Hello everyone,

why is VAT being added onto Private school fees? i am very angered by this decision ,since i have worked for 20 years to send my children privately, and now it looks like i cant afford it. Any opinions/answers please?

OP posts:
Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 26/08/2024 19:01

If you look at any of the other 100 threads about this you may get some answers.

Addictforanex · 26/08/2024 19:02

Because it was a Labour party election pledge/ in their manifesto and they won the election.

I get it OP, I also have children in private school and will face a big surge in the bill.

But it can’t be a surprise to you now, surely?

pinkfleece · 26/08/2024 19:03

Have you just noticed this now?

Emmanuelll · 26/08/2024 20:50

Take them out of boarding and send them as day kids 🤷🏻‍♀️

Emmanuelll · 26/08/2024 20:51

Btw, which rock have you been under for the last few months? 🧐

anonhop · 26/08/2024 20:54

Because people are jealous of your success & would rather see your children be dragged down, even if that takes resources away from their own kids, for "equality".

They'd rather all kids had a substandard education than some flourished. It's a shame

When you are accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression.

OldTinHat · 26/08/2024 21:22

What????!!! Have you only just realised this?! After the months and months and many a MN post?!

Oh dear, what a dilemma to have after crawling from under that rock...!

Did you vote in the election?

invisiblecat · 26/08/2024 21:33

No particular reason to quote this. I just like it because it is so very true.

longdistanceclaraclara · 26/08/2024 21:35

You only just noticed?

DanceMumTaxi · 26/08/2024 21:47

Bloody hell how have you got the wherewithal to earn enough money to afford boarding school yet you have failed to noticed something that has been all over the news and social media for months. It was one of the most talked about policies that helped Labour win the election.

Farting · 26/08/2024 21:51

Muh.. ok mumsnet need moar traffic to sell the advertising.

got it

anonhop · 26/08/2024 23:11

@Emmanuelll not claiming it's oppression, but you're not denying it's a "drag everyone down to the lowest common denominator" tactic...

Not at all. @anonhop told the truth and you just don’t like it.

dottiehens · 27/08/2024 21:35

Honestly because this country is gone to the pits. Only country charging VAT but they are doing a legal challenge on September. Join the group education not taxation as suggested.

Thos is sadly too true.

Emmanuelll · 27/08/2024 21:57

@DornfordYates clearly you don't realise that not every person is self centred and self absorbed.

FYI my daughter goes to a private school so this will affect me. I still support the policy.

It was not my intention to question your motives. But there is a reason why other countries don’t have VAT on education. It’s a good thing when parents want to invest in making their kids smarter.

This is a policy of envy. In the end it will cost the government more than the extra revenue raised. Kids whose parents would have spent money on private education will now take up a state school place and when they’re 18 or 21 their parents will spend the money saved on kickstarting them on the property ladder. You don’t take away privilege, you just move it from one thing to another.

Emmanuelll · 27/08/2024 22:33

Utter nonsense. The vast majority of private school parents can afford the increases, no problem. I call BS on all these sob stories about parents who live on bread and water because their children can't possibly learn in a revolting state school.

There is a recent thread on here where people were asked how much their annual income was if their child was in private schools and most of them stated between £100k and £3 million!

The truth is that they have become accustomed to vulnerable people being the target for all the hits and they now feel that they are entitled to keep on increasing their wealth at the expense of the many. I have no sympathy whatsoever.

Before the it became clear that Labour was going to get in, the majority of people on MN with children in private school would say that private school was only worth it if you could afford to miss the money.

Oh and if you think private schools make children smarter then I question your own thinking skills. You cannot make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. I have a friend whose child got 8 9s and two 8s at the local state secondary.

Edited

Sure, sure.

If you didn’t think private schools made kids smarter, you lot wouldn’t be trying to shut them down in the first place. You’d have to be a right idiot being upset by rich people wasting their money while freeing up a state school place.

Emmanuelll · 27/08/2024 23:12

I'm not 'trying to shut them down'. My own daughter attends one due to her PDA.

There will not be a massive influx of private children into state - sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear. I would bet that things will carry on as normal.

DornfordYates · 27/08/2024 23:14

I may take you up on that. What odds are you offering?
