Hi all,

I'm Tilly - the folks round at Mumsnet Towers have asked me to come and do a bit of matchmaking for the Mumsnet Book Club. Having worked in publishing for the last eight years, most recently as Penguin's Literary Marketing Director, I know there's a bewildering choice out there. Reading a book is a big commitment and you don't want to feel it's all been a waste of time. As Woody Allen put it, "If I was given the chance to live my life over again, I'd do it all the same, except I wouldn't read Beowulf'. So I'm here to help steer us through the best reads throughout the year, with a bit of luck sidestepping the duds. At the very least we're promising the following:

We'll pick books for you to choose from that are page-turning, illuminating and which hopefully tell us something we didn't know before, or make us laugh about something we did.

We won't pick any of the following: misery memoirs, celebrity biographies, yummy-mummy lit, books over 800 pages or books with no punctuation or capital letters.

All the books will be priced under £13 (most will be well under) and will be readily available to buy.

We're keen to focus on contemporary authors so that they can come and do web chats with us, or at least answer some of your questions. But if everyone is longing to try Tolstoy or always wanted to give Nabokov a shot then we'll happily go there too.

As well as choosing the titles, we'll be contacting authors and publishers for insider info on our Book of the Month, links to interviews, author history, previous novels, etc. and also to try and give you the chance to talk to the author direct. We'll invite the author to chat live at the end of our book club session, or failing that we'll try to get him/her to address any questions that crop up from our discussion.

And now for the diary dates:
As a rule we'll pick out three or four books just before the beginning of the month, and then on the first of each month and the week that follows, we'll put it to the vote. Once chosen, we'll have around four weeks to read our Book of the Month, and then we'll chat about it usually on the last Tuesday evening of that month with exceptions perhaps for Christmas/New Year. Copious amounts of fine wine beside the keyboard are an optional extra, naturally.

It would be great if possible if, rather than starting threads early, everyone held onto their opinions and discussion points for our Tuesday session, so we all get to talk about it at the same time and no crucial plot twists are revealed ahead of time!

So the rough diary for the next couple of months will be:

October Book of the Month - Page-turners
September 24th - Choice of three books goes up on site, ready for Mumsnetters to vote on
October 1st - Polls close and Book of the Month selected
Tuesday October 30th, 8.30-10pm - Open discussion on October book

November Book of the Month - Booker Prize
October 24th - Choice of three or four books up on site, polling commences
November 1st - Vote concluded
Tuesday November 27th, 8.30-10pm - Discuss November book

We'll give that a go for starters and see if works out but we're conscious that this is a work in progress - do tell us what is working and what isn't working for you so we can fine-tune it until everyone's (or nearly everyone at least ) is happy.

October's three books are up now - go to our Book of the Month October poll page to cast your vote.

And please do let us know your suggestions and ideas for anything else you'd like us to do with the club.

Thanks and happy reading!

Tillyxx (Mumsnet Book Club Editor)

DoctorFrankenSquonk--thank you very much! I hope you enjoy it.

wheelybug · 12/10/2007 08:47

Mine still hasn't arrived - nor my one for my RL book club. Am glad to hear its not many pages and big print. Think RL bookclub one is too so haven't lost hope yet that I'll be able to read both by end of month. But then guess it will depend if strikes next week too....

wheelybug · 12/10/2007 08:50

Oh just done a search on my library on line thingy and they have it so I could go and get it from the library..... if I knew where my library card was ......

SpookyBearistheSpookyBear · 12/10/2007 08:57

You don't need your card, you can just say you've forgotten it and they can bring up your details from just your name and address.

That's how I manage to get books out on DH's name when my card's full .

wheelybug · 12/10/2007 08:59

spooky.

Last time I did that the librarian was very stern with me and said she'd do it 'just this once'. This was however months and months ago and the last time I went to the library so don't think she'll remember.

WIll see what the post brings and maybe pop in there today if neither show up.

DoctorFrankenSquonk · 12/10/2007 09:02

you could always confess that you've lost your card and the library may give you a replacement

My library uses keyring type cards so they are rather difficult to lose (well, that's the idea - all that actually happens is that when you can't find them, you've also lost your car keys so can't get to the farking library in the first place )

wheelybug · 12/10/2007 09:05

squonk.

I think I probably have lost it tbh as we're having loads of work done and lots of things are piled up in lots of places so its unlikely to be unearthed easily.

Flamesparrow · 12/10/2007 19:15

Mine's here!!!

Jas · 12/10/2007 19:49

Mine arrived today. (I ordered it from another library)
I had also lost my library card, but they replaced it immediately (I did have to show a proof of address though)

wheelybug · 12/10/2007 21:50

Grrr. mines not arrived today either.

Plan of action - if no show tomorrow I will attend library on Monday and face scary librarian and report losage of library card and borrow said text.

wheelybug · 13/10/2007 13:54

I walked passed the library today and popped in, was allowed to borrow just this once and then I'll have to pay for a replacement card.

So, the good news is I have the book. My RL book club book came in the post today though so I'll have to read that first but doesn't look like it will take too long !

DoctorFrankenSquonk · 16/10/2007 12:45

Eliza2 - it came this morning and have been stuck into it ever since

I won't post about it in case we do it as a book club book later on, but so far I'm enjoying it

DoctorFrankenSquonk · 16/10/2007 12:45

wheelybug - did the librarian look at you over her glasses?

bubblesbabe · 16/10/2007 16:29

Finally arrived today so need to get reading - unfortunately have discovered Maggie O'Farrell this week and so am trying to co-read!!

CocoDeBearisCocoDeBear · 17/10/2007 08:38

TillyBookClub, just wanted to pick you up on something...

When we voted for this month's choice, you said we were voting for "pageturners" rather than great literature, and that that would come next month. with a Booker category.

However, I'd say that all of the three choices we were given this month are "proper" books, that could have been nominated for a prize like the Booker, and certainly in some cases HAVE been.

I'm being pedantic, I know!

Eliza2 · 17/10/2007 09:08

DoctorFrankenSquonk--I'm so pleased!

HUNXXXX · 18/10/2007 17:46

i think i love tilly
she is so masterful

QueenofBleach · 19/10/2007 14:35

Want to read your book Eliza, will have to order, we are in the next door village from Tyneham to the west, and love going down there. When I was at college I did a project on the effect of the army on the lnad and was lucky enough to get taken to the great house, which the public can't get to.

Eliza2 · 19/10/2007 15:58

QueenofBleach--that's amazing you're so close! I love it down there, the coast is just stunning. We were down at the end of August, on a rare sunny day, and it was magic. Lucky you.

Yes, that Tyneham big house looks VERY interesting. Funnily enough a descendant of the family who lived there now lives in a village near us and I met him at a party!

I kept burbling on that my version of the village was HIGHLY fictionalised and that the characters living in my version of the manor(unhappily bisexual, promiscuous, and alcoholic respectively) bore no relation to any person living or dead, etc, etc.

I still blush when I meet his wife in the supermarket.

DoctorFrankenSquonk · 19/10/2007 16:00

eliza2 - can I borrow you - here for a mo?

wheelybug · 19/10/2007 16:38

Squonk - Sadly it didn't confirm my narrow minded stereotyping - it was a young man without glasses to peer over. In fact, he was very helpful and went and found the book for me. Must have fancied me (which would prove that he wasn't wearing glasses - in fact, I think he was just bored).

TillyBookClub · 22/10/2007 12:38

Sorry for delay in replies - have been away on hols. Read the Booker books whilst on the sunlounger and am writing up the next set of choices for November BOTM. Will post up on Wednesday evening, ready for you all to get voting again.

CocoBear, I agree - all three October books are high quality (and all did get prize nominations). I guess I was pushing the fact that they weren't books you 'should' be reading because they've been given a 2 page review in Guardian - they're mainly great stories with good plots. Didn't want to make them sound too worthy, really.

Hunxx, erm, not quite sure what you mean but thanks very much all the same.

Wheelybug, glad you got your copy in the end - was about to post you mine.

Bubblesbabe, are you reading Maggie O'Farell's latest, The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox? I was going to do it as one of October's choices, but couldnt' decide - v interested to hear what you think of it, and if you think we should do it as a pick.

Eliza2, your book waiting for me when I got back from airport - started last night and enjoying very much. I was born and grew up near Bridport in Dorset, right on Chesil beach, the descriptions are making me long to be there.

Will let you all know when the November choice is up and running... and hope everyone's thinking of questions to ask Hisham next Tuesday evening.

Lucky you, growing up in Dorset, Tilly! Glad you're enjoying the book.

wheelybug · 22/10/2007 20:36

OOh Tilly - you are kind but as it happens I now have 2 copies as my postal one turned up too. Haven't read either though () as still trawling through the trash I have to read for RL bookclub. Its such an easy read but is taking me forever because its so rubbish.

Eliza - I shall have to add your book to my wishlist as it seems to be going down well !

wheelsonthebus · 24/10/2007 09:55

this is fab -never been in a book club but always wanted to join one. will buy book today and prepare for a hugely intelligent discussion. tilly - you are doing a good job
