Comfortable holiday destinations for black people

Hi I feel like I'm hitting a wall.

I was considering a nice hotel in Turkey for a last minute holiday, but I really really can't take the 'lets stare at the black people' routine. Anyone willing to share their experience of holidaying in Turkey - more specifically Antalya/Belek. Where else would you recommend where you weren't stared at constantly? In Portugal we found the other hotel guests - mainly Russians and Germans -to be constantly staring. Now we have our 8 year old, I don't want him to experience this. We went to Mexico last year and loved it - our son is keen to travel the world - bless him! Thanks!

Has anyone been to the Philippines recently? I'm thinking of travelling solo there.

I agree. We went to Cyprus, and as the weather was horrible, we became the entertainment! Openly and quite frankly, rudely.
At one point, when the weather got better, we ventured into where they had some carnival procession with Blackface! Hell. I couldn't believe it

😧 so sorry ❤️ that's Cyprus off my list so!

@4cHairhelp I've heard good things about Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia from black people. I haven't been yet.

I found this thread via a google search of this subject as sadly as a black person it is something I had to consider. I’m looking for a short flight from the UK as taking young kids. Going by this thread, Turkey is top of my list.
Noticed that Dubai hasn’t been mentioned. I have only been once for a week last month so not enough to truly recommend it but in my experience I didn’t experience any racism, overtly or otherwise.

Rub you for good luck? I’ve never heard of that one before 😂

Hey OP, yes, I know what you mean by the onslaught of staring by specific European tourists or natives. Places that we have found with three kids include:
Sweden or especially Stockholm - very nice in the summer
the Netherlands
Belgium,
Romania
France (naturally)
Cologne, Berlin (mucky place though), and most of west Germany (but they do like to stare a lot in Germany);
western Poland (Gdańsk)

if not in Europe:
Panama - lovely
anywhere in the Caribbean (you know we love everyone there)- apart from Haiti
Honduras;
Suriname;
Guyana;
Australia - also really genuinely nice and warm people;
Kenya;
canada-

Forget Venezuela, Malaysia or New Zealand (too many problems, without bringing in their prejudice towards black people). Forget the US for now.

Sparklebaby111 · 25/03/2025 06:37

Well clearly this is a much needed topic (sadly). Thanks guys, I will be referring back to your suggestions. Yes, I genuinely enjoyed Turkey, any attention centred mainly around my son as they love children! We're off to the Maldives tomorrow- unfortunately our stop over in Abu Dhabi is in the middle of the night, so won't get to explore - but I'll update you all on my experience when I return.

Italy is breathtaking in all sorts of ways - landscape, architecture, lifestyle, food, general effervescence and fun - and you might spend a month there and never have a bad experience.

But you might also hear people whispering as you go past, confidently assuming you can’t understand even basic Italian … And unfortunately that’s what you’ll remember of your trip.

Wow......so true

That sounds great - can I ask what areas/ resorts you stayed in? What were the beaches like? We love beaches!

Sorry for my tardy reply.... Spent some time in Bangkok in standard hotels then travelled to Hua Hin and Chaam on the train which was fun. Beaches were lovely and clean during the day and in the evening. There were many different resorts and types of accommodation. Lots of beach front food stalls, restaurants and activities but very safe, very charming and everyone was just having a great nice time. Going again this year but gonna try Pattaya and Phuket. I'm hooked!!

I am fed up with Europe because of this. Although i do love Portugal. We are considering Cape Verde, at least we know the locals wont stare!

JewelsStrifeWife · 25/06/2025 01:40

Went to Cape Verde in April. As a dark skinned black woman, I was constantly stared at by the locals who are majority ‘mixed’ in Sal. Flew to Sao Vicente and had the same experience in Mindelo. Huge colourism issue; I was so disappointed. I was also stared at by white tourists (mainly French and Portuguese), who walk around like they own the place and who the locals ingratiate themselves with.

JewelsStrifeWife · 25/06/2025 02:02

After a horrible experience with Russian tourists in Egypt, I’ll plan really carefully before holidaying in Africa again. It breaks my heart to say it as a black woman.

Similar to Dubai flight time I'd suggest Ghana. Yes, you need a visa in advance so can't decide on the spur of the moment but a good place to visit.

Ngorgeous · 08/07/2025 04:07

I spent 8 weeks in Thailand, you definitely get stares being black in Thailand. And I also had comments from children in some areas. Maybe not all parts of the country but you do get stares.

Thank you for posting this. When I was in Thailand people were friendly and I had a good time, but did get lots of attention for being black, especially in the less touristy areas. That was a few years back, glad it seems to have changed maybe it’s worth visiting again, now with my 6 year old daughter (obviously just the resorts and tourist areas, she’s a little young to go off the beaten path).

unsurewhattodoaboutit · 08/07/2025 05:20

I was going to suggest Ibitha.

Pennyforyourthoughtsplease · 08/07/2025 05:25

I hope you don't mind me saying, my DH and I have travelled alot and also get stared at alot.
I'm brown and he's ambigious looking, basically could be anything.
Some cultures are just like that, and it's just because it's obvious you're a tourist but unlikley to be a negative thing. People always ask us where we are from, and sometimes want a picture with us, which is weird!
