Toddler hair

Dc has 4a/ 4b hair.

I usually braid it with added hair so it lasts a few weeks.
Recently been leaving it more natural/ twists.

I use a combination of Cantu/ Ors Olive Oil products.

However I've recently noticed that hair is being lost at the far back left side of dc's head.
It can't be due to hairstyles as it's only one side.
Potentially could be from breastfeeding during the night as dc always sleeps to the right of me. We use to alternate.

Any suggestions?

I've been looking for a silk durag but can't find any!
Can't use a silk pillowcase as dc doesn't sleep with one.

Maybe you could try a satin bonnet for children. I have seen those in the hair care shop, or on amazon. I sometimes used to take a small pair of tights and cut off the legs to use on my dc when they were younger as well, as I found that they were a little bit tighter. I always spritzed the hair everyday so it was moisturized.

C130 · 16/09/2020 11:40

Forgot to say your dc has lovely hair.

AMemeByAnyOtherName · 16/09/2020 11:43

I’ve not seen any silk durags out and about (Helpful I know) but I did just have a quick check and there are some on amazon (even more helpful! Grin)

Your DS has beautiful hair Smile

RedRumTheHorse · 16/09/2020 11:57

Paks cosmetics has an online presence and are actually cheaper than Amazon if you are buying a lot of stuff. They sell durags.

Phoenix21 · 16/09/2020 12:00

I put an empty silk pillow case over the cot mattress secured using bed sheet clip things.

Had no effect as DC sleeps in our bed Hmm but the intention was there.

Phoenix21 · 16/09/2020 12:02

I buy quite a bit from Primalbeautynatural.co.uk.

PatricksRum · 16/09/2020 12:17

Thank you for the responses.

I buy from Paks but they don't have any silk durags. :(

I will try Amazon for a silk bonnet, thank you!

Has anyone else experienced hair loss in their dc?

Only on the back of DS's head when he was on his back in the cot, since toddler stage he's too wriggly so the cot can't get him Grin. When I first read your post I read it as DS doesn't sleep if you give him a silk pillowcase, but do you mean he doesn't sleep with a pillow? Because then Phoenix's idea seems good, if you had any way of keeping a silk sheet under him while you BF.

How you get your son to stay still so you can braid his hair I'll never know. But then, we all know you're very patient!

EchoCardioGran · 16/09/2020 12:38

Do you braid with wet or dry hair Patrick?
I've found that braiding dry is better for our grandkids, braiding wet can cause it to dry a bit too tight and pull.
Although that might not be reason if it's only one side.
Might just be from a sleeping/feeding position.

Sorry it's dd rather than ds. Hopefully soon Grin

So we bedshare and because our apartment is so boiling bloody hot we never ever sleep under the covers so we always sleep on top, even in winter.
Because of this I'm not sure how I would put a silk sheet under her. She wriggles so much and takes up 9/10 of the bed

Unless I bought a silk duvet cover but I love my floral ones! Grin

Also I don't know how she stays still either.

Bribing her with banana wafers usually helps

Ah, I do braid it wet! I'm going to try braiding it dry, thank you!

I have some pure Jamaican castor oil which I try to put on her scalp but it stinks and she hates it grr

OP posts:
EchoCardioGran · 16/09/2020 12:53

It's a bit more of a faff to do it dry I realise.
Castor oil does pong, though it's really good for the scalp and hair. Tell us how she goes on.

Gross isn't it!

If I find a silk bonnet/ durag I'll leave a lot on overnight.

Thank you

I'm losing my hair. In my case, it's an old lady thing, nothing has helped at all. Might have to go bravely bald. Grin

At least that'll stop people asking to touch it! Wink

Lol. I personally love the smell of Jamaican castor oil. I sometimes use good old Extra virgin olive oil, or unrefined palm kernel oil, and sweet almond oil. The palm kernel oil has a lovely sweet scent . I buy my oils from akomaskincare.co.uk
PatricksRum · 16/09/2020 13:43

@C130

I can't stand it. Envy (not envy)

Mind you, I used to use a different one and it didn't smell too bad.

I'm definitely going to check out that website, thanks! Do you find they help with hair growth?

OP posts:
twilightcafe · 16/09/2020 14:24

DD sleeps on a silk pillowcase. Could never keep scarves on her head.

I won't shop at Paks. Id rather give my money to 'The Man' at Amazon.

C130 · 16/09/2020 14:24

The thing is our hair grows like anybody else, but in order to retain the length, a lot will depend on how the hair is cared for. For example I only use an afro pick for my hair and dc. I always detangle from the ends and work upwards towards the roots. I only use the oils I mentioned in the other post, which I mix with shea butter. I spritz my hair most days and try to drink enough water. I have shoulder length hair, but I am more concerned that it is in good condition. The best thing I did for my hair was to move away from Dixie peach, dax grease or petroleum in hair products.

C130 · 16/09/2020 14:27

I should add that I only work on damp hair to reduce breakage.

My sister avoids Paks. She said she is fed up of receiving poor service.
Dastardlythefriendlymutt · 16/09/2020 15:07

Yeah it's a no for me on Paks.
Your DD has lovely hair. (And I always have a pair of tights on hand, the bonnets seem to slip off me but I'm probably not buying the right ones).

My DS has 4c hair. It is really soft but gets quite dry. I'm struggling to find a good oil/moisturiser.

Any suggestions?

The Jamaican black castor oil seems to weigh his hair down.

He is still patchy in the back, from sleeping on his back but it's starting growing back. I have a silk pillowcase for his cot but that's redundant as he also usually sleeps with me 😂.
