Hi all,

I'm Tilly - the folks round at Mumsnet Towers have asked me to come and do a bit of matchmaking for the Mumsnet Book Club. Having worked in publishing for the last eight years, most recently as Penguin's Literary Marketing Director, I know there's a bewildering choice out there. Reading a book is a big commitment and you don't want to feel it's all been a waste of time. As Woody Allen put it, "If I was given the chance to live my life over again, I'd do it all the same, except I wouldn't read Beowulf'. So I'm here to help steer us through the best reads throughout the year, with a bit of luck sidestepping the duds. At the very least we're promising the following:

We'll pick books for you to choose from that are page-turning, illuminating and which hopefully tell us something we didn't know before, or make us laugh about something we did.

We won't pick any of the following: misery memoirs, celebrity biographies, yummy-mummy lit, books over 800 pages or books with no punctuation or capital letters.

All the books will be priced under £13 (most will be well under) and will be readily available to buy.

We're keen to focus on contemporary authors so that they can come and do web chats with us, or at least answer some of your questions. But if everyone is longing to try Tolstoy or always wanted to give Nabokov a shot then we'll happily go there too.

As well as choosing the titles, we'll be contacting authors and publishers for insider info on our Book of the Month, links to interviews, author history, previous novels, etc. and also to try and give you the chance to talk to the author direct. We'll invite the author to chat live at the end of our book club session, or failing that we'll try to get him/her to address any questions that crop up from our discussion.

And now for the diary dates:
As a rule we'll pick out three or four books just before the beginning of the month, and then on the first of each month and the week that follows, we'll put it to the vote. Once chosen, we'll have around four weeks to read our Book of the Month, and then we'll chat about it usually on the last Tuesday evening of that month with exceptions perhaps for Christmas/New Year. Copious amounts of fine wine beside the keyboard are an optional extra, naturally.

It would be great if possible if, rather than starting threads early, everyone held onto their opinions and discussion points for our Tuesday session, so we all get to talk about it at the same time and no crucial plot twists are revealed ahead of time!

So the rough diary for the next couple of months will be:

October Book of the Month - Page-turners
September 24th - Choice of three books goes up on site, ready for Mumsnetters to vote on
October 1st - Polls close and Book of the Month selected
Tuesday October 30th, 8.30-10pm - Open discussion on October book

November Book of the Month - Booker Prize
October 24th - Choice of three or four books up on site, polling commences
November 1st - Vote concluded
Tuesday November 27th, 8.30-10pm - Discuss November book

We'll give that a go for starters and see if works out but we're conscious that this is a work in progress - do tell us what is working and what isn't working for you so we can fine-tune it until everyone's (or nearly everyone at least ) is happy.

October's three books are up now - go to our Book of the Month October poll page to cast your vote.

And please do let us know your suggestions and ideas for anything else you'd like us to do with the club.

Thanks and happy reading!

Tillyxx (Mumsnet Book Club Editor)

TillyBookClub, can I suggest you consider Blue Sky July by Nia Wyn (Seren Books) for a future book club?

I don't know what we are supposed to do but I am about to start reading What Was Lost by Catherine O Flynn.

I'm really looking forward to it .

Can I join in please? I need a good excuse to just sit and read for a change. It'll also wean me off my knitting addiction

Joekate, foxinsocks, wheels on bus, absolutely everyone welcome - if you can find a copy of In the Country of Men and read it by next Tuesday then come and get stuck into the first session on Tuesday evening at 8-10pm. We'll all go online at 8 and chat about the book on this thread, and then at 9pm the author will be coming online and everyone can fire questions at him.

If 4 days to read it is a bit hectic, don't worry, we've got our November Book of the Month choice coming up right now. I've written the page but just having a wee problem getting it live and running.... There's a choice of 4 books from the Booker shortlist - and all of them are less than 250 pages and under £13. Quick and affordable, just how we like it.

Flying Saucer, thanks for the tip - will look it up now.

foxinsocks, let me know how What Was Lost goes and if you'd recommend it to all of us.

wheelsonbus, thanks for lovely message

Okay, back to techie stuff, will post as soon as page is ready so you can all get voting on November

Okay. We may have been unfairly denied a general election but don't panic, November's Mumsnet Book of the Month contenders are now ready and waiting for your votes.

I've started a new thread called November Book Club that has the page link, or else you can click here to go straight to the books. Just to confirm, we'll do all our chatting about November books on the new thread, to keep it all neat and tidy. The poll page is open until 6pm on Thursday 1st November - at 6.05pm we'll announce the results.

So if you're itching to wield your democractic rights, have a look at our (rather impressive) November list and have your say...

OK, so I have finished the book. Sorry if this is a silly question, but I have never been in a book club before: On the 30th, do we just pitch in and say this is what I think of the book etc. etc. etc., or are we going to concentrate on certain themes - there just seems so much to discuss!

Report
HishamMatar · 28/10/2007 12:58

Its a very good question Madame Platypus - I reckon certain themes will probably emerge as the favourite topics of discussion. My guess is that everyone will initially want to express what they thought in general and then we'll focus on certain elements as the chat progresses. I'm going to kick off the session with a few questions so hopefully that will give us a bit of structure and we'll take it from there.

I think we're going to be breaking new ground - haven't ever heard of another online group..

Oops, that was a mistaken post under Hisham's name as we're testing his log-in for Tuesday. Sorry for confusion - its just boring old me really.

I'm all excited

Finished last night, now hoping to hell that my stepsister doesn't have a birthday tea thing (although if she does, I may just announce "school night" and run away in time for DH to do bedtime and me chat )

Just a reminder to everyone that we'll kick off at 8pm tomorrow evening and discuss the book amongst ourselves before Hisham joins us at 9pm, and then we'll probably warp up by about 10pm.

For anyone who can't be there tomorrow but would like to ask a question, please post your question up here in advance and Hisham will hopefully have time to answer it. Same goes if you have to leave the session before 9pm - just post up your message for the author and we'll make sure he gets to it.

Very excited...

Oh bum, I don't think there's much chance of me finishing in time - am only about 80 pages in... hmmm... I wonder if I can persuade dd (2.9) to entertain herself all afternoon whilst I sit and read....

It was good fun wasn't it - couldn't forsee how it would work with everyone posting simultaneously, but it helped me keep on my toes and re-think my original reactions to the book. I felt my brain shudder into gear too.

Hope you're up for the next one - I'm guessing there'll be strong feelings about The Gathering. Can't wait

There's nothing there -just a 'whoops, that link is broken'.

I've just finished a fantastic book called the Housekeeper and the Professor. It's slightly off the beaten track, a Japanese author, but really lovely about a maths professor with an 80-min memory, his housekeeper and her son. They sound like charicatures but they're not. just thought I'd mention it.

Can I suggest "When Will There Be Good News?" by Kate Atkinson?
