GMTV debate Should breastfeeding be "allowed" in public?

Grrrrrrrrr!

The law was badly needed in Scotland - there are many areas of Glasgow and the west of scotland where no-one breastfeeds. No-one.

It is not considered a respectable thing for working class people to do - better left to middle class hippies.

Plus the support is patchy - many midwives do not have much experience of it and are concentrating on more important issues - child protection etc

MrsKitty · 15/07/2010 11:25

Jeez, GMTV really need to get some new 'ideas' people on board if this is all they can come up with! This is at least the second time this year they've rolled out one of their negatively phrased 'debates' on BF.

Get Over It GMTV

motherbeyond I think what you saw on telly last night might have been a repeat of a prog (Ch 4 I think) called 'Extreme Breastfeeding' - it was on the Watch channel last night.
Yes, there were some right cretins in it! That bloke with the 'paedofiddlier' comment was commenting on a 'nurse-in' that was organised by a Little Angels bf support group. They were filmed going round various locations, supermarkets, shopping centres etc. and feeding on the go. The comments, from both men and women were just appalling. One man said that he was really offended by the sight of what was a minute bit of skin - yeah, bet you'd cope if there didn't happen to be a baby attached to that boob, mate

missedith01 · 15/07/2010 11:37

They aren't obsessed with BF, they're obsessed with celebs. If DVO said she'd given up pop tarts they'd spend a morning discussing it.

It's commercial TV, it relies on advertising revenue. You can do the future of this drivel real damage by JUST SWITCHING IT OFF!

StealthPolarBear · 15/07/2010 12:05

pmsl at "Brace yourself, hold on, wait for it. It's not all about you. "

Can we get that made into a slogan to promote bfip? T shirt maybe? Oh no, not a T shirt as it wouldn't be "on display" when required. Maybe on a hooter hider??

motherbeyond · 15/07/2010 12:27

species, yes, that was it!! i was agog at the ridiculous comments made..i looked at dh with my mouth hanging open and eyes wide,he just shook his head.
he did however draw the line at watching the rest of the program!
i think he feels there's plenty of awareness in our house as my 8 wek old is constantly attached to me!!

motherbeyond · 15/07/2010 12:37

lol at hooter hider stealth, perhaps some tit tents?!

Shineynewthings · 15/07/2010 12:42

Thanks pookamoo! Definately thinking of going! Mine are 11 and 8 now but I doooo remember the occasions I was forced to use the toilets with deep fondness.....

Jeane · 15/07/2010 12:45

Seriously, are they actually having a debate about this???

GMTV is such a heap of shit.

bluecardi · 15/07/2010 12:50

why does it need to be "allowed" - does putting a baby in a car seat need to be allowed, or using nappies, what about using a babysling? Do people need to 'allow' that as well.

RubyBuckleberry · 15/07/2010 12:55

Dear GMTV,

I can't believe you are actually debating this. My first reaction when I read this thread title was, you are joking, right?

RubyB

Won't ever be watching GMTV and will be going to the BFing Picnic on Monday! Seriously, can't get over this country sometimes!

usually don't have much time for the old US of A but at least they have BFing advert

RubyBuckleberry · 15/07/2010 12:56

s

motherbeyond · 15/07/2010 17:56

i watched that advrt ruby and then clicked on the vid that said "chinese police-woman,breastfeeding hero......watch it it's amazing.what a fantastic woman..and so humble

IsItMeOr · 15/07/2010 20:29

Great advert and that chinese policewoman is inspirational .

catwhiskers10 · 16/07/2010 10:05

It makes me so cross that people accept page 3 photos in family newspapers and women lying topless on holidays abroad but they wont accept a baby being fed in the way nature intended.
I breastfeed my DD but am not confident about feeding in public just because other people make it seem like something to be hidden.
Even if I have to feed while visiting female relatives, they leave the room, which does nothing for my confidence.
Its not as if you can see anything while the baby is feeding!
Grrr!!!

Beveridge · 16/07/2010 10:24

That's a good point catswhiskers. When was the last time GMTV had a 'Should people be allowed to sunbathe topless?' feature?

As humans, we all have nipples so seeing one, however 'indiscreetly' displayed, is not going to come as a huge shock.

IsItMeOr · 16/07/2010 10:30

catwhiskers - it makes me deeply uncomfortable seeing women sunbathing topless, but I had always assumed that was my problem, not theirs. I just don't get why other people don't take the same attitude with BFing and mind their own business .

Sorry SGM, I do take your point that some people choose to use them. I was just trying to think of something that would do instead of a top (as you'd lift that up, ruining the message) and a hooter hider seemed ironic. No offence meant.

Tabitha8 · 16/07/2010 14:18

So we can be stopped from bf in a pub / cafe in England? I didn't know that. Hmm.

littlemissindecisive · 16/07/2010 14:23

I love the way they assume that every mum breastfeeding is intent on flapping their boobs around in the face of the unsuspecting public!!!! It's not flippin page3 its feeding a baby.

The comment "its okay if done discreetly" made my blood boil. I go to lots of toddler groups with lots of bfing mums and have never yet seen anyones boobs.

I'm more worried about my jelly belly hanging out than my boobs

Muppets!

StealthPolarBear · 16/07/2010 14:23

it's not illegal for people to ask

If they do, depending on how they ask it might constitute harrassment but there's no specific law re breasfeeding.

Not sure we can be 'stopped' - they can refuse to serve you maybe but if you don't leave/stop, what would trhey do?

Tabitha8 · 16/07/2010 15:01

That's what I'm wondering. If we refuse to leave, what can they do? For some reason, I thought we had a right to bf, but that obviously isn't true, then?
