Headscarves for toddlers?

MinnieTruck · 25/09/2023 21:12

In case this comes up on Trending or Active, this is the Black MNetters board and I’m actively looking for opinions from Black women only!

Hey all,

This is currently my 2 year olds hairstyle which I did only yesterday. I’m keen to know what headscarves you guys use on your children as mine won’t keep one on? I’ve tried a normal headscarf and a wig gap and she always pulls it off.

I haven’t tried a bonnet because I don’t want her to pull it down her face in an attempt to get it off in the middle of the night. My daughters hair will literally last roughly 3/4 days before it starts getting messy again. She hates getting her hair done anyway so that just makes my life 10x harder.

Anyone have any great suggestions? I’d even be grateful if there was some sort of head wrap out there with an animated character on it (preferably Peppa Pig😅). Thank you:)

Also how can you be offended about something that has absolutely nothing to do with you? Just trying to insert yourself for no reason. Take a day off!

Haha good one - not. I post anyone on MN and automatically people comment and assume I’m white. ‘Oh wow you don’t wash your hair everyday, ‘you have dry skin? Just use <insert product which won’t work for my skin.’ The list goes on and on and on. If it bothers you that Black MN have their own space to come together and talk about things that impact JUST US, then please get in touch with MN.

Oh and also there is a South Asian board so your joke didn’t work there. If you use your common sense it’s not difficult to understand that ethnic minorities would like to come together and discuss issues that are exclusive to them. Have a great night

@Positive41 You came to the Black Mnetters board.. and questioned why a poster wanted advice from other black women?

I mean, I wasn’t going to comment because.. well that was the posters request but my god.. the defensiveness of white people on this thread is absolutely embarrassing and shameful.

but since I am commenting now; I have no advice, I just wanted to say how beautiful her hair is.

I’ll go back to just nosing now! 😂

mishmased · 27/09/2023 00:08

@MinnieTruck your 2 year old sat down for that??? How did you manage to get her to sit pray pls tell!

mishmased · 27/09/2023 00:16

Hi everyone. We've removed quite a few posts from this thread and so perhaps it's necessary to remind people why we set this board up in the first place.

In a nutshell, it was decided that there are sensitivities and common experiences that Black MNers will find easier to talk about in a dedicated space. The board exists primarily for the use of black Mumsnetters. While other posters are welcome to use it, please be respectful - this includes respecting an OP's wish to only hear from other black women.

Please be mindful of our Talk Guidelines when posting - and as always, if you see any posts that concern you, please report them directly to MNHQ.

Thanks.

I'm of the cut off tights era too 🤣

I think that's what I did when my DD was that age but I think the silk pillow case is a good alternative. Stress free.

BombasticSideEye · 27/09/2023 14:25

So many memories of going to school with a line imprinted on my forehead where the headscarf was tied that little bit too tight!

MinnieTruck · 27/09/2023 16:27

@Paynefully thanks so much:) her hair is so lovely but difficult to manage at the same time!

@mishmased tbh I’ve been doing her hair in little bunches since she was 6/7 months old so she’s used to it now. She watches Peppa pig, has a few snacks whilst she’s strapped into a chair and she gets on with. She doesn’t like having her hair touched so we have lots of breaks

My grandma would always put tights on my head too😂 tried that with my daughter and she managed to take it off somehow. She’s a crafty one

I swear by hair masks I leave on at least 1 hour. I've uses Garnier and Tresmer. I also use Loreal hair oil.
Hair masks definitely soften hair.

The style would usually only last a day but was cute enough for church!! Some other church mums have used more products which have help to keep similar styles for days but it’s down to preference.
I recommend you give it a go. These are the ages where you can get super cute and colourful!!

IslaWinds · 28/09/2023 12:52

Sorry, had a busy few days getting my 18yr old off to Uni (including shameless crying as she’s my first baby girl)

“When you mention the word natural, I feel as if I’m misunderstanding you. In the OP, that’s all of DD’s hair, no added Expressions or anything like that. Her hair is always plaited or in cainrows because I find it easier to manage and maintain.”

By natural I mean no hair straightening and not in tight hair styles like braids or cornrows. To me natural means wash, condition and wear hair now and then to keep hair and scalp healthy, either Afro or loose hair styles like twists or using hair wraps.

This is a good description of the process of conditioning and blow drying while putting Afro hair into twists.

You could probably use the Shea butter product you use on your hair as what works for mum usually works on daughter.

How to Do Afro Hair Twists

Kinky, textured hair is very versatile and can be worn in a wide range of styles. Afro hair twists, or two-stranded twists, are a popular style among those with unprocessed, kinky hair. Twists and twistouts are great protective styles that give fragile...

I bought similar to these for my aunt and cousin. Some are cotton, some more satiny. They have a tie or velcro at the back so you can do it however DD is comfortable, and she won't be able to pull it down over her face. I buy them at local stores, not online, but they're pretty much the same thing.

@MinnieTruck thanks for replying I forgot to mention I have a 2 year old with 4c hair as well. We haven't done anything with it as she had very little hair as a baby unlike her older siblings. I keep saying we'll wait until she's a bit older. We use Mielle products as a mum on here recommended them. Amazing I'm in awe of you and your child 😂

Mine is 11 and I can’t find anything that stays on her head all night 😭

It means single plaits last about 2 weeks (just about) and I often have to redo any natural styles in the morning (puffy bun, chunky cainrows).

I have satin fabric as I sew and normally I overlock the ends and add an elastic at the back to at least cover the edges and front - like a headband.

that is probably the only method that has worked. But it fits to size.

JerkintheMerkin · 18/03/2024 19:09

This is the only I've found which stays on my daughters hair all night.

Plus it doesn't leave the dreaded forehead line. If you know you know Grin
