Hi,I am wanting to take myself and 3 kids on holiday this August.Kids are 16,14 and 10.I do have a special needs child. He is usually able to manage with all my measures put in place.
Ideally I want us to go abroad which will be our first time but don't think that it will quite work for this summer for different reasons.
I am now considering UK destinations. We did parts of dorset/bournemouth last year and looking for something different this year.I am looking at south devon as north devon is too far out for us but not sure if it's safe especially with what's been happening in the UK lately with BAME.Cornwall and north wales too far out and will be going by train.
Where would you recommend that has beach and things to do for the children?
Would take abroad recommendations as well for next year but wanting UK for this year.

I could see from the map that brixham is very close to paignton and torquay and other little towns nearby. If they are easily accessible by bus or train.Do you reckon we could explore the area or is it not recommended. What areas would we need to stay away from?

I am black and have been to Torquay on holiday it was fine and absolutely picturesque. We went to a monastery, for cream teas, marina town, shopping centre etc and all fine.

also we did a big family trip to Bernard castle, about 20+ of us. Caused a bit of a stir when we all went to the chippy for dinner but not in a dangerous way. More of a a group of 20 nattering down the street sort of way.

the only place in the uk I’ve felt a bit unwelcome is Cornwall about 10 years ago and a gorgeous town where I can’t even remember the name of where two lads shouted something nasty out the car window.

I feel like as a person of colour, Norfolk is somewhere to avoid these days. Parts of it were already the armpit of the UK and recent events only seem to be reinforcing that reputation for non white people.

completely agree, East Anglia as a totality, could not possibly be described as diverse and imo, attitudes are overt.

Just as an add, trains to Scotland from London no longer take 8 hours. Its still long, but generally just over 4 hours, which might still be too long for your family. You might not want to go into London to start your journey though.

For next year, Mauritius? We went in August last year, lovely weather (stayed on the East Side as west is windier then, apparently). We are a mixed race couple and there were so many like us. The beaches have a lovely local vibe, with huge families gathering
They drive on the same side of the road and the island is small so easy to get around.
We flew Air Mauritius... never again! But the island is a great destination. We did self catering, ate out a lot bur did takeaways too

Given your location etc, I would say Isle of Wight, the bus service is excellent and you have the added excitement of the ferry. Or East Devon along to Torbay. No evidence of racism . Enjoy

When you are ready to go abroad, OP, I'd recommend Malaga and the areas on the coast round there. Although it's majority white/hispanic, there are plenty of people of colour, especially in the bigger places, Malaga City, Torremolinos, Marbella, etc. and you would be welcomed with open arms, I'm sure.

Thank you so much.Where would you recommend to be a good base to stay for exploring the torbay/ east devon area?

For east Devon exmouth or dawlish are bases with reasonable accommodation options. Visit Exeter, there’s a small theme park, I like darts farm which is basically poshish shopping and eating, boat trip, mackerel fishing… for south Devon Paignton or Torquay but I prefer brixham. North Devon is though my preference for older teens because you can surf eg croyde and it’s probably more multi cultural. I’m not black but my neighbours are in croyde now, they are Caribbean decent.

As far as transportation, look at National express, at least as far as Exeter.

another though though is Bristol which definitely fits your multicultural requirements, stay on the coast perhaps and travel into the city on the bus, lovely lido at Portishead, marine lake at clevedon and both have lively live music scenes which are very accepting of all. Nobody blinks at whatever colour skin you have here, very friendly
