Comfortable holiday destinations for black people

Hi I feel like I'm hitting a wall.

I was considering a nice hotel in Turkey for a last minute holiday, but I really really can't take the 'lets stare at the black people' routine. Anyone willing to share their experience of holidaying in Turkey - more specifically Antalya/Belek. Where else would you recommend where you weren't stared at constantly? In Portugal we found the other hotel guests - mainly Russians and Germans -to be constantly staring. Now we have our 8 year old, I don't want him to experience this. We went to Mexico last year and loved it - our son is keen to travel the world - bless him! Thanks!

Funny I found this thread as wanted to check perspectives of Netherlands. I found myself feeling so sorry for the black people who actually have to live here.

One thing to be aware of OP is that staring itself depends on the culture. In the UK it's rude to stare, this isn't the case in every country. Knowing this of course doesn't help in making you feel more comfortable with it though.

I think thats a good point, we visit family in non tourist areas in Spain, quite traditional, they dont get visitors, Im very blond, both of us are lumpen north European and we get stared at a lot.

I've name changed for this as is quite outing but I am white and have a mixed older teenaged son and we're currently in the north of mainland Greece in a holiday resort. He is receiving noticeably sinister stares and is also being stopped in the street when he is on his own and asked for photos. Our hotel is mostly Brits and is ok but it is happening in the town itself, where I think there are a lot of Eastern European visitors. We've not experienced this before but have mostly been to France, Spain and Portugal in the past.

I'm sorry that in this day and age people are STILL doing this.
Mauritius? lovely beaches, diving, great food...
I would imagine Malaysia and Indonesia would be ok too

I used to live in Indonesia and it’s really bad for staring (and being pestered). Bali might be alright now as it gets so many visitors, but definitely not the rest of it.

Opine · 20/07/2025 00:28

@snagtoothsquarepants and yet you will get posters running to tell you it’s all in your mind. Must be something else, absolutely anything other than his race.

Sorry, I hope he manages to enjoy something of the holiday. Sending solidarity.

Costa Rica would be fun for a family. Lots to do, wildlife and beaches. I would imagine the Seychelles would be a bit boring for a 7 year old.

Sorry to butt in but we're just back from France - we've been before to Nice and this holiday to the Northern coast (more Calais/Boulogne end rather than Brittany) and to Disney. My DD is adopted and is mixed (not Black but an unusual ethnicity for Europe - we occasionally get comments and looks as a mixed family rather than specifically her ethnicity I feel).
We didn't get any of the comments on the coast (usually they are the surprised oh YOU'RE her mum/dad) but it was very white with a few mixed families. Mostly British, French, Dutch/Belgian and German tourists.
Disney was amazing as a mixed family - we felt very at home with lots of Black, Asian and mixed families. The surrounding area/shopping centres/Paris itself are all obviously very mixed but this was visitors specifically.

Anyway I'm thinking about next year's holiday of course (anyone else like me planning next year's before they've unpacked?) so looking at all of these.

I'd love to do Mexico, also Caribbean islands, but not sure the school summer holidays are ideal from our POV heat wise.

drspouse · 11/08/2025 17:16

Sorry I should add that Nice was gloriously mixed and no problems or feeling like a sore thumb.

Sparklebaby111 · 20/08/2025 12:31

Wow, can't believe this post is still going - very useful information though, I have definitely picked up lots of holiday destinations ideas! We returned from the Maldives in April, it was lovely. The friendliest people we have ever met abroad - would literally do anything to accommodate and help, I highly recommend it!

Awful. I am so sorry. We had this in Crete on holiday, to the point my dh was subjected to monkey chants. Russian tourists. I spent many happy childhoods on the greek islands and was heart broken to realise my dh being subjected to this. Just awful.

We have had many family holidays in Antalya, Turkey so my dh thought he would be ok in Istanbul on a solo trip. It was again, horrendous and he spent most of his time in the hotel. 💔

Awful! Unless you have lived it, you will never fully understand. Hence, people implying that this may just be 'cultural curiosity, admiration.....' No, we know the difference, we can feel hostility - albeit blatantly or just an undertone. I am sorry your husband went through this. Travelling as a black/brown person with other white travellers, versus travelling alone, can be a very different experience.

Our kids first holiday was to Alicante and frankly it was a lovely experience until we ventured to old town where lots of brits abroad type were. We got stared at a lot, back in the hotel we were the only black family but felt very at ease, majority of guests were Spanish, no stares, treated nicely, lovely trip otherwise. Netherlands and Antalya were good experiences although we did have some Russians and east Europeans try to take a photo with us that made us uncomfortable. I am always scrolling social media to see if a destination I’m thinking of is popular with black people before I book. Barbados was so lovely but we were the only black couple in our hotel and we did get approached by this British woman to ask if were there for our honeymoon? I found it bizarre. Can we not go on holiday just because?

If anyone likes travel and it's looking for ideas and destinations...I'd suggest joining a Facebook group called "BGMF" Black girls making friends. The UK branch.

They have a travel sub group on WhatsApp, which is very active. Lots of ideas on there.
