Hi,I am wanting to take myself and 3 kids on holiday this August.Kids are 16,14 and 10.I do have a special needs child. He is usually able to manage with all my measures put in place.
Ideally I want us to go abroad which will be our first time but don't think that it will quite work for this summer for different reasons.
I am now considering UK destinations. We did parts of dorset/bournemouth last year and looking for something different this year.I am looking at south devon as north devon is too far out for us but not sure if it's safe especially with what's been happening in the UK lately with BAME.Cornwall and north wales too far out and will be going by train.
Where would you recommend that has beach and things to do for the children?
Would take abroad recommendations as well for next year but wanting UK for this year.

What about Scarborough/Bridlington? Lots of lovely beaches and a sea life centre at Scarborough.

alexandagee · 06/08/2026 16:26

@shellyleppard Thank you for your suggestion. It's almost 6 hours away from us which will be too far to travel. We are based just over half an hour from London.

Brighton? What about Norfolk?

Willowskyblue · 06/08/2026 16:34

South Wales. I’m currently in Mumblea near Swansea and it’s lovely. Beaches are beautiful.

Dilemma999 · 06/08/2026 16:40

It’s 3 1/2 hours to Llandudno on the train from Euston. Nice beach, lots of tourists so it’s diverse.
Lake District? Around the same time on the train to Oxenholme and bus to Keswick. Loads to do for kids.
Kent or Essex coasts? Places like Southwold (quite genteel), Lowestoft, Southend (beaches, amusement park, shops and cafes) and surrounding areas. Again, all have holidaymakers.

sweatybettytoday · 06/08/2026 17:14

Brixham Devon. Seals and dolphins aplenty!

Ted27 · 06/08/2026 17:22

Isle of Wight. Very easy on trains and ferry and great bus service on the island. Buses stop at all the attractions. Lots to do. Great beaches.
I'm white but my son is black and we've never had any problems.
We've been coming here for 6 years and I am noticing more black and Asian families

alexandagee · 06/08/2026 21:05

@shellyleppard This could work although it will be a much longer bus journey .Do you know if there's a lot to keep the kids entertained in the area or is it mostly suited for adults?

Depends on when you want to go. Take the train to Edinburgh after the Festival has finished. Appreciate that depends on your child's ability to travel.

Northumberland around Bamburgh is also nice (and you don't have to wait) but dependant on your child. Once you get there you'll be fine.

alexandagee · 07/08/2026 08:29

Thank you so much for the recommendations, please keep them coming.I am checking them all out.Do you have any suggestions for nice things to do with kids in these areas?

Llandudno is great for kids if you can get a direct train there from Euston I'd definitely give it serious consideration.
There is the pier with all rides and rock shops typical British seaside.
The lovely nice wide promenade which was great in the buggy days and now mine run along.
2 lovely beach areas as there's one either side of the Orme.
The Orme which has the cable car and mountain goats.

Yello24 · 07/08/2026 08:57

When mine were teens we went every year to the Rockley Park caravan park near Poole. Lots to do and there’s a clubhouse and outdoor pool alongside outdoor sports and just hanging out in the little beach. It’s not cheap and might not be easy to find a free caravan at this late notice but mine always loved it.
Or a bit of a trek. Newquay for teens. You could get the train.

Funderthighs · 07/08/2026 08:58

There’s a website called Days Out With The Kids which is usually helpful for suggestions of things to do in different areas. I often use the Trip Advisor Forums to find out information about an area and also the tourist board websites.

Im asian and i find Brighton, Cardiff, Barry, Penarth beaches have diversity.

AplineDaisies · 07/08/2026 09:04

I think Norwich is great - good for shopping if your older dc are into it. Also it's a good base.
You can drive to the Dinosaur park
A day at the amusement park in Great Yarmouth
There's Bewilderwood.
Lots of fab beaches too.

Brighton? What about Norfolk?

I feel like as a person of colour, Norfolk is somewhere to avoid these days. Parts of it were already the armpit of the UK and recent events only seem to be reinforcing that reputation for non white people.

I could see from the map that brixham is very close to paignton and torquay and other little towns nearby. If they are easily accessible by bus or train.Do you reckon we could explore the area or is it not recommended. What areas would we need to stay away from?

Scotland! Welcoming to all nationalities and super friendly. You could try Ayr for the beach (beautiful mountain views over the sea) and it has beautiful countryside.

Likeiloveyou · 08/08/2026 08:36

Brighton!

Snackccident · 08/08/2026 08:37

For an abroad holiday I highly recommend Malta. They are very sen aware and offer lanyards, extra support and quiet rooms at main attractions.

wlinewbie26 · 08/08/2026 08:38

I think some of these suggestions are great but if you don’t have a car, they can be a little remote. Lots of things to do around these areas are quite far away from the main place / require buses so check bus availability before going.

We went to the IOW in July and it was great with kids - buses do seem to serve the island well but worth checking before hand as we drove 20-30 mins across the island every day.

good luck and enjoy!

Thank you,it's just too far away,at least 8hrs on the train and will be too much for my 10year old special needs child.
