What book do you think children MUST read before they leave home?

I would say anything by Roald Dahl or Dick King Smith but suppose they've been done.

If I am actually going to lit myself to just one it would be Goodnight Mister Tom. Every adult should read it too.

Would still recommend Enid Blyton despite the reputation of her books nowadays, enjoyed her books as a child.

For very young the Winnie The Witch series are brilliant loved by girls and boys. Charlie and Lola also. Little girl lived reading this book repeatedly. Practically learned how to read because of it! Dr Suess books are also brilliant.

Wizard of Earthsea trilogy. I wish I read these when I was younger!

My DD (16) loves books but is not a big reader, so i read loads of books to her over the years - all Narnia, Harry Potter and His Dark Materials. Tom's Midnight Garden. Weirdstone of Brisingamen. Roger Lancellyn Green's Tales of Troy and Adventures of Robin Hood. Several of the Willard Pryce Adventure stories.

Miss it! And last night had the fun of eavesdropping as she read one of those awful Fairy books to the girl she was babysitting for (over the baby monitor before we went out with the parents!). Lovely sense of completing the circle.

A must read for children are Roald Dahl's books for beautiful description and narration.

Agree with The Silver Sword a brilliant book.

Oh and Shadow the sheepdog.

Little Women and the sequels for older kids.

Wild Swans - I cried and cried at this recount of life over 3 generations in China - a stunning book.

Glad to see Alan garner has made lots of people's lists. I would add books by Rosemary Sutcliffe. I also really enjoyed Rumer Godden's books, though I got a bit of a fright when my granny gave me 'The Peacock Spring' to read when I was 11. Nina Bawden is also excellent.

DS loves Roald Dahl's books.

Children - The classics - Wuthering Heights, Pride and Prejudice, Little Women. All by Usborne books for young readers. My daughter was eight when she read them.

also teenagers should definitely give Wuthering Heights a go ? a much better love triangle than Twilight!
