't true? :(

It's not true at all. Unless of course it is out of your body and sitting in the fridge for 6 months!

Indith · 01/04/2011 09:13

Who on earth told you that? Whoever it is needs beating about the head. Of course your milk doesn't go yuk. You milk will continue to be wonderful and fresh and full of everything your child needs for as long as you continue to feed be it 6 months or 6 years!

suso · 01/04/2011 09:15

Jeez, who told you that BS? Please go back and slap the person in the name of all breastfeeding mothers.

llareggub · 01/04/2011 09:16

My 2 year old doesn't think so.

RJandA · 01/04/2011 09:19

"your milk goes yuk".... please tell me this wasn't a HV!!

Their very technical language should tip you off that whoever they are, they are not a breastfeeding expert

Snuppeline · 01/04/2011 09:19

I bf my dd until she was 15 months and no yukkynes!

wolfhound · 01/04/2011 09:20

rubbish! fed my 2 for 12-13 months each, and no sign of yuk. And DS1 is a very very fussy eater, so I'm sure he'd have let me know!

RitaMorgan · 01/04/2011 09:26

Yes it's a true fact. After 6 months it turns to diesel. This is why breastfed babies are so unhealthy.

MummyBerryJuice · 01/04/2011 09:30

Nobody told my 15 month old that

Bucharest · 01/04/2011 09:31

You're not in Italy are you?

That's what my paediatrician told me when dd got to 6 mths.

Dd didn't hear her fortunately and carried on for another 5 years. Grin

HettyAmaretti · 01/04/2011 09:32

Utter tosh.

Pingpong · 01/04/2011 09:32

How odd?

Inertia · 01/04/2011 09:38

Complete and utter nonsense.

jaggythistle · 01/04/2011 09:39

Definitely no complaints form my 18 month old either Hmm

tiktok · 01/04/2011 09:39

No....not diesel, it turns to washing up water. Somehow or other the body knows when your baby is aged six months, and instantly changes the composition of the milk. All the nutrition goes out of it, and it becomes just as you were told, 'yuk'. Amazing, isn't it?

It is April 1 today - are you winding us up?!

RightUpMyRue · 01/04/2011 09:40

According to one breastfed 3 year old it tastes like melted ice cream. Doesn't sound yuk to me Smile

MoonFaceMamaaaaargh · 01/04/2011 10:04

at 14m ds can't yet verbaly tell me he still likes my milk.

So i have carried out my own investigation and can report that it still tastes as sweet as ever. Blush Grin

jaggythistle · 01/04/2011 10:09

I am such a chicken and have never tasted mine Blush

thumbwitch · 01/04/2011 10:10

Must be an April Fool - sounds like it came out of the mouth of a 13yo.
Of course it doesn't go "yuk" or anything else after 6m. Mad. The composition changes according to your baby's changing needs - but it does not go yuk, nor is it useless at that point.
DS also carried on for some time after 6m - until he was 23mo.

Yuk indeed. Hmm

EauRouge · 01/04/2011 10:21

No complaints from my 2.6 yo, she wouldn't ask for it all day ever day if it was yuck! Grin

spidookly · 01/04/2011 10:25

If this were true you'd be able to tell by your baby's reaction.

As long as he or she likes it, it's not "yuk".

nomoremagnolia · 01/04/2011 17:48

Not an April fool I'm afraid, was told this yesterday by a friend when we were discussing weaning. She has an older child as well as a baby the same age as mine (5mo) and she said she was stopping BFing at 6 mo as the milk goes yuk (her words). I want to carry on BFing as long as possible and as she has an older child I thought maybe there was some truth in it. I can believe that the milk would change as your baby's nutritional needs change with weaning but I didn't think it would go 'off'. I really thought it sounded wrong and wanted to challenge it but then MIL told me being stressed would make my milk go sour and hearing something similar again made me wonder.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 01/04/2011 17:52

Eh?

tiktok · 01/04/2011 17:55

Of course your milk will not go sour if you are stressed!!!!

Silly MIL :)

In fact, breastfeeding helps you produce soothing opioids which destress you. They are also in the milk as well.

Nature knows we get stressed. It doesn't punish our babies for it.

Sheesh.

FairyLightsForever · 01/04/2011 18:08

Not only does it not go 'yuck' it actually starts to contain more antibodies to counteract babies starting to crawl and get more grubby.
I am still feeding my 4year old DD, she has had 2 stomach upsets in the entire of her life, she rarely gets ill and when she does it doesn't last very long.

Feed for as long as suits you and your baby and don't worry about the nonsense that some people come out with!
