Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt - I read it on holiday recently. The concept is nuts but it’s such a heart warming story, I loved it!

Sara237 · 17/07/2025 22:56

Trisha Ashley kindle books. High literature they are not but there's something about them that I find peaceful and uplifting. Especially the Christmas ones.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 17/07/2025 22:57

The Offing by Benjamin Myers. Possibly the most beautiful book I've ever read both the story and the language. I was so sad to finish it.

BarbaraVineFan · 17/07/2025 23:07

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine is very light, if you care about that, but very heartwarming

BashfulClam · 17/07/2025 23:08

‘Keanu Reeves is not in love with you’ is really quite funny. I laughed a lot at parts of it.

TheSmallAssassin · 17/07/2025 23:22

My recommendation would be Small Bomb at Timperley by Lissa Evans, light and heartwarming.

FloraBotticelli · 17/07/2025 23:24

I just picked Unscripted by Fearne Cotton, it says ‘uplifting and heartfelt’ on the cover.

custardlover · 17/07/2025 23:34

God almighty not Eleanor Oliphant! That still haunts me.

I suggest The Husbands or Anxious People, both brilliant and charming and funny.

When I’m looking for that in a book, I return time and again to Full Moon by PG Wodehouse.

cornflakegirl · 17/07/2025 23:47

Cranford by Elizabeth Gaskell

Nice!

Also, what about any of the Mapp and Lucia series by E. F. Benson?

A 'flinchingly' true story of a coast path walk: 'I'm no Shakespeare' by Cheryl Dummer

Dear Mrs Bird by A J Pearce.

I love this and found it uplifting but the plot is centered around grief so may not meet the ask 100%. Have you read any Emily Henry or Taylor Jenkins Reid?

Ilovemyshed · 18/07/2025 14:21

Bucolic, lightweight and cosy: Miss Read or the Burracombe series by Lilian Harry. Books that I want to climb into and live in the villages they describe.

Funny: PG Wodehouse

A wonderful tapestry of life and a family: Swann Trilogy by Delderfield, or the Horseman Riding by Trilogy.

Ripping good stories: Nevil Shute. Start with A Town Like Alice or Trustee from the Toolroom.

Also
Cider with Rosie
James Herriott
Cold Comfort Farm
Forever Amber

Octopus45 · 18/07/2025 14:24

The new Sarah Morgan one, The Summer Escape. I got the Kindle version for 99p

DPotter · 18/07/2025 14:24

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day - Winifred Watson
The Dictionary of Lost Words - Pip Williams

ReignOfError · 18/07/2025 14:33

The Princess Bride by William Goldman - both like and unlike the film
Old Baggage, Lissa Evans
Not Forgetting the Whale, John Ironmonger
Another Benjamin Myers, this time Rare Singles

Carandache18 · 18/07/2025 14:42

Completely agree about Lissa Evans and Old Baggage. Also V For Victory.

Nancy Mitford- The Pursuit of Love and Love in a Cold Climate.
Eva Ibbotson-The Morning Gift
Dodie Smith- I Capture The Castle
Annie Proulx- The Shipping News
Jilly Cooper- The Common Years

These (except for Lissa Evans) are all 20thC books. It's hard to think who is writing cheerful books now.

That was mine too! Give it a go OP!
Definitely not Eleanor Oliphant as it deals with child abuse and other very dark topics.

I second this!

Enchanted April is a good one often recommended on here.

TheCheeseTax · 18/07/2025 20:13

In Her Shows, JoJo Moyes. I listened to it and it was incredible! Well read, great story.

TheMagnificentBean · 18/07/2025 20:15

Elizabeth Goudge is classic but very comforting
