misdee · 21/07/2010 14:25

dd4 has a cows milk protein allergy, so have been carrying on breastfeeding until now.

but i am 16 weeks pregnant, and feel very sore when feeding dd4. so am giving up.

but dd4 is not happy at all. full on tantrums.

i am replacing her breatsmilk with wysoy, but she wont take it.

we have tried alprosoy, oatmilk, and nutrimigen as well.

Can she tolerate goat's milk?

hobbgoblin · 21/07/2010 17:03

What are you giving it to her in btw.?

misdee · 21/07/2010 17:07

no, she cant have goats milk. we have been told to avoid all animal milks.

i have tried beakers and bottles.

but all she wants is boo-boo

but am so sore, i cant bear anything touching them atm, even clothing makes me wince.

Sorry, no tips. have been unsuccesful with weaning and am still waiting.....

But congratulations on your pregnancy!

My ds1 is intolerant to cows milk and loves rice milk. He says that it tastes like breastmilk.

but of course, it's not about the milk really. Do you think the sore nips will pass?

misdee · 21/07/2010 18:06

rice milki isnt advised for under 5's sadly.

the nipples have been getting worse over the last few weeks, and i am dreading each feed now.

OP posts:
misdee · 21/07/2010 20:18

she is awake and unhappy

Will she have yoghurt and cooked things containing soy or oatmilk?

misdee · 21/07/2010 20:28

she cant have any cows milk based products inc yoghurt.

can sometimes get her to eat a soya dessert, but thats hit and miss. tried adding it to her readybrek but she refused to eat it. she will finish off her readybrek made with water in one hit usually.

we have started giving her more calcium rich based foods on advice of her dietician as she wasnt getting enough sadly.

MoonUnitAlpha · 21/07/2010 20:33

I meant soy yoghurt rather than cows milk.

misdee · 21/07/2010 20:33

sorry, been a long day we have tried them, but again wont touch them.

It's hard when they can't have cows' milk isn't it!! My ds1 didn't like soy, the thing with the arsenic in rice milk was a worry, I couldn't find the fortified oat milk and then my breastmilk dried up during pregnancy....

He was prescribed a calcium supplement but he wouldn't take it. Absolutely point blank refused and could taste the tiniest amount in any food/drink that I tried to hide it in. So I reckoned the rice milk, although ideal, was the best way to go.

Doesn't help you with your sore nips though! Is expressing an option, or would that hurt too?

mawbroon · 21/07/2010 20:37

I mean the rice milk, although NOT ideal....

Hi Misdee

How about not even bother trying to trade breastmilk for another type of milk?

You can't fool them, and at their age it's not always about the milk and the feeling of a full tummy, but more about the comfort.

Find out what non-dairy foods are high in calcium and add/increase those in her diet.

WRT the comfort side (which is probably what she is missing), distraction often works. Rope in dh and the dd's with the distraction as it can be hard and emotionally draining constantly being the one saying no.

If a breastfeed was part of the nap/bedtime routine, replace it with a song and a story.

Who puts her to bed? I used to, but when I stopped feeding (a couple of months ago) dh started to do the bedtime routine. I think that helped as ds doesn't associate dh with milkies.

Good luck xxx

misdee · 21/07/2010 20:49

i have been distracting during the day, which is fine.

dh has been helping with the bedtime tonight, which has been a lifesaver.

i think for the naps i am going to have to back carry her in a sling, give her her dummy and muzzy and go for a walk. thats my other way of getting her to nap when out and about and cant breastfeed.

we have been increasing calcium rich foods (she loves houmus at lunch time), but i would feel better if she would just take one small beaker of soya milk a day.

will perservere, and keep offering, maybe one day she will give it a try.

she drinks plenty of other fluids during the day, so am not worried she is dehydrated or anything.

Doesn't soya milk taste vile? Would you drink a cup of it? Am saying this as I have never tried it but have listened to what others have said.

Do you think dd needs that one cup of soya milk a day or is it about making you feel better?

If she doesn't need it then don't put pressure and worry on yourself

I am very impressed that you back carry her in a sling!

BalloonSlayer · 21/07/2010 21:06

Why is rice milk not allowed for under 5s?

My now 10 year old DS1 had it from very young - a year IIRC. On a dietitian's recomendation.

I stopped BF him when he was 17.5 months, when I had DD. He was going off it anyway while I was pregnant, the taste must have changed.

I used to also give him Osteocare syrup to augment his calcium.

misdee · 21/07/2010 21:06

i think its because she has such restrictions on her diet (she is allergic to milk eggs and nuts) then i would feel better knowing she is getting just that little bit iyswim?

taken in the last month she loves the sling.

Definetly look at the other forms of calcium. Are you anti sugar - a dietician once suggested nesquick?

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 21/07/2010 21:14

Gorgeous photo

BalloonSlayer · 21/07/2010 21:18

Oooh she has the same allergies as DS1!

  • in fact I am sure I have talked to you about this before.
pixiestix · 21/07/2010 21:20

Ahhh! No helpful advice for you but wanted to say that your DD is gorgeous!

spanxaremyonlyfriend · 21/07/2010 21:22

have you tried chocolate soymilk?

misdee · 21/07/2010 21:38

am def not anti-sugar. will consider adding some choc to it if no luck in a week.

and thank you, i think she is gorgeous as well.

no tips misdee but am going through exactly the same with my 21month old. he too is cows milk intollerant, allergic to eggs and soya. I too am having huge tantrums. not much help but sending weaning vibes.
