Simply cannot afford/ justify the cost of uk boarding schools. No parental help self funded, it is / will kill us. Would love to try and replicate, happy to move abroad to do so (we can wfh /internatinal jobs)

. 3 girls all brilliant all rounders, but particularly sport talented (hockey). 12y 11y 9y old.

Looking at re locating abroad . English only fluent language
School the priority for relocation, we can easily sort job post covid

Any recommendations For Schools? Not sure where to even start!

Thanks

Lots of great boarding schools in Singapore, Hong Kong and Thailand but cost of relocating would be pretty expensive.
Also daily living costs can be expensive if you want to have a certain type of lifestyle.
Could you try and move closer to really good state schools?

I think it can be tough to be the 'poor kid' at certain schools .

No boarding schools in HK bar the Harrow franchise which is nothing like a UK boarding school. Would not suit a sporty child in the slightest as a boarder as HK sport is mainly through clubs, not schools. Majority will be day pupils or strict weekly boarders.

Singapore I don't think has any boarding schools- there's Marlborough over the border in Malaysia but again, it's franchised. UWC has boarding but literally 5% - it's not a boarding school in the UK sense.

Canada has some, as does Australia. No idea what the costs are.

As others have said, if you are serious, Ireland. Cheaper, sporty and English speaking. Although health care and other aspects of Irish life are very pricey.

If you are just looking for how to replicate, then a strict phone policy at home, extra curricular clubs and maybe a private day school with long hours should be enough.

@Letsgetouttahere2023 is getting 'slated' they're not because they cannot afford BS and are not recognising their privilege.

OMG12 · 25/06/2023 20:00

I refuse to believe this is not made up, surely no one could be this clueless and be happy moving countries, taking the kids into a foreign culture etc rather than do what 99% of kids do and not board and the parents actually look after their kids rather than take them out to dinner occasionally.

it has to be a massive joke …Right???

Innachu · 25/06/2023 20:01

Have a look at Malta. Less expensive English spoken..

timetorefresh · 25/06/2023 20:01

I just take my kids to after school clubs and remove their phones when I don't want them to have. Saves a fortune on school fees

CharlotteRumpling · 25/06/2023 20:02

Am just baffled by this thread. You would relocate all the way abroad just to put your 3 dds' in boarding school?

By the way, there is plenty of sex, drugs, and social media in most boarding schools.

Mommasgotabrandnewbag · 25/06/2023 20:03

Some people really do love in a very different world.

LIZS · 25/06/2023 20:03

If it must be boarding look at state boarding schools although probably too late for your elder two. Surely you could achieve much of those criteria via a day school anyway.

Thoughtful2355 · 25/06/2023 20:03

dont do boarding then just send them to private school -_- unless you cant stand parenting your own kids?

I have always thought boarding schools were really orphanages for rich kids.

They are.

Lemonademoney · 25/06/2023 20:04

This is hilarious

primoseyellow · 25/06/2023 20:04

@illiterato There are boarding schools in Singapore, friend has kids who board there.

They seem very happy, but Im not sure what the teaching is like.

Thoughtful2355 · 25/06/2023 20:04

Also can i say, as someone who DID go to a boarding school for a while. all of the people who also went are super fucked up and not decent or well educated people. met better from private and state schools. They just didnt develop nicely

EnergyJaguar · 25/06/2023 20:06

Have you spoken to your current school? I’m sure they wouldn’t want to lose 3 sets of school fees. You might be able to negotiate

VinoVeritas1 · 25/06/2023 20:07

We'd like to live nearby so can come home for weekend / we can watch matches / take them out for dinner etc

Its a wind-up

Littlewhitecat · 25/06/2023 20:07

This thread cannot be real - immersive education 🤣 oh and a stonking drug habit if the very well known boarding school near me is representative of the boarding school experience. Plus my mum is the product of boarding school and in my experience it doesn't make for emotionally intelligent adults.

There are schools that have boarding, like UWC. But the boarders are a tiny minority. They are day schools with dorms. It is not at all the same as going to a boarding school where the majority board and which is therefore set up with boarders in mind.

I mean, there may be one, and if you know what it's called I'm happy to stand corrected, but if so I've never heard of it and I've combed the Singaporean international schools quite extensively.

CharlotteRumpling · 25/06/2023 20:08

Has to be a wind-up.

We want them to be in immersive education environment, top facilities, no socual media at midnight weirdness as phones banned and living with friends there so compulsion doesn't exist etc etc.

We'd like to live nearby so can come home for weekend / we can watch matches / take them out for dinner etc

I work in a UK boarding school. There is A LOT of social media at midnight nonsense - no matter how many phones we take off them, they've always got more! Plus the international boarders are up at all hours wanting to communicate with friends/family with an 8hr time difference.

(sorry, I know that doesn't answer your question at all! But I think you might have unrealistic expectations of boarding school in 2023)

I hear North Korea has some excellent boarding schools.

SlashBeef · 25/06/2023 20:10

After reading your OP, I simply refuse to believe you have managed to progress in any career to the point that you have the earning power to fund this lifestyle.

very straight social media policy too

GiraffeDoor · 25/06/2023 20:10

Also, from what you've said, weekly or flexi-boarding somewhere fairly local might be a good compromise?
