Hi
Has anyone got advice on good private schools that does not discriminate against black children? Where they can make friends and not be ostracised? Anywhere in the country please, we do not mind moving :)

Also, i have looked at Oxford GDST. Anyone with experience about this school please?

Thanks in advance.

St Benedict’s Ealing - very diverse , good values

Hoppinggreen · 24/04/2025 18:37

There are quite a few Black, Mixed. Asian Dc at my kids school and it never seems to be an issue, although as we are white I might not know about it.
I have had conversations with DS about it and he says everyone gets on and I have never heard anything about Racism. There were a few black and more Asian DC in DDs year as well, 1 of her close friends was black and one Asian
We are in Yorkshire

Most of the London preps have diverse pupils.

Namechangedforthis25 · 25/04/2025 00:08

Any London school

Gateways School
Leeds

My DCs’ Home Counties with a significant north London contingent day school was considerably more diverse than our local area and schools. I would think anywhere accessible from London would be.

Royal Russell,
Christ's Hospital School

Can I ask why you think this might be a problem? Has your child been ostracised before in a private school or have you?

Our kids have been through private schools all with diverse year groups. No one is given any preferential or discriminatory treatment. Most schools have an instant disciplinary policy for any form of discrimination.

Kids are far more likely to ostracise based on personality and behaviour than race. the kids who get ostracised at our schools are the ones who are mean (girls) or the ones who are know it alls (boys). The ones with anger issues are normally unpopular too as the kids don’t like not knowing when someone is going to lash out at them. I’ve never heard of ethnicity being even considered.

The private schools are far more diverse than state schools and far more strict on behaviour so I hope that reassures you.

Bananafofana · 25/04/2025 06:23

pretty much any London private school, particularly south east London see eg : https://babingtonhouse.com
on some of the schools you can dig around on their website and find a breakdown of ethnicity data and also sometimes in the ISI reports

Private schools are NOT more diverse! You sound incredibly patronising and ill informed.

Absolutely agree on the point that private schools are ‘far more diverse’. What a ridiculous comment. There will, of course, be some private schools that are far more diverse than some state and vice versa. It depends on the area and school. Which is exactly the point of the OPs post.

Private schools are NOT more diverse! You sound incredibly patronising and ill informed.

All the local schools here are made up of people who live in the local town. About 85% to 90% of the same year group as us is White British because it’s representative of the town it’s in. The demographic is pretty similar, because of the town.

Our private school takes a far greater mix of people from around a 50m radius. About 25% of my son’s class is white British, maybe 50% of the year. Because it’s not representative of the town it’s in. The demographic is pretty varied, and, I’m sure you’ll be disappointed to know as it doesn’t fit your narrative, includes a double digit proportion of kids on bursaries and scholarships. Around one third have some sort of help with fees.

You sound incredibly angry and closed minded.

Sutton high school (GDST and part of same group as Oxford gdst)

Borrowandmiss · 25/04/2025 06:56

Many London schools are far more ethnically mixed in terms of pupil intake.
Queen Elizabeth, Barnet is a state grammar school for example ( Jeremy Corbyn’s sons went there)
From Google
’Queen Elizabeth's School in Barnet is known for its diverse student population, with a high percentage of pupils from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds. Specifically, the school's pupil population is around 92% BAME, and a significant portion, around 45%, are advanced bilingual learners. The school also has a strong academic record, regularly topping league tables for A-level and GCSE results.’

Borrowandmiss · 25/04/2025 06:58

Certainly a lot of grammar schools and independent schools around the London suburbs have higher numbers of BAME students than white pupils.

This is true of some grammars in Gloucester too.

Again from Google AI

‘Yes, it's accurate to say that many London schools have a high proportion of BAME (Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic) pupils. Data from the 2023/24 academic year shows that 37.0% of pupils in London are from minority ethnic backgrounds. This figure has been increasing in recent years.’

London schools or London private schools?

Borrowandmiss · 25/04/2025 07:08

Successive governments have helped raise the proportion of BAME students in highest achieving schools and universities. This government is aware, as governments have been aware for the last thirty years or so, that the children being left behind are poor white boys.

‘In June, a report by the Education Committee concluded that white, working class pupils are being 'left behind' after decades of neglect in the education system from the early years through to higher education.19 Aug 2021’

St Joseph’s College in Reading is very diverse and inclusive. It’s a Catholic school, if that bothers you.
