Hmmm, Boff, have they checked his renal function? That could be a reason for not using the first-line agents of choice.

How is he handling the prospect of long-term medication?

BoffinMum · 25/03/2009 15:22

Bleu, if you HAVE to do dinner for 14, and want to do a Bree/Martha Stewart, shop for this:

Pre-prepared crostini from the shop with a glass of Prosecco perhaps (allow 3 bottles) or choice of juicy fat olives and breadsticks.

Followed by:

Big pasta with the best bottled sauce you can find and the bacon chopped into it along with some chopped onion and extra tomatoes as you said, and pre-grated or shaved parmesan from a packet for people to sprinkle on top.

3-4 large packets of pre-prepared designer salad leaves with bottled dressing.

Pizza express garlic bread

4-6 bottles Chianti
2-3 bottles San Pellegrino mineral water

Bunch of spring flowers on the table

For dessert: Pre-prepared chocolate cake or strawberries, served with clotted cream.

Take you all of 15 minutes to lay out.

BoffinMum · 25/03/2009 15:30

Juwes -

No renal function check
No cholesterol check
Bloods in two weeks I think
ECG at some point apparently
Hates the idea of medication even though I point out I have to take thyroxine all the time or die of the dropsy like an 18th century baronet

  1. Should I learn to take his BP manually and keep an anally retentive Boff style chart on this?
  1. Should I nag him for a private referral to some top guy asap or am I panicking unnecessarily? It was the possible hospital/ambulance bit that freaked me out big time.

Glad calcium stuff helps prevent heart attack though. But I don't see why he isn't on ace inhibitors having read the website you suggested.

BoffinMum · 25/03/2009 15:31

I am so glad you are there Juwesm. I hate the thought of my big strong DH keeling over and I want to make sure all the right stuff is being done.

brettgirl2 · 25/03/2009 15:33

Boffin - I'm sure it's really worrying but at least you know that your DH has high BP. He could have walked around with it for the next five years having no idea.

Sounds like it might be happening for Springy before too long. I'm so excited

BoffinMum · 25/03/2009 15:34

This is indeed true, BrettGirl.

SmuttyNuttyTaff · 25/03/2009 15:48

Boffin - glad you had a nice lunch (have mailed you xx)

BB - lol at your manic labour inducing oh btw no cervix dust or wands are to be used on springy now that we have a sweepstake, feel free to be liberal with them elsewhwere should you need to though

Juwesm · 25/03/2009 15:48

I think the ambulance/ hospital stuff was probably because a DBP of 120 is cut off for 'treat immediately', and he was quite close to that. All part of the medical obsession with numbers/ protocols etc. ACE inhibitors need to be use in caution in certain types of renal disease, so I wonder if maternal history of renal failure was enough to steer them away from that initially (though if hers was caused by hypertension not sure that makes sense...). Assume he is being seen again in a week? Print out the BHSoc/ NICE guidelines and ask about ACEI.

Boff chart sounds like a good idea - will get him used to having readings done (I'm sure just having that cuff on increases my BP), may give you an idea of whether his BP is worse at certain times of day. Further down the line, they might consider doing a 24-hour BP monitor anyway.

Bloods in two weeks will probably include renal function and electrolytes, cholesterol, blood sugar so they may do 'official' risk assessment once they have all those results. If you have the means for private referral then I would definitely go for it, if only because any necessary tests, ECG etc will probably get done a lot more quickly that way! But it can be quite a long process of trial and error in terms of getting drug treatment sorted. It is worth broaching the issue with DH now of possible need further down the line of several tablets daily, with optional additions of aspirin/ statins at later stage depending on all other risk factors/ medical history etc.

SmuttyNuttyTaff · 25/03/2009 16:02

BB thats ok then >

Juwesm · 25/03/2009 16:05

Is birth prohibitor just another cork?

SmuttyNuttyTaff · 25/03/2009 16:07

no, that would be rubbish you could just take it out!!

SmuttyNuttyTaff · 25/03/2009 16:08

right must go for a nap xx

Juwesm · 25/03/2009 16:09

Had head picture of you going in there with cork and hammer, possibly sealing wax, to ensure it stayed there! Though you're right, these expert cervix fiddlers would probably be able to remove even the most tightly inserted cork. Perhaps welding would have to be involved?

Juwesm · 25/03/2009 16:10

Nutty gets ready to insert BB's birth prohibitor

bronze · 25/03/2009 16:11
