David Nicholls has an exceptional talent for observational comedy, and it is present on every page of his Booker Prize long-listed new novel, US. Just like his previous novels Starter for Ten and the phenomenally successful One Day, US is brilliantly detailed and beautifully structured. After 21 years, Douglas and Connie are at the end of their marriage. It was always an unlikely match: the biochemist with his Billy Joel records and the East End-dwelling artist. They embark on a European Grand Tour along with their teenage son Albie, in a last ditch attempt to be together as a family. As they criss-cross from Paris to Amsterdam, Munich to Venice, Douglas desperately hopes to win back the love of his wife and the respect of his son, whilst ruminating on art, science and the years gone by.

So looking forward to reading this - I loved all his previous ones, and the review in The Independent was just incredible. (A faultless novel? Pretty wow!)

RachelMumsnet · 23/09/2014 14:33

Ahead of October bookclub David bobbed into Mumsnet HQ last week and kindly read an extract from US to give you a taster. Watch the video here

Merrylegs · 23/09/2014 17:56

Ooh that was brutal. I was wincing. Great stuff. Starter for Ten made me SNORT with laughter. Looking forward to reading this one.

Received my free copy too, thank you!! 57 pages in and thoroughly enjoying it so far. Loved the 1980s tuna bake dinner party.

Ainat266 · 03/10/2014 22:58

Finished reading this last week. Terrific. Looking forward to the web chat.

toothlessoldhag · 08/10/2014 15:15

Thanks Mumsnet HQ - I just received my signed copy of Us. Perfect timing as I'd just run out of books to read (having said that, I've at least 3000 books on my shelves, but you know what it's like, I still couldn't find anything I fancied reading!)

BettyMoody · 09/10/2014 07:25

Hi
thanks for the copy.
Unfortunately after dragging myself to a (very heavy) page 156 ( oh for a kindle version!) I gave up, I found the premise of the holiday unlikely and the characters dull.

BettyMoody · 09/10/2014 07:26

I am sure its me, not you.

chris69 · 12/10/2014 19:11

When I received my free copy I was over the moon, ive enjoyed David Nicholls previous books and couldn't wait to get started. Beautifully written and with great understanding of the nature of relationships I thoroughly enjoyed this lastest offering from Mr Nicholls.

MrsRedWhite214 · 13/10/2014 20:00

I've got my copy, just starting it this week

carriewintermeadow · 13/10/2014 20:20

Just finished the book and absolutely loved it.

KiaOraOAotearoa · 13/10/2014 20:31

I'm halfway through.
Absolutely love it so far, really funny, in a 'a bit close to the bone' sort of way.Smile

carriewintermeadow · 14/10/2014 01:31

Sorry, I meant to post more, but was interrupted. I'll come back later.

BettyMoody · 14/10/2014 02:17

Do you not think the idea of going on a trip when you've deCided to divorce is unlikely? Does the man not strike you as dull and wimpy?

KiaOraOAotearoa · 14/10/2014 06:20

Good point betty, but he did ask whether they should cancel, Connie insisted they still go.
I keep thinking:he's trying to save his marriage but still laminates the sodding routes. He's making such an 'effort' to enjoy the museums and art galleries, his comments are so funny, but he really doesn't get it, does he?

TranquilityofSolitude · 14/10/2014 06:32

The kindle version of 'Starter for Ten' is free on Amazon at the moment.
