Black Cars Matter?!?

I didn't see this advert when it was live just came across this article now. I am not surprised and just sighed. The lady who commissioned it is BAME herself and says it is not offensive, but positive.

This is just why I really hate the BAME label. This woman is using her position as a minority to trivialise the message that black lives matter and simultaneously provides the excuse racists love "my friend is BAME, she's not offended when I do x, say x (usually offensive things specifically to black people).", but for something that doesn't specifically harm or target her community. Anti-blackness exists amongst other BAME themselves and is actually something I'm scared to talk about.

Am I overreacting to be put off by this advert, to be so bothered by the BAME label.

This must be a joke but it's not.

The world stays the way it is because we constantly have gatekeepers to oppression
People who are willing and unwilling happy to keep the oppression going because either they are the cool type or not one of those it affects.

EchoCardioGran · 23/09/2020 12:51

That's horrible.

Superficial and totally insensitive .

I agree ThinSlicePizza, you are spot on. Totally not affected by this and I would not be surprised that she's getting a hand full of silver somewhere for telling the rest of us we are not being cool.

I'm glad I'm posting in a part of the forum where I don't have to justify my view.

I'm think Audi were the subject of another iffy advert recently. Perhaps I saw it on FWR or the main boards?

All they want to do is be controversial to sell their cars, they don't give a toss that people have this crap to put up with day after day after day.

EchoCardioGran · 23/09/2020 12:57

Dastardly, I agree re the BAME label. It makes no political sense at all, just a handy shorthand for a majority to lump " and any one else we can think of" together.

Dastardlythefriendlymutt · 23/09/2020 13:28

Spot on Thin Slice. The system is the way it is because it benefits too many people to change. And sometimes I feel like the unspoken hierarchy that exists with black people at the bottom is actually preferred by some communities. You see it whenever something positive finally happens for black people after complaining, campaigning and raising awareness in that "black people are getting x, what about us?". Almost as if to say my community is above black people in the hierarchy, if black get x, we should get 2x so the status quo remains the same. Maybe I'm over sensitive but every single time I'm celebrating a win for black people without a doubt I always get a comment along the lines of "but what about us". Are we the struggle people? Are we the ones who have to work hard for years turning over things for us and every other minority - because at times when we are struggling and crying about something , people seem okay to just watch, until we win then everyone is now BAME or POC and we should also have included them in our right for x.

I'm sure so Echo. There is always a handful of silver for anyone willing to do that song and dance.

It's like Priti Patel using her position as a minority to call the black MPs racist and refute BLM claims.
But her word carries weight because she is also "BAME" and she is saying what we like and think.

Absolutely agree with this. The words that come out of PPs mouth would be seen as racist, were a white person to say the same.

I think people don't understand that some other minorities do not always have black people's best interests at heart (and the other way around).

However, we should all have our individual ethnic identity, instead of being lumbered with others, just because they're not white, either. It's completely bonkers. It's lazy categorisation.

Ablackrussian · 23/09/2020 17:20

Following on from this thread, it got me thinking about Candace Owen. In case you haven't heard of her (you probably have), she was once a Democrat who then turned Republican (fair enough). She is an activist and has spoken at the Whitehouse a few times.

There are so many things with her that don't sit right with me. She's got a number 2 Best selling book out at the mo, but apart of me feels that she wouldn't have the celebrity if she wasn't so disparaging and patronising about the black race. It is as if she hates us Hmm

She tore into Cardi B (again, FoS), about how illiterate she was and how her music is bringing the black race down. Yet, here she is, supporting DT and telling black people how lucky they are that they live in America and not Africa (ffs). That we are all victims and we can do what we want and only we are stopping ourselves.

Don't get me wrong, I like the positive approach she has (in some respects) but I feel that it is very unrealistic. I do think she is one of these women that has forgotten, or is embarrassed, about her roots.

I just cannot take her seriously when she is talking, and even wonder whether she truly believes the things she says. It just seems sad that she has got where she has by knocking down our race. Again, she is entitled to her opinion.

I will try and find some links but would really love some others' perspectives on her.

Dastardlythefriendlymutt · 23/09/2020 17:52

I I can't take Candace Owens seriously. There are plenty of genuine black Republicans and Conservatives.

But Candace is so obviously a shill. You dont not swing as far right as she did from being a socialist to saying some of the vile things she does. Candace saw an opportunity for a much needed shill and took it. She got as far as she has because she was willing to say things on behalf of the powers that be that most wouldn't.

Dastardlythefriendlymutt, yes, you are right. I wasn't sure whether it was just me..although my gut was telling me I defo wasn't the problem Grin

EchoCardioGran · 23/09/2020 19:16

I think shill is a good description of her. (My other description would be deleted.)
Her contacts are billionaires all of a certain kind, all eager to have a token black person on board. She's happy to be their mouthpiece because again, she's getting wealth and status out of all of this.

She makes Katie Hopkins look like a nun by comparison.

I was reading about Owens setting up Blexit (Black Exit based on the word Brexit) in 2018. It's aim being to encourage African Americans (plus Latinos and other minorities) to abandon the Democratic Party and register as Republicans.

That's just one of very many social media type initiatives she has set up for Trump. How she can do it knowing the extreme right and klan connections, is beyond me. I don't know how these people sleep at night, although more money than you can dream of usually helps I suppose.

Owens claimed Kanye West designed merchandise for Blexit which he denied. Apparently, he said "I never wanted any association with Blexit" and "I've been used to spread messages I don't believe in."
So even he drew back from her.

Ablackrussian · 23/09/2020 19:31

EchoCardioGran, she most definitely made KH look that way and look how she was hounded.

Is it not hate speech when she espouses this nonsense, or does it not count?

She loved Kanye and used to quote him whenever she could (cringe). She accused CB of letting down the black race with her music, but has she never heard of the lyrics that KW used to rap. Or doesn't that matter because he's rich, and male. The thing is, she is onto a winner: If you are black and poor, it's your victim mentality. If you are black and wealthy: you worked hard and you didn't let your blackness get in the way. Confused

Ablackrussian · 23/09/2020 19:36

..The thing is, she is onto a winner: If you are black and poor, it's your victim mentality. If you are black and wealthy: you worked hard and you didn't let your blackness get in the way...

Sorry, that last sentence was meant to be in conjunction to the historical and present economical oppression of the black race.

She's bonkers!

EchoCardioGran · 23/09/2020 19:42

Rich bonkers though!
I find it difficult to watch her, she makes me twitch Grin

EchoCardioGran · 23/09/2020 19:45

Ruth Bader Ginsberg, rest her soul, puts Owens to shame.

EchoCardioGran · 23/09/2020 19:48

( I'm aware of a shit storm thread on the main board about Uncle Ben's rice changing the racial stereotype name. Shills out in force. Thank goodness for this board and the chance to have a discussion here without the whataboutery.)

Ablackrussian · 23/09/2020 19:48

EchoCardioGran. It's amazing what peopoe will do for money. I like to think I wouldn't sell my soul, though.

Ablackrussian · 23/09/2020 19:50

I don't really frequent the main boards anymore. In fact I've been stalking this board for the last few days, as I am child-free at mo, and on leave.

I've never heard that expression shills. I like it.

EchoCardioGran · 23/09/2020 19:52

My grandfather, used to say to me that I should always be able to look at myself in the eye in the mirror each day.
I could not sleep of a night. I'm no saint, but never sold my soul to the devil. Bad karma would get me.

EchoCardioGran · 23/09/2020 19:56

I think it was Dastardly said shill. I haven't seen it used in a long time.
Reminds me of my old days when I was convinced if I went on every demonstration going I would change the world. Grin
There was always the dodgy character about giving the tactics away.

ThinSlicePizza · 23/09/2020 20:01

I think Audi were the subject of another iffy advert recently. Perhaps I saw it on FWR or the mainboards?

I think it was with the little girl leaning against the front of the car (bad enough) but she was eating a banana with a surgestive caption. gross!
I am guessing the shock-factor is working. .

EchoCardioGran · 23/09/2020 20:10

That's it! Followed by the pile on saying there was nothing wrong about it! Ho hum.
Audi just into generating publicity for Audi.
Formerly Group Auto Union in and around WW2, using concentration camp Labour.
Not a history to be proud of.

Ablackrussian · 23/09/2020 20:10

ThinSlicePizza eww, that is grim. Are they thinking that people have got their eye off the ball because of the times we are in?

EchoCardioGran have you ever seen "Get Out"? Candace reminds me of that creepy housemaid in it Grin

ThinSlicePizza · 23/09/2020 20:12

You see it whenever something positive finally happens for black people after complaining, campaigning, and raising awareness in that "black people are getting x, what about us?"

this reminds me of Gina Rodriquez and her issue with black issues and progress. She was not happy that Black Pantha the movie was made. She tried her best to shut black people up, at the same time claim her blackness for being too dark for being white Latina because her dad looks like Tom jones. Hmm (that's my take)
Funnily enough she was the highest paid acress that year. She didn't allow Yara Shahidi to say she was happy to represent black girls on screen. Gina kept on jumping in to include all girls and latinas around the world while they were doing an interview for a movie they did together.

She was ok to act with black people but at the same time she finds black people to give her the Heebeejeebees. Guesswhat? she posted a black square during black lives matter.

EchoCardioGran · 23/09/2020 20:18

Haven't seen Get Out. Ablackrussian off to search.Grin
ThinSlice, I'm going to have to up my game on the movies here.Wink
But your analysis is mine too.
So nice not to have to constantly justify it in this place.

Dastardlythefriendlymutt · 23/09/2020 20:19

You are right about being able to look yourself in the eye at the end of the day. My brother and I had a chat about Candace and he was saying, he gets it she found something that works and fast tracked her career, I mean noone else is going to look out for you. I said, I get it, but this goes way too far -you are selling out black people, your family, friends and your children, I asked him if he could do it and he agreed, that fair there are some things you say no to, this being one of them.

Candace has sold her soul and unfortunately is on the very wrong side of history. I'm not even against black Republicans and Conservatives. There are so many genuine arguments to be had, its valid to say black people should not consistently vote one way because you get taken for granted - both major parties are just as bad when it comes to black interests so none of them is owed your loyalty etc. But Candace - no, she is bordering on Alex Jones territory

Found "Get out". A horror movie. Going to look out for creepy housemaid later. Will report back tomorrow Grin
