A 40yr old teaching assistant putting industrial glue in her hair to obtain the most sleek back hair possible.
The level of desperation some black women will go to inorder to achieve the ultimate baby hair. Somthing not naturally achievable with C4 hair or chemically relaxed hair either. The lack of strong hair glue/gel for specifically black hair is at play. The constant need fot hair to br a certain way. Got2b is not for black hair and the company refuses to acknowledge their black users. I am not sure what gorilla snot is, so I can't comment on that. I am scared for what will become of her scalp. The story is funny to begin with but when you think about societal pressure to look a certain way, it saddens me. I have seen too many badly glued wigs and amount of effort people put in them.

My friend sent me the link about this. I was shocked to know it was a wig! I am surprised the wig got stuck! The got2b should be put on the cap and only a little enough to last a day or 2 the whole point of a wig is so it’s easily removed.

I wonder what actually happened to the woman? Did she get the wig removed?

Starseeking · 10/02/2021 10:49

It's still ongoing, however a (Black) plastic surgeon has offered to help remove it for her for free. She also has a GoFundMe account that has raised in excess of $17k.

She'll be lucky if she has any hair left after this, never mind the state her scalp will be in.

I really dislike this obsession with slicking Afro hair down, it's not a natural position for the hair to be in, so why force it? She has gone to extremes unnecessarily here.

debbrianna · 10/02/2021 12:12

The hair glued to her scalp is her hair. However, to secure most wigs, got2b spray is used. Which she ran out of and decided to use gorrilaglue.

This current trend for edges is interesting. It feels like we're back in the mid 90s/early 00's where gel styles were popular. Hopefully it'll soon leave us again because if I go looking on youtube for style suggestions for natural hair, many styles involve dousing it all in gel.

I have a tub of Eco Style gel that I bought to try a style, but I've resisted using it because I almost feel as if it's a trap I'll not be able to pull myself out of Grin

debbrianna · 10/02/2021 12:55

I do think the gel can be a trap. There is an expectation for it, especially with relaxed or straightened hair. Gabby Douhlas and Meghan Markle got a lot hate becuase of messy untamed buns. Fact, Meghan's hair can never look like Kate's. The gel would have never done that. But the hatred on mn was vicious. I really hate the expectation put upon any sort of afro hair of all shapes and forms.

I can see how when her Got2b glue finished and she checked the house and found the gorilla glue thought it might be gorilla snot gel or the sister product to gorilla snot gel or similar. I can see someone making that mistake in a rush particularly if they didn't buy the gorilla glue and did not know it was a strong adhesive glue. That being said she really should have stopped and read the label.

The pressure to leave the house with your "edges laid" and "baby hairs slicked back" is immense. It has passed me thankfully because my 4c hair does not "listen" or tame easily to any product and hating the gelled look on myself. I think it looks great on some girls but with looser curl patterns. Even a tub of EcoGel couldn't get my hair to lie flat so thankfully this missed me. Even if I could get my hair ti style in this manner the sheer amount of product I would have to use is a turn off. I do agree that the pressure to achieve this look and where many would rather stay in than leave the house with "unruly edges " is problematic. Sis would have just styled her hair differently that day without gel or foregone the spray and embraces any frizz that came up during the day if it wasn't a huge deal and other people wouldn't make fun of her for it.

I feel terrible for her and hoping she does not get ingrow hairs under that mess as the bonding agent is water activated and seems to have got tighter with each wash. I sincerely hope the plastic surgeon can help her.

DastardlytheFriendlyMutt · 11/02/2021 11:24

She is unstuck now thanks to Dr Obeng who did the surgery for free!

www.google.com/amp/s/amp.tmz.com/2021/02/11/gorilla-glue-hair-woman-tiktok-undergoes-surgery-beverly-hills-plastic-surgeon/

I'm so relieved for her to see her scalp intact and that she still has hair! Aa much as people have ridiculed her it is a good thing she went public as she got the help she needed!

The ER was utterly useless

Waakyeandredred · 11/02/2021 11:39

Aww I'm so happy they sorted it out for her! lesson learned i'm sure.

Waakyeandredred · 11/02/2021 11:39

I love the afrobeats playing in the background! hahahhaa

Starseeking · 11/02/2021 12:07

Yes, Dr Obeng is a G for doing this! Master chemist at work 💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿

He did it all for free, and I LOVE that he has Afrobeats on in the background during the surgery.

DastardlytheFriendlyMutt · 11/02/2021 12:25

Dr Obeng is a Boss!!!!

Yes the Afro beats in the background makes this clip everything! Unapologetically Black AF! Love that it was a Black surgeon who offered and went out of his way to help!

That's really great. It looks like her scalp might survive this.

I found the other thread really annoying and lacking in understanding of black hair products. (I am not excusing what Tessica Brown did). However, there are so many products that we use that has the word glue on them. Most bonding products for weave has the word glue on the bottles.
Before got2b all we had was glue.

The other thread made my blood boil. No point explaining the intricacies of black hair there. And yes she should have read the instructions.

I'm just glad her ordeal is over, that Black don't crack and she has people confused about her age and we can hopefully move on and be more aware and READ everything!

C130 · 11/02/2021 17:04

I am pleased for her that she is through that nightmare. As other posters have said, it was so good to see that a black Doctor was able to help her in the end. I read the other thread, and yes along with some posters having no comprehension of black hair and products, I felt that some posters were really unkind, and really were going to town on this women.

Starseeking · 11/02/2021 18:00

Is the other thread in BMN, or on the Main Board? I've not seen it.

AfterSchoolWorry · 11/02/2021 18:11

I'm delighted she got sorted. Too many people were gloating and enjoying her distress.

A good ending.

debbrianna · 11/02/2021 18:21

It's in chat

Starseeking · 11/02/2021 18:37

Thanks, I've found it and read it now Smile

DastardlytheFriendlyMutt · 11/02/2021 18:39

It's almost gleeful and delighting in her stupidity. She was at her sister's house. If I had vaguely heard about gorilla snot gel, but kept using got2b and ran out, I could have possibly made the same mistake - because I would be unfamiliar with the packaging and because BW are known for repurposing products beauty and other for other uses because we struggle to find the right products. Even if from a cursory glance I had noticed adhesive I might have gone ahead knowing it was some sort of glue that had been repurposed by so many other beauty bloggers and had the firm thought of gorilla snot gel.

It was a stupid mistake not to read the label properly and not to ask if she wasn't sure, but I can see how this would happen in a rush. I can see how both names might lead to confusion particularly if you are not familiar with both products.

PlanDeRaccordement · 11/02/2021 18:41

She doesn’t need to pay a plastic surgeon a penny, all she needs is some nail polish remover that is NOT acetone free, as in HAS acetone in it. Or failing that go to a DIY shop and buy straight acetone. If her wig is plastic/fake hair, it will destroy it, but it won’t harm her skin or natural hair. Acetone dissolves all super glues including gorilla glue.

Waakyeandredred · 11/02/2021 19:16

@PlanDeRaccordement The glue was on her own real hair/scalp not a on a wig. The only fake her she had was the ponytail which I imagine was just cut off or untied, depending on how she put th pony on. The powerful glue she used was on her head. Is putting acetone on your hair for what be in her case a long period of time, even safe? I think she did the right thing by getting on social media and getting help.

DastardlytheFriendlyMutt · 11/02/2021 19:22

She sought help at the ER, and was there for 22 hours where they treated her with acetone.

Our sources say Tessica spent 22 hours in the ER and the staff was dumbfounded. We're told healthcare workers put acetone on the back of her head, but it burned her scalp and only made the glue gooey before hardening back up.

Dr Obeng did amazingly well sorting this out and making it mild enough to not burn her scalp. His help was very much needed.

debbrianna · 11/02/2021 20:12

"Dr. Michael Obeng, who performed the procedure, said all it took was a combination of medical grade adhesive remover, aloe vera, olive oil and acetone to remove it"

I saw the quoted post and my first thought was you had to be black to understand it. Especially, if you have had experience with relaxer burns. It would also make sense why no protective oil was put on her scalp while the acetone was being used in the hospital.

OP posts:
DastardlytheFriendlyMutt · 11/02/2021 20:22

Definitely. The relaxer comment is so true. You need to have that experience to be mindful of the harshness of these chemicals on the scalp. The hospital didn't bother and burnt her as they used neat acetone on her scalp.

DastardlytheFriendlyMutt · 11/02/2021 20:32

I also think Dr Obeng's efforts shouldn't be minimised as "he just put acetone" on her hair, as he achieved the tesult he did without burning her scalp and saving all her hair in 4 hours compared to the hospital who spent 22 hours burning her with neat acetone and the hair haedening after any improvement. I also strongly suspect had the hospital been a little more successful the aim would have been freeing the hair to cut it and not the result achieved by Dr Obeng. You may argue COVID and everything but when people get U$2000- $10000 bills for attending the ER, I think they are due a decent result at the very least.
