Fascinating article from Gal-dem by Ava Vidal.

Black right-wing ‘spokespeople’ do not speak for me. Comedian and social commentator Ava Vidal reflects on the rise of new media Black British right-wingers downplaying racism to aid their own careers.

'As a journalist, comedian and social commentator for the past 10 years, I’m always asked to comment on racism, but there’s been a recent change in the landscape. Before, there was at least a concerted effort to promote a variety of Black voices in the British mainstream media. We’d have our Dear Uncle Trevor (Phillips) but we’d also hear from George the Poet. There would be people like Kwasi Kwarteng being challenged by grime artists such as Marci Phoenix. You’d hear from the likes of Shaun Bailey pontificating on the evils of grime music, but you’d also hear from Akala. We would be given the points of view from a range of Black people from Lorraine Pascale to Trisha Goddard.

Nowadays, it seems that the Black people being favoured as “community spokespeople” by the mainstream media are the ones who are keen to downplay anti-Blackness, and minimise or deny the existence of racism altogether. Hardcore right-wing organisations such as Toby Young’s Free Speech Union and Turning Point UK have dedicated themselves to fighting “wokeness” by recruiting these people, just to place them front and centre and deflect accusations of racism. “Some of our best friends are Black.” Blah, blah, blah. We have seen the profiles of people such as Dominique Samuels, Esther Krakue, Calvin Robinson, and Inaya Folarin Iman rise expeditiously.

The age of these people is also interesting to me. They all seem to be fairly young and lack life experience. There’s no appreciation for the sacrifices made by their elders that enable them to live life as freely as they do. They don’t seem to understand what life was like when Teddy Boys roamed the streets looking for Black people to violently attack. They have no grasp of how frustrating it was before legislation forced a tiny crack in a few doors open, to allow a few Black people to gain management positions.

I also think, that there has been a move and some sort of bravery to bring those with extreme views in to the open as away to silence black people. As a push back, i have seen lots of black journalist and bloggers, influencers refuse to attend TV interviews because they all felt like they were being used. this has created a vacuum where you have lots of people that may have not been given chance having a say now.

it would be great if people clicked on the link to read further. I found it really fascinating and thought provoking. The link to article is below.

Why do lots of people have issues with Trevor philipps in regards to diversity?

I have noticed this OP. I think its intentional.

Don’t forget the horrible Candice Owens, she’s a black American pro-Trumper married to a British Tory. She was invited to debate at the Oxford Union, based on what I don’t know. She’s not particularly well educated and her position is essentially that black people are too focused on being “cool” and listening to rap.

Home2018 · 09/10/2020 08:38

I didn't know Candice Owen's was married to a Brit.

Not too long ago, she was running an anti Republican media outlet and one of her big topics was racism Grin

Its quite clear she's being paid to spew garbage, and on closer inspection, she looks quite unwell.

It's a shame really as she's clearly a very articulate young lady who'd have a good career ahead of her if she hadn't put herself in a position to be thrown under a bus as soon as Trump et al no longer have use for her.

I assume she really needs the money or relevancy....

Same as all of these right wing 'celeb' figures I suspect!

I genuinely dont believe Katie Hopkins, Jordan Peterson etc beleive half of the crap that comes out of their mouth. They simply know they're good controversy topics and they'll garner enough support from the thick. Hell, I'd even say Bojo and Trump are the same. It's all a communications strategy and the sad thing is that it works! So easily.

turnitonagain · 09/10/2020 10:00

I agree I think Candice is clearly in it for the money. If you’re a decent looking young black woman there is a lot of cash to be made telling older white men that they are the pinnacle of human civilisation.

Her husband is the son of a Tory peer. A match made in right wing heaven.

Home2018 · 09/10/2020 10:25

So I've just Googled them.

I'd bet my house that he'll be looking to launch a far right career off of the back of her if this election works put for them. Sad really. Especially since she is clearly the brains!

Dastardlythefriendlymutt · 09/10/2020 12:49

Fastest way to grow your career as a black person is to become a right wing shill and say the things people wish they could say but can't.

Unfortunately if the impact was just solely between you and your conscious, I honestly wouldn't care but it sets everyone back. Civil rights and hate crime become questionable and something one can debate. Respectability politics become the game while still discriminating against the so called "good black people".

I'm as career driven as the next person but you couldn't pay me enough to embark on actively setting my people and ruining my own children's futures by making it harder to do everything. It makes genuine black voices on the right impossible to listen to. It's deplorable and they almost think they are immune to any racism.

I

maggiethecat · 09/10/2020 16:32

@Home2018 - exactly what you've said upthread.

There's a special place in hell.....

I was watching BBC Newsnight last week, and this is the exact thought I had when a certain S Washington (I forget her first name) was being interviewed. Rude, belligerent, obnoxious woman. She was there to defend Trump, and the white male she was pitted against was the one talking sense.

I can't even get her out of my head. She wasn't merely offering her opinion, she felt the need to be combative. She sounded like a whole binfolk. We are all sick of the 'angry black woman' stereotype, I felt this woman was sacrificing us all for personal gain. She gained nothing from her performance, Emily Maitlis didn't even indulge her.

skippy67 · 10/10/2020 09:13

Shaun Bailey, the Tory London mayoral candidate, is our version of Candace Owens imo. Definitely bin folk.

C130 · 10/10/2020 09:17

I agree with you Skippy67.

ThinSlicePizza · 10/10/2020 09:41

Interestingly, a discussion came during lockdown and in regards to what's happening. The number of BAME being infected disproportionately. I was surprised that a union rep was pissed of that trevor Phillips was getting involved becuase apparently it's never good news. I wish had the courage to question them further.

What I find fascinating is that when trevor was working on the diversity programme, he warned labour about dangers and what could be done to avoid them. (As split within communities) labour rushed everything through and didnt listen.

I find it interesting that the same group of people(labour supporters) who have issues with trevor Phillips. This includes getting him banned from working with the labour party.

@JayDot500 ‘Stacy Washington’, Glad I’m not the only one that was cringing at that interview. It was awfully embarrassing.

maggiethecat · 10/10/2020 11:06

JayDot500 - Stacy did not like how Emily handled the interview and even suggested that she was siding with the other guest. It was painful to watch her ignore Emily's questions surrounding Trump's handling of the pandemic and instead rant about Joe Biden and the democrats taking the black vote for granted.

I find her attitude to be very similar to Christopher Metzler a black Republican strategist interviewed a couple of times on channel 4 news and it's the same belligerent, rude tone adopted. Even if their views were rational and coherent their demeanour is such a turn off.

Perhaps they feel that they are already on the back foot being black Trump supporters Hmm
@JayDot500 ‘Stacy Washington’, Glad I’m not the only one that was cringing at that interview. It was awfully embarrassing.
Yes herrrrr!!!! Miss 'My name is Stacy Washington, not Donald Trump'

'Embarrassing' is correct. I can't help but feel embarrassed when black people like her insert themselves into spaces where they're a minority and therefore end up our representatives. It's not right to feel this way, but I can't help it.

@ThinSlicePizza Chuka Umunna had great political potential, but yes, he's all over the place. David lammy. Urgh. I've met the man several times and find him insincere at times. He lifted himself up off the back of the London riots and had done better for his constituents since. But before then, he just seemed incredibly dull and lacking.

JayDot500 · 10/10/2020 11:25

@maggiethecat I've never heard of him, but he sounds like the type of person to avoid if I want to maintain a healthy BP. I love Channel 4 news, but can only catch it sparingly. I've happily avoided him it seems Grin. I welcome opposing views to my own, but attitudes like those are indeed a turn off.

Home2018 · 10/10/2020 12:55

Trevor, within political circles, is known for his self serving. I think this is highlighted by the fact he never talks to his community, but rather to the powers that be, usually in an attempt to disrupt D&I policy and never make any actual suggestions. For a 'black' representative, he does very little to actually fight for equality.

Although a career politician, I wouldn't put Chukka in the same anti-black boat as Phillips, Owen's etc. I think thats unfair.

I'm a fan of Lammy.

JayDot500 · 10/10/2020 13:07

Kemi... The conflict of interest is mountainous. A black equalities minister rejects the existence of systemic inequalities. My brain hurts. But she's out here repping a sitting conservative government so makes sense really.

Home2018 · 10/10/2020 13:07

Oh and great, we have Badencoch to add to that same trash can.

I dont get it.

For MP's that want a career lasting longer than 3 weeks, surely this 'gaslight to appease the racist powers that be' approach is short sighted. Doesn't history confirm that they'll get demoted to the recycling bin when the powerful have no use for them?

Who really wants to be wheeled in and out to spew this crap and never asked to talk on the issues that have led them to their successful careers to date. Presumably, in the case of Bedencoch, she has 'some' intelligence and is an MP on merit. Why not focus on that merit.

Priti Patel is another one. Does she really think she will go down in history well, or the Tories value her beyond being the spokeswoman for racist rhetoric, precisely because she can get away with that little bit more as a woman of colour?

What are their plans in 5/10 years? Owen's too? To eventually become a Phillips who has no real respect in the white room and zero in the black? What does Phillip's as an 'expert' race advisor actually work on. They must be so unhappy and ashamed deep down.

Home2018 · 10/10/2020 13:09

Or maybe they have no sense of self, history, sociology and their community.

Which, for such successful people, makes them extremely stupid.

ThinSlicePizza · 10/10/2020 14:31

@home2018 I added David lammy to the list because when black female labour mps were being bullied hr kept quiet. When this information came out he kept quiet. But he was happy having a go at white nationalisation Twitter. I have now unfollowed him becuase he is not consistent.

I have also noticed that he only picks issues to delve on that will make him look good. As long as it has nothing to do with black women.

Chucka had so much potential to be pm one day. That one is down the drain.

I think they do understand but they are either the cool chick equivalent as an example or those who think they will only judge others and not them because they agree with the in crowd.

Been hearing “Lord Adonis” being dropped into conversation recently by DH. Does he actually do anything apart from well being a Lord? What I mean is, is he a goodun?
