Trendy Hendy leaving Eton

TonTonMacoute · 01/05/2026 19:29

Thank goodness for that. DS left in 2018 so no longer have skin in the game, but I think he has not been good for the school.

Interested to know what current parents think.

Agree with the yawn!
Luckily my DC left SPS before the woke appointment of a female HighMaster

WhatWouldGinDo · 05/05/2026 08:45

I would be interested to know why Trendy Hendy is so unpopular -does anyone know? From the outside looking in, I think he has helped improve Eton's image externally, but he seems very divisive even with people that I'd expect to be on the more progressive side.

CurlewKate · 05/05/2026 07:30

I think you’re supposed to call it Win Col….

@CurlewKate that only comes once you are officially there !

RobertB2024 · 05/05/2026 10:46

Hendy's father Giles H , 84 , who was later Senior Partner at Slaughter & May went to MichaelHouse in South Africa .

RobertB2024 · 05/05/2026 10:53

Probably to raise funds for , & run ,
an Academy group
rather than be wasted
as a school headmaster .

Waldegrave's mistake .

Dear Old Etonian,

Simon Henderson has announced that he will step down as the 71st Head Master of Eton at the end of Summer 2027, by which time he will have served 12 years in post.

Simon’s tenure will be remembered for many things – for his compassion and humanity, for encouraging the values of kindness and tolerance, and for his determination to ensure that Eton continues to evolve to meet the demands of the 21st century. On behalf of the board of Fellows, I would like to thank Simon, ably supported by his wife Ali, very much indeed for their exemplary service, which has manifested itself in so many different ways.

Simon has written the following about his time as Head Master: Eton is an extraordinary institution with the ambition, capacity and resources to make a truly meaningful difference to young people’s lives, both within and beyond our walls. It is a rare privilege indeed to work with such talented and engaging boys, alongside colleagues who are not only so expert in their field but also so deeply committed to their vocation. I believe profoundly in what we do here and in the values that underpin it and that belief has only strengthened over time.

While the success of the College has always been a shared endeavour and been reflected in the strength of our community, it has been the greatest honour of my professional life to help guide Eton over more than a decade. I feel, however, that the time is now right to pass this responsibility to someone new.

Under Simon’s guidance, Eton and Etonians have flourished. The school remains full and vibrant, with boys excelling across an ever-broader range of opportunities – from academic study to sport, music, theatre and societies. He has led the school with great skill through some challenging moments, not least the Covid pandemic, and has introduced important changes to the way Eton is run which will serve us well as we look to the future. Simon has driven a significant expansion of bursary provision, including the introduction of the Orwell Award; the development of major facilities such as the Athens Swimming Centre and the nearly complete Colman Sports Complex; and a substantial strengthening of Eton’s partnerships with local schools, including Holyport, as well as new academy collaborations with Star Academies in Dudley and Oldham.

Of course, Simon still has almost four halves left as Head Master, so plenty of time remains to celebrate his numerous achievements and legacies. But for now, the Vice-Provost, Fellows and I wish Simon and Ali every good fortune in the time ahead, both at Eton and beyond.

The search for Eton’s 72nd Head Master will begin forthwith.

Sir Nicholas Coleridge CBE DL
Provost | Eton College | Windsor | Berkshire |SL4 6DW

I heard the head of Teddies was desperate for the job but he is very, well, tedious…
I wonder if they will look to another country to recruit. Australians and South Africans are very pro-single sex education.

Is that Chirnside? Article in the Sunday Times today has him as top favourite.

Why so rude? Just because you aren't interested in this opinion, doesn't mean it's boring and can be dismissed without comment.

I know a lot more about the situation at Eton than you might think (not obliged to explain why here) and I have real sympathy with this poster's opinion! You may not feel it's relevant to the thread, but others might.

RobertB2024 · 21/06/2026 23:47

Any one else as a candidate ?

Any one else as a candidate ?

No other names were mentioned in the ST article, so I'm guessing they are pretty much through with the process. I did notice this piece
^^
Female candidates are understood to have been interviewed for the job. The all-boys school has never had a female head in its 586-year history, but such a change would follow other elite boys’ schools.

There are plenty of female beaks at Eton and a pretty formidable bunch they are too, they have had a female Master in College and I believe the current deputy is a woman.

I suspect the school establishment were keen to have an OE back in the role after Henderson, which would obviously preclude a woman, although some girls did go there (mainly housemasters' daughters) during an experiment in the 80s

It may also be relevant that Chirnside was a housemaster at Eton, even if not for long. The structure of Eton is quite different from other boarding schools where a lot more is devolved down to housemasters, they do far more than the houseparents in some other schools. Even teaching at the school doesn't fully give a full understanding of what it's like to be a housemaster, and the balance between the leadership team and the HMs.

Xiaoxiong · 23/06/2026 10:47

(That being said, it may not be Chirnside at all! I did wonder about that Times article and who was briefing there.)

ItalianWays · 23/06/2026 12:51

@Xiaoxiong I think he’s desperate enough to have his own PR team.

utterlyconfused1 · 26/06/2026 13:20

Probably no surprise that it is Chirnside that’s been appointed.

Notgonnalieaboutthis · 26/06/2026 13:24

Is that you Catherine?

Reading this and it is quite obvious that for the majority of people you might as well have posted in Ancient Greek . Which I assume is a subject offered at Eton.
At the same time knowing the ins and outs , gossip wise is something any parent sending a boy to secondary school can relate to . All the messages deleted are addressing some rumour or talking point about Mr Henderson . Must Google or try to find articles relating to this .

I agree. Henderson was a beak at the school for several years, but I don't think he really got the place. Tony Little had been educated at the school and it's interesting to look back and see how many people he upset when he started, but he had a fuller understanding of how the school works and he knew how to operate to get the changes he wanted. He once commented along the lines that the power in the school has a very low centre of gravity. Ignore staff and boys at your peril, not to mention the whole OEA.

An ex-boyfriend of mine, who had been there at the time, used to entertain me with tales from ‘the experiment in the 80s’.

But I’ve seen so little reference to it subsequently that I sometimes worry I must have imagined it.

I knew someone who one of the girls, when she tells people she went to Eton they think she's joking. Her father was an HM. I believe Boris was there at the same time too, which may explain a lot.

I was at university with Alastair Chirnside, and he was housemaster to two boys (now young men) whose parents are friends of mine. I don’t know anyone who actually knows him have a bad word to say about him - he’s a lovely man and a kind and clever teacher and frankly I think Eton are lucky to have him back.
