100 BOOKS YOUR CHILD MUST READ - what are your nominations?

TillyBookClub · 22/01/2009 21:22

Childhood books stay with you forever. Whether Roald Dahl's dark humour or the derry-do of Hardy Brothers, the earthy anarchy of Stig of the Dump or the magical excitement of The Secret Garden, they have a lasting effect on how you approach the big wide world.

What book do you think children MUST read before they leave home?

And while we're at it, what book should every adult read?

(My children's nomination: The Iron Man by Ted Hughes
My adult nomination: 100 Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez)

As an adult, Tess of the D'urbevilles, Wuthering Heights and Son's and Lovers.

Roald Dahl's Boy. Truly wonderful and brilliant at getting children to IMAGINE!!!

candiceb · 13/04/2010 12:26

You can't beat Roald Dahl for the younger kids.
1984 and Lord of the flies might get the cogs turning for teenagers

Anne of Green Gables
Homecoming- Cynthia Voigt (anyone else remember this one? The first of the Tillerman series)

Preschool books:
Where the Wild Things Are
The Church Mouse (wonderful period illustrations)
The Tiger Who Came to Tea

Middle:
Mrs Pepperpot
James and the Giant Peach (any book that starts with the parents being eaten by a rhino has to be good)
Alice In Wonderland
Mrs Frisby and the Rats of NIMH
The Children of Green Knowe (you can actually go and visit Green Knowe)

Teenager:
The Pigman
The Twelfth Day of July
Anne Frank's Diary

Adult:
since the OP has already chosen 100 years of solitude it has to be:

depending on your mood.
