Thanks for the list Guernseyfrench, I'm going to add to my list glucose tablets as I don't know how I would have got through labour last time without them. I couldn't keep anything else down and don't know how I would have lasted the 18 hours without them. Would definitely recommend them.

I'm not sure I'm going to bother with any newborn clothes, DS was 9lb 2 1/2 and I can't remember him being in newborn clothes, I'm not expecting this one to be much smaller!
In fact I remember just after he was born the midwife trying a few things on him before she found something that fitted him.

Glad I'm not the only one annoyed by Big Cook, Little Cook, I can't help but think of them as Big Cock, Little Cock, think I read that somewhere on MN. Laughing at the idea of them being classed as comedians!

Pops - our curtains were rubbish when DS was born and it didn't seem to bother him, if he was sleeping he didn't seem to care if it was dark in the room or not, and that was in the summer too so it was light early in the morning. If I were you I would wait and see how you get on, your baby might not be bothered especially in the first few months.

Stoofadoof - apparently vinegar helps on stings but I don't know how soon you have to apply it.

I really should sit on the ball a bit more, so far it is mainly used for games of toddler bowling (which he absolutely loves by the way before you think I'm cruel!) or as a handy foot rest.

Have people written their birth plans yet? After last time when pretty much nothing I wrote down went as I wanted it too I'm wondering what the point is. But at the same time I think it really helped me last time to have a good think about everything and a chat to DH about it all.

watercress · 03/01/2010 12:50

Hello everyone and happy new year!

Glad to see that others are getting themselves organised - since finishing work last week I have been like a woman on a mission! I was worried I was preparing too early (especially as DD was two weeks late) but better to have things in order than not at all. In fact, we seem to have too much of some things - clearly when people have been borrowing my baby boxes, they have been putting some of their own stuff in as well. Sixty vests anyone?!

One thing I must remember for my hospital bag is cartons of juice and the tens machine - both were very helpful last time. And blankets for the baby as my hospital don't provide them (DD had to be covered with a nasty hospital towel - oh, the shame).

I too am suffering badly with SPD, and had a hideous day yesterday. I have got a belt, which helps a bit, and I'm also using a hot water bottle every evening. And a tens machine when things get very bad. My company certainly does the "your maternity leave has started" thing if you go off on a pregnancy-related ailment at the end, so I was glad I made it as I still had annual leave to take. Have you seen a physio for your SPD? I had a few sessions, and it did help. But I know how you feel about just wanting pg to be over and the pain to go away...

ClimberChick · 03/01/2010 20:37

Hi all,

I'm also in the camp of not being able to sleep well. Went hill walking on NYs and took a nasty fall, so have very bruised thighs that i can't lie on, plus had the advantage of getting an extra anti D injection (fun), otherwise baby is all fine.

Otherwise pregnancy is progressing well, still can't believe were due next month. Still don't have the nursey sorted yet, plan to get some furniture once it hurts less to walk around (guess that also means no climbing for me this week, not sure i'll be able to return after at least 3 weeks off, will def. notice the weight gain). As for a hospital bag...... i'm sure it will magically happen. Think i'll stay happily in denial until confronted with the baby, just finding it so hard to imagine how our lives are going to change.

bethylou · 03/01/2010 21:02

Today I have made the mistake of going to Sainsburys on my own. For months I have been sending my DH on his own on the premise that it sometimes makes me feel faint half way round. Even I had begun to doubt the validity of this excuse! However, I discovered today (as DH is ill) that I really do have a very good excuse.

I looked for a smallish trolley but they were all in use so ended up with a huge one (which was useful as I obviously filled it...) As soon as I got inside the store, the Braxton Hicks kicked in and I ended up trying to steer it whilst being at an old lady angle (i.e. almost bent double over the handle). I had no hope of getting round corners without hitting any oncoming trolleys and ended up dumping said trolley at the end of each aisle and walking (with a new limp) down to get the things I needed.

At the check out, I asked for assistance and got some kind lass to steer the trolley out to the car for me - by then I could barely walk and was worried that the baby might appear in the car park! Then I had to carry all the shopping in from the car (which we have to park about 100 yards away from the house). I really hope DH is better by next week's trip!!

However, feel better for having purchased some newborn nappies and making sense of the nursery earlier in the day (nesting instinct still in full swing). I have at least seen the funny side of the shopping trip, appear not to have been spotted by anyone we know and have relieved the aches and pains that it brought on by having a warm(ish) bath.

Have a good week all. I'm back at work tomorrow for two 3 day weeks.

mamaloco · 04/01/2010 07:21

Flying there are plenty of cheap clothes in France, I usually pack up there when I go see my parents because I can't stand the pink princess thingy in the UK, or the cheap sluty under5's (OK! you can find that too in France nowadays)!
Have you try Monoprix or Z ? (especially good in the sales you can pick stuffs below 5 euros). Verbaudet is good too (catalogues or few shop around) as is la Redoute, for even cheaper there is always the supermarkets. You can also buy out of fashion "Petit Bateau" on the town markets by lot which are quite cheap as well. (i.e. 3 vests for 5 euros...)

Sorry for all those with problems, I feel quite guilty just to be tired and unconfortable . Bump seems thight all the time like I am going to explode and have BH every half hour (they don't wake me up though). Is that prelabour? Can't remember any of that last time. I heard it can last for weeks...

Bethylou I hope your husband is feeling better and will start doing the shopping soon. Mine does it as well, and he is not allowed to be ill, he did try man flu a few days ago, but I wasn't going to have that!! I let him sleep till 11h though, before kicking him to go shopping... He is fine not even a sniffle (a real man flu )

Morning ladies!

Oh this pregnancy lark is getting tough now eh?! So many of us struggling with the day-to day basics now... only a few weeks left though girls, we can do it!!

More of the same from me, pelvic pain has migrated to my groin now, so have a permamnent sensation of having been booted in the fanjo - nice - and it just takes me aaaages to do anything! On the plus side though, baby's room now has carpet and a bit of furniture so I've retrieved all of my lovingly horded stuff from my Mum's and will be getting stuck in with washing little clothes and getting the room sorted this week.

Ordered the pram online last night, so that should appear at some point this week too! Exciting! I am a bit worried about our purchase though - went for a Graco travel system in the end, mainly because of the one hand fold (anything more complicated would have ham-fisted, impatient DH breaking/flinging it); it is a weighty, chunky beast though so I'm just keeping, my fingers crossed that I can manage to haul it about and fit it in my house!!!

Right, better get myself organised - Midwife this morning, then back to work (boo!!! ). Have a good day all x

FlyingReindeer · 04/01/2010 08:39

Thanks for the tips re clothes. I don't have a Monoprix or Z closer than Paris - I am planning on going in this weekend, but dreading it with sales on. Local supermarkets either don't stock baby clothes or are quite expensive I find. I haven't tried the market, thanks for the tip. I don't really find Vertbaudet cheap though, not as cheap as Mothercare or Tesco!

Poor DH really is taking the brunt of! my pregnancy complaints. I keep telling everyone else that I am fine but at home I am a nightmare! We went out to dinner on Saturday night and I was supposed to drive home, but was too tired to. Luckily DH hadn't had enough to put him over the limit so he drove home. He worked yesterday morning while I just slept... I can't believe the fatigue that has come back.

Right must get some work done...

mawbroon · 04/01/2010 11:41

hi girls. Haven't read the whole thread, as spent a large part of yesterday in A&E.

I have broken my ankle in three places and will be in plaster for at least the next 6 weeks.

At least it will force me to rest for a while before the baby is born.

Baby seems to be fine though, not that anybody checked him. But he was kicking away quite the thing in the ambulance, so I was happy enough with that.

They sent me home in a plaster cast with paracetemol for the pain!!! I did have a great time on the gas and air when they were putting my cast on though. Wheeeeee

AbsB · 04/01/2010 11:48

Hello ladies, and happy first Monday after New Year! Back at work and lots of comments about how much bump has grown over Christmas!

I'm really starting to feel it now.. this is my last week at work and then working afternoons from home until the baby is born, but cannot stop moaning, oh the pain, the back pain, the pelvic pain, the clicking hips during the night, the punch and judy show going on in there! I actually yelled out "Can someone let me sit down" on the tube this morning as was being wedged into a sardine shape. Awful!

Yesterday, had a complete meltdown about feeling useless. DP is trying so hard to do everything and is brilliant but just felt so bloody USELESS. Went to lie down and just ended up in floods of tears, having been laughing hysterically all morning, oh those hormones... and it's only going to get worse!

Starting NCT classes this evening which am very excited about, don't really know what to expect but should be fun to see other whale like women and hopefully in for a rant!

Have a good week....

Clappedout · 04/01/2010 11:52

Happy New Year everyone!

What a lot of new year posts, I sense the excitement/foreboding is growing...

I managed to stay up til 10.30 on NYE after eating way too much, my poor DP just had a glass of champagne and tv for company....very impressed with all those who managed to stay up, especially til the small hours, good effort.

I have no major gripes to report other than feeling very tired and not sleeping that well, oh and still being at work for 2 more weeks.

Whoever asked about Phil & Teds sport double, I have just got mine from Pramworld online, it was £354 with doubles kit and raincover and free delivery and arrived within 2 days, it was the cheapest I could find and very easy to order.

Top tip on not taking warm clothes into hospital, the wards are stupid hot, and flip flops too are essential for not so clean showers. I also took a big cushion in that was great as I was strapped to a bed for what felt like days. Last time I was given a bowl and cotton wool for changing the baby and even some nappies but not sure if that's the case anymore.

Nesting kicking in big time, trying to resist uneccessary and over priced purchases but quite hard not to go mad, will start with a new gym ball as mine burst over Christmas, one mince pie too many!

AbsB · 04/01/2010 11:52

Hi Mawbroon
I just missed your post as was writing mine... you POOR THING! I can't think of anything more difficult... you put my rant to shame!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hope you get better soon! Your due date is three days after mine so I imagine you are feeling all the other pain too?
Good luck with that cast....

sunnybump · 04/01/2010 12:30

Oh Mawbroon that's just rubbish The snow is pretty to look at but so slippy, I'm presuming that's what made you fall and break your ankle? Have you got some help with your other little one?

Flying, I so know what you mean, I've been having an emotional meltdown too, I have been generally panicking about anything and everything and taking every comment anyone makes really personally. All the minor complaints are really getting me down and if I wasn't freaking out about coping with a baby I'd be looking forward to having my body back.

Gonna get a load of baby clothes in the washing machine and see if ooohing at the tinyness of them cheers me up.

Take care everyone and FluffyCoo is right, we can do this.

mawbroon · 04/01/2010 12:40

Yes, it was on the snow. I had been walking on the fresh stuff which wasn't at all slippy. Then i had to go on to the road to get over the cattle grid, and on my way back to the verge, I keeled over. I heard it snap on the way down, so knew it was broken before I hit the ground.

I have plenty help with ds, but i think I will be driven up the wall being on crutches for 6 weeks!!

The hospital was a bit of a shambles. First they were going to keep me in for surgery, then they changed their mind, they they woulnd't let me out as i would have to have daily injection of blood thinners, then they talked me through doing it myself, and decided i could go. I have to inject myself every day until i go to the fracture clinic next week to be reassessed.

I will have to keep away from daytime tv. It will drive me mental.

watercress · 04/01/2010 13:41

Mawbroon, you poor thing! You have not had the easiest pregnancy, have you? Hope it isn't hurting too much and the paracetamol (ha ha, aren't medics funny?) is doing the trick.

Hello everyone else. Sounds like we're all in the final throes or it all, what with all the nesting and wishing it were over - not long now ladies! I can't wait to hear who the first to pop will be!

FlyingReindeer · 04/01/2010 13:46

Poor Mawbroon - you really have my sympathy. It's been non-stop for you during your pregnancy with illnesses etc, so if there is a silver lining at least you will get some enforced rest.

scoobyd00 · 04/01/2010 14:00

Mawbroon - you poor thing. Make sure you keep your leg elevated when you're resting. Us pregnant women are prone to swollen ankles and it will be even worse now your leg's in a cast. If you can wiggle your toes do so lots as it will help with vascular return.

I hope all those who are feeling exhausted and have pelvic pain are getting some well deserved rest. I'm still having a symptom free pregnancy so I'm expecting a horrific labour as punnishment! I've got 4 weeks left at work with a few days leave here and there in between. I've swopped my chair for a gym ball which has confused my dog as she lies beneath my desk. More excitingly my husband starts his new job in 2 weeks so for the first time we'll be living together and not weekly commuting.

Best thing about being pregnant this time of year is being able to ignore all the diet and fitness adverts! More chocolate anyone?!

Clappedout · 04/01/2010 14:37

Mawbroon commiserations, what a nightmare, I was posting at the same time as you so again my mini moan is looking somewhat pathetic. I hope you're not in too much pain and the baby is doing ok.

GuernseyFrench · 04/01/2010 17:20

Mawbroon you poor thing!

To continue with my rant regarding my obstetrician surgery, I called the secretary this morning to get the 2 appointments. I spoke with her and she told me that she will need to get my paperwork in order to see what the obstetrician wants and that she will call me back. At 3pm, as I haven't heard anything, I called the surgery back to get told that today she was only working in the morning!

I'm soo p*d off as I haven't been able to make any appointments for work as I want to see want the scan will be.

Sorry for the rant but I'm fed up with unefficiency!

ems147 · 04/01/2010 19:11

Happy New Year everyone!!

mawbroon so sorry to hear about your ankle, i can barely cope without that added pain.

i am slightly frightened by the whole next month my baby will be here thing. but at the same time i will be soooo glad when this is over. i do not understand how pregnancy is enjoyable, the tiredness, the aches, the pains. im pretty sure every internal organ is bruised!! heamoroids an heartburn has been the latest to add to the list! yey!!

im 35w+2 but ive not had anyone go through a birth plan yet, should they have? or is this something i have to do myself? i would have no idea what to do or where to start!! no one has even talked through pain relief options yet, next app is on 21st and 1st antenatal class isnt till 14th, which makes my last class 2 days before my due date and with babies head already 1/5 engaged and bh every day, this has me slightly concerned. am i worrying uneccessarily?

woowa · 04/01/2010 20:00

I add my condolences to mawbroon hope it heals quicker than they say.

ems147 go to here for info on a birth plan, and here for a couple of examples.

I'm not writing one. DH and I know we'd like it as natural as possible, but in the end, we have no idea whatsoever what birth is like, and happy to see how it goes at the time. Then we have no plan to ruin when it all goes wrong, and no guilt afterwards that i wasn't "able" to give birth in the way I wanted (as i have heard people say they have). I'm sure it's just an overreaction to the way birth used to be - ie controlled by docs and MWs and no choice or info for women at all.

By the way, I'm naturally rebellious, so if someone tells me writing a birthplan is good, I will do the opposite. You can all call me crazy.....now.

I STUPIDLY carried a bag of coal into the house today, through the snow, then went shopping for hospital bag stuff all pm. now i am in more pain than in the entire pregnancy put together. So there is a reason we're told not to do heavy lifting. oops. On the plus side, i bought a week's worth of maternity pads and 60 breast pads! lovely, thinking about what will be oozing out of body in a few weeks' time.

I also bought material to make curtains for baby's room. hmmm - i suspect that might not happen...

woowa · 04/01/2010 20:08

oh, and ems, do you have the bounty magazine from the hospital? A5 sized, came in the white plastic envelope thing, picture of a pregnant bump on the front. In one of the weeks, maybe 30, or 31, it has all the pain relief described, which I found really helpful. You could try that to start with.
x

woowa · 04/01/2010 20:32

oh, and DH is having second (and third, fourth and fifth) thoughts about names...i can't think of any more now!!!

chinook · 04/01/2010 20:46

Just want to send my sympahies to mawbroon. What a horrid thing to happen. As if getting around wasn't tricky enough at the moment without having a plaster on.

Bit worried that my nesting instinct has yet to kick in. I remember cleaning out kitchen cupboards last time. But this time zilch!

Am actually feeling a bit more positive this week. The antibiotics have finally done their job and my chest and sinuses are almost back to normal. I only have 2 more days left at work and reading this thread I realise how lucky I am not to have any serious hip/groin/back type pain. I have also been getting my head round going through labour again. I read some advice on another thread saying don't focus on the fact it will hurt, just accept it is going to hurt then focus on distractions and breathing for the contractions. Hopef ully it will work.

I must have one moan though as I am pregnant and it is the law. I have developed very itchy skin on my arms and legs. Does anyone know what I can use to help calm it down a bit?

FluffyCoo · 04/01/2010 21:09

Hey Mawbroon - you poor thing, there's just no let-up for you is there?! Take it easy!!

ems if it's of any comfort, I'm planning a home birth, but my midwife reckons we don't need to talk it through, or fill in the forms for another 2 weeks (by which time I'll be coming up for 37 weeks!) - I'm a bit of a control freak, so his more relaxed attitude is a bit frustrating for me, but I'm learning to chill and let him do his job! Obviously we're totally consumed by the birth of our babies, but the healthcare professionals we deal with see so many I guess they don't quite have the same sense of urgency that we do! As far as writing a birth plan goes, I'm totally with Woowa, maybe make sure that your birth partner is aware of anything you are totally opposed to, but certainly my plan is to safely deliver my baby by whatever means works for me on the day - if I need pain relief I shall blimmin well have it and not beat myself up about it! Equally, if I need to transfer from home to hospital for mine or the baby's safety then so be it.

at Woowa with the curtain making, good on you! I'm obsessed with home-made things and in a hormonal moment I decided I wanted to crochet a blanket for LO... it reached the size of a place mat, then got stuffed in the bottom of the wardrobe and hasn't seen the light of day since! Put to shame by my mother who has knitted clothes and nearly finished a beautiful and MUCH more complicated blanket! D'oh!

bethylou · 04/01/2010 21:14

Poor Mawbroon. Was about to complain that DS now has DH's bug but feel that any complaint on my part is unwarranted in comparison! People have been telling me to stay inside all day so maybe I'll take them more seriously having heard about your disaster. Hope you heal well.
