Try anything by Sarah Waters, she's brilliant. Also, a guilty pleasure, but really enjoyed the Carrie Diaries - Carrie Bradshaw pre-New York.

I?ve just finished reading Trespass by Rose Tremain and absolutely loved it! But then I am a big fan of most of her stuff? I know it?s not from this year, but ?We need to talk about Kevin? was another really great read! I only read it this year so I?m going to count it in my favourite books of 2010!

If you liked Victoria Hislop's The Island, then you'll love The Faithless Wife by Jo Eames. A similar subject but handled better, I thought. It's a proper page-turner, but a really evocative portrait of Menorca too, both in the present day and during the Spanish Civil War and with a couple of surprising twists. You'll feel like you're in the Med, even if you're in a tent in Devon! Highly recommended.

Did plough all the way through Wolf Hall but it reminded me more and more of a big slice of Dundee cake. Solid, nutritious but DULL!

The girl on the landing

Hi
regarding the post about the ian pears book. Is it Stones Fall you talking about? if so then persevere. Its worth it for the great twist at end.
Loved the larsson trilogy, hated time travellers wife(utter tosh) and have been sadly disapointed by last couple of donna leons.
For anyone looking for easy summer reading then recommend andrea camelleri' inspector montalbano series. murder mysteries but laugh out loud funny.

BelligerentGhoul · 09/08/2010 21:28

I finished 'Stone's Fall' but really wasn't very taken with it - and I saw the twist coming too. I just thought it took a very long time and a lot of meandering around to get to a not very exciting point (rather contrived, non?). Don't think I'll bother with any more of his.

I can't believe there has only been one vote for One Day - it's the best book I've read in years, never mind 2010. I gobbled it up like a greedy pig and then my DH read it and loved it too - and he never loves anything.

I only got a third of the way through Wolf Hall before I bailed out in favour of something lightweight- I really liked it but somehow it was like wading through treacle and I'd be too exhausted after four pages! I will finish it one day though.

mintyfresh · 12/08/2010 20:29

Another huge fan of 'A fine Balance' - read it in about a week and was exhausted after all the late nights of reading!! Totally loved it...

Not a big fan of 'One Day' - maybe I was expecting too much with all the rave reviews on the front cover!

Struggled through 'Wolf Hall' because I thought I should....

Detested the Millennium Trilogy - that author had a twisted mind Hmm

Am looking forward to reading Trespass next as I always love Rose Tremain's books!

gailforce1 · 16/08/2010 19:37

Mintyfresh and other Rose Tremain fans, I have Music and Silence in my "to read" pile - is it good?

Aliarse · 16/08/2010 19:42

The Betrayal by Helen Dunmore (shortlisted for this years Booker) but read The Siege by her first as the characters are revisited in The Betrayal.

Themasterandmargaritas · 17/08/2010 19:07

'One Day' definitely. I couldn't put it down, but perhaps I enjoyed it because I could identify with it, having been the same ages as the characters at the same time/era. Smile

mintyfresh · 24/08/2010 11:36

gailforce1 - Music and Silence is one of my all time favourite books - is brilliant!

CarmelitaMiggs · 24/08/2010 11:49

Brooklyn

Tony and Susan (first 2/3rds utterly brilliant, then it goes off boil -- but truly the first 2/3rds is worth it)

The Privileges

jbond · 19/09/2010 17:53

i'm reading an excellent book about north korea called nothing to envy. really informative and interesting. i just enjoyed reading about somewhere so different to the west it's almost alien!

yUMMYmUMMYb · 20/09/2010 13:30

Wow, so many people have similar taste in books that i like - probably why they are bestsellers!
I like easy reading, page turning kind of stuff (not deep and meaningful), my suggestions would include:
Linwood Barclay - too close to home was great (murder, suspense and great twists)
Cecelia Ahern - can't recall the name, but red cover (think christmas baubles) - very interesting moral story.
The Millenium Triology - as everyone else has said...

I also, bizarrely like real life feats of survival stories:
Lance Armstrong - it's not about the bike
Between a rock and a hard place - Aaron something (guy who is rock climbing in wilds of america and a huge rock falls and traps his arm - does he get out alive?)

rachael2401 · 15/03/2011 20:23

The Passage by Justin Cronin is BRILLIANT. I also enjoyed The Help and One Day. Also highly recommend all of Kate Atkinson's Jackson Brodie series which starts with 'Case Histories'.

gailforce1 · 19/04/2011 20:22

mintyfresh If you are around I loved Music and Silence - Thank you!

melliebobs · 14/05/2011 19:16
