Can people please give me advise my ds has been breast feeding for 9 months and loves it. He has always refused bottles screaming while trying to give it. Also started him on a cup which he takes little fliud from. Problem is i have to go back to work 3 days a week from 7 till 20.30. also will have to do night shifts. he is allergic to milk so cheese yoghurts etc are out to increase his intake. Do I leave it for the nursery to sort. He is going to be traumatised from being away from me as we have never been seperated for my than 1 hour. i really dont know whats best. oh he starts nursery in 2 weeks. Any experiences welcome

Does he have to have to have from a bottle? At that age I wouldnt bother and try with a cup.

donnacb · 21/08/2005 09:27

weve been trying from a cup but he doesnt drink that much. he sometime drinks from a straw. and like smoothes. but he drinks maybe 20mls from a cup in a day. so worried about him getting enough milk. he has also got poor weight gain on 2nd centile and wont take the milk free formula weve been given. would prefer to do the cup but wondered if he would miss the sucking action.

What about trying playtex system. You can only order it online or buy from small chemists but it's teat is a strange shape and closely resembles a nipple in the action needed to get milk.

It was recommended to us to use for bf babies and dd would take milk from nothing else.

hercules · 21/08/2005 09:34

here

compo · 21/08/2005 09:35

I would talk to the nursery about it. Also if he starts in 2 weeks can you have settling in periods so he is away from you for more than an hour? Could you leave him with dh/dp or grandparents to get you both used to it?

donnacb · 21/08/2005 09:35

Is that the one shaped like a boob. ive seen them in one of the baby catalogues. have bought so many bottles didnt want to buy another one unless people say it has worked. I think its about £20 is that the right one

OP posts:
hercules · 21/08/2005 09:36

No, it's much cheaper than that. Look at my link. It worked for us.

donnacb · 21/08/2005 09:42

Thanks for the site. It is different to the one ive seen. I do have a settling in period with the nursery. I ve also taken annual leave for the 1st month he is in nursery so i can be around and settle him slowly. unfortunately grandparents r 500miles away and where in the middle of a building site trying to get ds bedroom done so dh been busy trying to that. ds was premie and was born in the middle of converting loft swapping bedroom and bathroom around. we still havent finished. ds doesnt eat well either so doesnt sleep well so we are basically knackered but thats a different thread. he also has reflux bless him and constipation

Don't know if it's one you've already tried, but NUK worked for us. You can get them in bigger Boots and Superdrug. Also mail order from Pharmacy2u

I hope he settles ok. It is surprising sometimes what they will do when your back is turned

donnacb · 21/08/2005 09:51

Have tried the nuk teats as this is what he used in the neonatal unit. I think he knows that we give in within 1hour of trying as i cant stand the screaming. Hes very loud. Voted loudest ever on the unit. Am going on hols for a week with my mum and dad th week b4 he starts. But its my dads 60th and they r wanting a relaxing time so would feel guilty leaving him with them 4 a am if gets upset.

The one shaped like a boob is the Breastbottle. You can get it from Blooming Marvellous or else Google search it. Worked for me.

donnacb · 21/08/2005 13:27

Thanks inthewood how does it work. is it the same suck as breast feeding or still a bottle feeding suck. my dh wonders how ya hold it. he said is it embarrassing to use.

we finally got ds to take a bottle using MAM teats and bottle. nearly spent twenty quid on one that i've forgotten the name of that was on the Baby Whisperer but gald we didn't.

donnacb · 21/08/2005 14:12

It seems that every baby like different teats. it just cost a fortune trying them all and then you have to get them onto a cup argh why cant you take them shopping and let them choose they can go that one please mummy thanks. inmy dreams thanks for everyone help. Maybe the nursery hasmany different bottle to try. We will have to see.

Donnacb - this has been quite well discussed on other threads, and although I have no experience and don't really qualify to comment, I think that the suggestion has been that at 9 months he shouldn't need milk during the days you are working. I guess if he is taking some fluid from a cup he will get the hang of it if you keep going with it and will get enough fluid.

Hayls · 21/08/2005 19:10

My dd started at 11 months and didn't really drink from a cup but she did at nursery. She still didn't at home for a while but I stopped bf at 18mo and she drinks ok now. However, she has never drunk milk- no allergies or anything, just doesn't like it. She drinks plenty of water and eats cheese and yoghurts so I try not to worry too much

chipmonkey · 21/08/2005 19:36

Donnacb, my ds3 has never been very happy taking milk from a bottle. We had some success with the MAM ultivent teat on an Avent bottle but had to starve him into it! He eventually drank from it 4 hours AFTER he was due a feed, very stressful! But then when he went on solids he was no longer starving enough and refused again. He will take it if very thirsty but tbh its not worth the effort. I leave EBM in with the creche and he takes about 1oz after each meal and then in the afternoon they give him EBM mixed with Liga. Dh looks after him on Saturdays and I leave him EBM which he mixes with HIPP organic apple orange and banana cereal. Hipp also do a savoury one, potato and Rosemary which you can mix with EBM. At 9 months I really wouldn't worry. Try to get him to take some fluids other than milk, if he's thirsty enough he'll drink it. No baby will allow themselves to get dehydrated!

donnacb · 21/08/2005 20:39

Thanks everyone its really reassuring hearing fro you guys. but i suppose worrying is all part of being a mum. will post when hes in nursery and let u know how we get on. thanks donna

Sorry haven't been on.
Re breast shaped bottle - it's a bit weird, but thankfully transparent not pink! Not hard for the baby to hold. My dd quite liked manipulating it in her hands. Mimics breast sucking. It's quite funny, I guess, but I didn't care. I used it for a bit, then she took milk from a rubber spouted cup. Not the anywayupcup, she still can't suck that at 11 months. The ordinary soft rubber spout which tips into the mouth with a gentle suck. That's the easiest way to get the milk in her. I'm still breast feeding and at one point I thought someone would look after her frequently but since they don't I haven't needed to use the cups etc that much.
