i get very travel sick as i have a damage to my inner ear. am going to be going on a journey next week & really would like to take something as have a fear of vomiting. i have asked my local pharmacist & they weren't very helpful, just advised me to see my gp. my gp though i know from previous experience is reluctant to prescribe/advise anything while bf. any ideas??

roundabout - What meds have you used before?

I looked up http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/search/f?./temp/~AlU8jf:1 Promethazine and Scolpamine/Hyoscine on Lact-Med (apparently they're commonly used and available from pharmacy travel sickness meds). It seems that the main concern is long term use and the possible effect on pro-lactin levels.

Domperidone is a travel sickness med that is sometimes prescribed (off-license) to increase supply. If your supply tends to be a bit low, then it might be best to try that one, rather than the ones TruthSweet mentions?

Domperidone is mentioned (as a Galactogogue) here. I can't see a factsheet on antinauseants or travel meds, I'm afraid.

The safety of meds while breastfeeding is related to the age of the baby, how old is yours?

I get bad travel sickness also from damage to my inner ear.

I would go to the gp if I was you, even if you don't really want to.

I used to travel for my job (extensively) and had mega sickness drugs lined up which I took copiously then found out I had accidentally fallen pregnant and spent 9 months thinking I would give birth to some drug addled mutant.

So ask the gp, then you will be reassured. From memory, most strong ones are in the category where they don't know if they cause harm.

NQC - Good thinking! I'd forgotten dom. and as it can increase milk supply I'd def. choose that over something that could knock your supply for 6.

Thank you - Domperidone sounds a good option. I will be ringing the gp on monday& hoping he will be more helpful this time. My baby is almost 5 months. I did pop into a different chemist today who was so helpful. She said Quells would be ok but personally she couln't recommend it i needed to check with the gp - she said the amount going into the milk would be minimal. The meds I took before were sturgeron & I took it with stemetil which relieves some of the dizzy symptoms. I ocassionally take stemetil now but alone don't find it much help with the nausea from travelling.

My Doctor was happy for me to take Boots Travel Calm Tablets which have the active ingredient of Hyoscine Hydrobromide whilst I was breastfeeding. Worked really well for me on a 8 hour flight.

thanks everyone, i saw my gp who was nice but unhelpful. just kept saying he couldn't recomend anything & the only long term option was to stop bfeeding! in the end i took kwells - that have the hyoscine in, only needed them for one dose. i just find it so frustrating that they err so much on the side of caution.

Sorry your DR was so unhelpful. I guess he just felt out of his depth. You could recommend he looks at Dr Thomas Hale's Medications and Mothers' Milk in future as it's the leading medical resource on what nursing mothers can take (basically it's a meta-analysis of all research on each drug to give the most thorough answer going).
