Baby Bjorn original or Connecta carrier?

OP posts:
SantaIsMyLoveSlave · 18/12/2010 23:59

Of those, Connecta. It will be far more comfortable to wear for anything more than short periods.

MoonUnitAlpha · 19/12/2010 07:39

Choose a carrier where the baby is in a seated position with their knees level with or higher than their hips - kind of like froggy legs. Avoid any where they are supported on their crotch and their legs dangle.

lillylane · 19/12/2010 07:46

Agree with what the others have said. I don't like the look of the Bjorns, they seem uncomfortable. I have a Beco and love it but am looking at getting a connecta(solarweave) too. There is a whole forum for Slings here www.mumsnet.com/Talk/slings_and_backpacks_chat if you are looking for more info.

SeaShellsFiringUpTheQuattro · 19/12/2010 07:56

The classic baby Bjørn is THE most uncomfortable sling I've worn.
The sports version with a fuller back is better but the lack of hip belt means all the weight is carried through your shoulders which is
Agony for any lenght of time or anything other than a new born.

I love my connecta but it is fairly open at the top so a newborn's head does not have much support...so better for slightly older. They are very funky though and I get comments when using with my toddler :)

The sling forum is good for a read!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 19/12/2010 08:32

Connecta! But there are loads of other options. Get thee to www.naturalmamas.co.uk there's loads of really good advice over there.

ConcreteElephant · 19/12/2010 11:24

I've answered on your other thread but I see that MoonUnitAlpha has also made the point here about Baby Bjorns' positioning of baby being far from ideal, with the weight on the crotch.

I see so many people using them that I thought I might have imagined reading that, and I wonder why it isn't more widely known? Surely people wouldn't buy them if they knew they weren't supporting their babies properly?

VeronicaCake · 19/12/2010 11:33

I'd vote for the Connecta too, I love mine. Get the one with the sleephood if your baby is still tiny, that way you can have a snack whilst they sleep and not worry about dropping food on them (it was embarrassing that DD's clothes were covered in ketchup stains for the first few weeks of her life!).

MoonUnitAlpha · 19/12/2010 11:36

I think it just isn't very well known ConcreteElephant - Babybjorn has responded to criticism of the carrying position though and I believe their new style carriers support the baby's pelvis in a sitting position rather than dangling.

ConcreteElephant · 19/12/2010 11:56

That's really good to know MoonUnitAlpha - perhaps they might embark on a marketing drive to tell people that as I certainly would have merrily carried on thinking their product wasn't a good choice and word of mouth can be a powerful recommendation can't it? I would always advise checking the seating position and would have mentioned them as a bad example.

MoonUnitAlpha · 19/12/2010 12:01

Actually I've just had a look on their website and the photos all look quite dangly still - can't remember where I heard the style had changed!

ConcreteElephant · 19/12/2010 12:17

Hmmm - perhaps I'll still advise caution then... I'm making it sound like I'm a professional sling recommender but really I just used to get a lot of people asking me about our wilkinet and we'd get talking...with the Connecta I'm practically throwing myself at people to get them to try it.

I think that Baby Bjorns look uncomfortable for the wearer and that seems to be borne out by people's experiences here - plus, not that pretty

I'm feeling very Christmassy in my bright red Connecta at the moment Smile

FairyTaleOfNewYork · 19/12/2010 12:18

bb do have a new carrier out but it still quite dangly.

i would personally go for the connecta. or a nice woven wrap.

MoonUnitAlpha · 19/12/2010 13:57

The Wilkinet is much nicer for the baby than the BabyBjorn but I still found it quite uncomfortable for me, especially after long periods (plus tying all the straps was a pain). I have a stretchy Close carrier that I can wear all day though - the weight seems to be better distributed and I don't feel it in my shoulders.

ConcreteElephant · 19/12/2010 14:05

Agree totally re the straps - complete pain, especially now DD is bigger and the ground is wet/snowy - hence the Connecta now!

DH is still a big fan of the Wilkinet but he's really tall and obviously stronger than me.

Dozeyland · 19/12/2010 20:48

My Baby Bjorn is being delivered now off Amazon - gutted! will send it back and order myself a Connecta Carrier....

not sure to go with the "safe bet" black or a funky one. maybe red?

Im being dumb in asking this... but i am wary about the way babies legs/hips look in a carrier. (the frog-like) is this ok???

im so annoyed ive ordered a BB now :(

monkeycat · 19/12/2010 20:56

I love my connect a ! I have carried DD2 in it every day for the last 18 months and it has been great .

Choose a funky design because it is plain black on the other side and is reversible so you can use either side depending on your mood ( or dH's preference).

You will not regret getting a connecta . I would also reccomend buying from the connect a website then you are dealing direct with the lady that makes them and she is very helpful is you have questions re. sleep hoods etc.

FairyTaleOfNewYork · 19/12/2010 20:57

slingguide has some good information about position of babys legs in these carriers, with a link at the bottom with further information.

i find that a good sling will hold the babies hips in a better postion than BB, as their legs then tend to 'hug' you iyswim.

MoonUnitAlpha · 19/12/2010 21:03

Frog like is the best position for their legs/hips Dozeyland, although it wouldn't be comfortable for an adult! When babies have hip problems they are even put in a harness that keeps them in that froggy position all the time.

You want the baby to be in a seated position so the weight is on their bums not crotches.

SmacSmackedSanta · 19/12/2010 21:05

Baby bjorn are so popular as they are sold in most of the main stream shops like Mothercare and John Lewis. If you want a sling you have to look a bit harder..... and work out which one you want.
A lot of people follow the crowd Wink
I had a Tomy carrier for DD1 on loan from a friend. I bought one on ebay for DD2 and she was a whopper. It quickly became an instrument of torture for both of us.
I bought a Yamo (soft structured carrier) when she was 4 months old and love it. I use it everyday when we go dog walking. It has a lovely padded waistband as well and DD2 is heavy but with a sling you can pull them in nice and close and they don't feel nearly as heavy if they are well supported.
I looked at a connecta but hired the Yamo to try out and decided to keep it.

Dozeyland · 19/12/2010 21:13

Thanks monkey cat - think i will choose a design now!

Hope amazon take the BB back! and i get my refund soon as i want to get my connecta!! be handy in this snow!!!

Wow its reversible - thats fab :)

ok so my nearly 8week old DD will be fine in it then? what age do i do the frog leg until?

h ican't wait to get one now :)

Dozeyland · 19/12/2010 21:13

Thanks moon - makes more sense now!

OP posts:
FairyTaleOfNewYork · 19/12/2010 21:15

not a connecta, but shows a good knee pit to knee pit spread

dd4 in our connecta she was about 6months old.

Dozeyland · 19/12/2010 21:15

How long can a baby be in the carrier for at a time?

OP posts:
FairyTaleOfNewYork · 19/12/2010 21:16

you can also cinch in the seat base with the connecta chest strap to make the base smaller for a younger baby. just make sure the fabric goes from knee to knee

FairyTaleOfNewYork · 19/12/2010 21:16

baby can be in for as long as you both feel comfortable. i have been known to have dd4 in a carrier for whole days out when she was younger, just getting out for meals, nappy changes etc.
