David Nicholls has an exceptional talent for observational comedy, and it is present on every page of his Booker Prize long-listed new novel, US. Just like his previous novels Starter for Ten and the phenomenally successful One Day, US is brilliantly detailed and beautifully structured. After 21 years, Douglas and Connie are at the end of their marriage. It was always an unlikely match: the biochemist with his Billy Joel records and the East End-dwelling artist. They embark on a European Grand Tour along with their teenage son Albie, in a last ditch attempt to be together as a family. As they criss-cross from Paris to Amsterdam, Munich to Venice, Douglas desperately hopes to win back the love of his wife and the respect of his son, whilst ruminating on art, science and the years gone by.

Its time to let David go and finish the other half of that bottle of wine...

Many many thanks to everyone for their questions and for making this evening's chat.

David, thank you so much for spending your evening with us and for such honest and thoughtful and entertaining answers. I can't wait to see what you write next - please will you come back and tell us about it?

Many thanks once again, both for tonight and for your brilliant novel, and good luck with it all...

@tripfiction

Hi David - How did you decide on the locations you chose to depict in "us"? An eclectic mix....

Last one I'm afraid. They were a combination of real Grand Tour locations, cities I'd visited promoting One Day, places that just fitted with the plot. Munich, for example, which is the gateway between northern and southern europe and also a great, underrated city. Go!

My typing is deteriorating and also its time to go. Many, many thanks for all the questions and for the kind words too. I was, I confess, a little fearful but have enjoyed it very much. Now I have to go to bed and try not to think of all the things I should have said...
But thank you, thank you and good night,
best wishes,
David

What a shame I missed this. But how good of David to give such detailed and thoughtful answers to the questions. Obviously a lovely man as well as a great writer.

Unfortunately missed the webchat but agree with hackmum that David gave detailed and thoughtful answers. I received a free copy, thank you Mumsnet, which I am now going to donate to my local library.

Unfortunately I missed the webchat, as I was working. I received a free copy of the book and have read it twice and dh is now reading it Smile Just wanted to say thank you for the book and that I thoroughly enjoyed it and am looking forward to David's next one Wink

Thanks for the free copy, only just finished it. Could have done with it being about 2/3 as long. I was pleased to find the timeline at the end with titles of the pictures, as I felt I was being given a potted Art History qual as I went along, I'll now go and look them all up. Had I seen it before I would have printed off pics to check against the text.

I was a bit concerned about where the money came from. They would have got back to a massive credit card bill, even on a private company researcher salary that would take years to pay off, all those emergency flights.

I hope Freja doesn't get hooked in by his search. A sweet holiday romance is not the making for a transnational relationship. He needs new friends.

Many, many thanks to Mumsnet and Hodder & Stoughton for the brilliant signed copy of 'Us' by David Nicholls.

This was waiting for me when I returned from abroad last Autumn. Being hesitant to even open the book and risk 'damaging' it, put a zany idea in motion by requesting a copy to borrow & review from my local library. But who knew how popular this book would be? 18 copies in stock, all out on loan, I'm placed 36th (!!!) on the waiting list. That was Nov 2014. Three months later and (finally) I get my hands on a copy.

Read & reviewed .... (better late than never I say)
