Headscarves for toddlers?

In case this comes up on Trending or Active, this is the Black MNetters board and I’m actively looking for opinions from Black women only!

Hey all,

This is currently my 2 year olds hairstyle which I did only yesterday. I’m keen to know what headscarves you guys use on your children as mine won’t keep one on? I’ve tried a normal headscarf and a wig gap and she always pulls it off.

I haven’t tried a bonnet because I don’t want her to pull it down her face in an attempt to get it off in the middle of the night. My daughters hair will literally last roughly 3/4 days before it starts getting messy again. She hates getting her hair done anyway so that just makes my life 10x harder.

Anyone have any great suggestions? I’d even be grateful if there was some sort of head wrap out there with an animated character on it (preferably Peppa Pig😅). Thank you:)

Can you go away?! You don’t need to tell me what I needed to write. I wanted to hear from BLACK women only. I don’t care if your neighbour best friend had a black daughter that you looked after once a week.

I’m on the BLACK MNetters board which is literally for BLACK MNetters. If I wouldn’t everyone’s opinion then I would have posted on Parenting, Chat or somewhere else.

I wouldn’t go on the South Asian board saying, ‘oh I’m black but here’s my two pence’ when the poster is specifically asking for South Asian women to respond! You don’t need to be involved in everything thank you bye

Oh my god, I am embarrassed to see the goady and aggressive comments to you @MinnieTruck. I mean seriously? You’re going to get angry over a black woman asking other black women for specific hair advice?

You just needed to write "people who have experience of black Afro hair types".

Oh please. Just let her say black. It doesn’t matter that you know a few things about afro hairstyles…

beAsensible1 · 26/09/2023 21:34

HI OP some upthread suggest tights which i remember using as kid and they do stay on.

as your LO is 2 you don't need to leave the conditioner in too long. When detangling or brushing use a little spray bottle with water before using a detangler (denman brush is very good)

if you are inclined use a little leave in moisturiser when styling, if you find her hair dries out a lot just use the spray bottle to add moisture. too much oil will make it dense and heavy after a while

Starseeking · 26/09/2023 21:44

If your DC loves JoJo and GranGran, I promise you she will love Gracie's Corner, the songs are just so catchy https://youtube.com/@graciescorner?feature=shared

The Revlon handheld I mentioned can be turned to a very very low setting; I use it when I am detangling after the wash and condition.

Also just realised it's not leave-in conditioner I use, it's the cream I have put the picture for, and I don't wash it out. I use about a 5p blob size, rub it in my hands so it turns clear, then it's enough for my DC's whole head.

I am not going to derail OP's thread by engaging with you, but I have reported your post for being racist.

PurpleRadish · 26/09/2023 21:50

Go on then @tempusernamexyz . Bye!

I only managed to get my DD to wear the bonnet posted upthread when she turned 4 so you might have a little longer to wait OP! I personally wasn’t keen on silk pillows for toddlers as I think they can be slippery to sleep on and if your kid is anything like mine it will end up underfoot and with an injury 😂

dearanon · 26/09/2023 22:02

Dd has 3B hair so can't advise on 4C hair however, she wears a satin bonnet with a little tie on it so there's no chance of it falling down her face when she's sleeping. She has really long hair so I got her extra length bonnet.

She also has a silk pillowcase and has done since she was 1. She kept a bonnet on from 3.

I got the bonnet from shein.

Ahh so a spray bottle of just water alone is okay to moisture her hair? I think that’ll defo help if I decide to put her hair in bunches to have a little break from braiding

tend to take her plaits out on Friday night and put her hair in 1/2 or 3 bunches/ combinations for church on Saturday. Then her hair goes back into canerows Sunday after wash etc. That was her routine up until about 5 years old. It’s slightly changed now as she swims twice a week but that’s another story lol.

Oh sorry I was meant to say Gracie’s Corner and not the other one😂 she doesn’t like either and only likes Peppa Pig!!

Thank you so much for everything you’ve said, this has all been soooo helpful in regards to maintaining her hair. I appreciate your help🥰

I think you’re right!😅

I’m not too worried about silk pillows but SS will literally chuck it out of the cot within 30 seconds. She doesn’t sleep in one place anyway so it wouldn’t work <sigh>

That sounds good but DD would literally not cope with that. She can’t bear having her hair touched but I could probably try and do this every two weeks

yes when its in-between washstand looking a little dry. just a light misting like a plant almost

beAsensible1 · 26/09/2023 22:30

and if she sleeps well you can do a simple hair style while she's sleeping ready for the AM

DM29 · 26/09/2023 22:33

Aww bless her. Yes give it a go every 2 weeks or so and see how you get on. The earlier you start getting her used to getting her hair done the better.
I also used to get lots of bobbles and clips to get my DD involved. She loved picking out the different colour bobbles for her hair, making the process a little more worth it from her end. It could be as simple and quick as this pic.

Oh defo not🤣 my auntie does my cousins hair whilst she’s asleep which I think is amazing! My girl defo wouldn’t allow that but thank you so much for the suggestion

Wow I love it😍 how long would that style last for your DD?

I think trying to get DD involved is helpful. She’s non verbal and we’re still working on her non verbal communication so hopefully this can encourage her to point and interact with us

This is bringing back memories, I used to. Sleep with cut up tights on by head at bedtime- I'm mid 40's.

Give a rest.
Because obviously there are experiences surrounding hair that only black women will be used to having and are best placed to give OP the advice asked for.

No one cares how long you've had black kids, husbands, step-siblings blah blah blah. You won't have first hand experience.

To answer the question, I did the silk/satin pillows and bedsheet when DC was small as due to sensory issues she could never get used to any form of headscarf or bonnet. Also used to water mist spray hair then lightly oil before bed.

Your whole comment literally proves why I’ve asked for comments from Black women and Black women only.

Do you know what 4C hair type is? You clearly don’t as mixed race children do not have 4C hair. Maybe 4A/4B at a push but even that’s rare. I’m not sure why you think you know more than me when I’m asking about specific information.

You also don’t understand the term racism and what it means so please educate yourself on that matter. And the post is allowed because shock horror I’ve posted on the Black Mumsnetters board which literally says the board is primarily for us!

Bye
